First at Lough Currane as Gillie Bob Priestley celebrates !

First from the Waterville Fishery 2014. Well done Bob.
First from the Waterville Fishery 2014. Well done Bob.

Ghillie/Guide Vincent Appleby sums up early February by saying  “no Anglers active” bur the Currane bounced back yesterday with it’s first salmon of 2014.  Vincent reports:

11/02/2014: Straight to quote of the day, from Local Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com  and I quote, “no Anglers active”, and for good reason, because Lough Currane was on the wild side with a strong WNW blowing, and staying with the weather, tomorrow’s forecast is even worse with storm force 11 forecasted for the SW so batten down the hatches me harties and head for the nearest pub.

12/02/2014: Red Alert, and I can tell you  Eureka Lodge was on the tree stock market and there was an almighty crash as you can see by the photos, I and Margaret had a lucky escape, thanks to the cat who ran for it 45 seconds before the downfall, as you can imagine we weren’t far behind. Now for the fishing results, you must be joking, need I say more.

13/02/2014: A calmer day but still wild.

14/02/2014: All quiet on the SW front and no news that would get the angling enthusiasm going.

15/02/2014: Still waiting for my Noble allusive Salmon.

16/02/2014: There were a few boats out and again they all failed miserably in their duties.

17/02/2014: Again my Noble Anglers couldn’t produce the King of the Atlantic, my Noble Salmon. On the rain front, the amount of rainfall so far for February is a massive 192.2 mm, last year the total amount of rainfall for February was 77.7 mm.

First from the Waterville Fishery 2014. Well done Bob.
First from Lough Currane 2014. Well done Bob.

18/02/2014: Lough Currane has seen the biggest storms in years, but today we have something to celebrate, yes you have it, the first Salmon was caught on the troll, weighing in at 9 lbs, caught by Local Gillie Mr. Bob Priestley and just for the record my noble Salmon was lightening fresh, and it wasn’t long before Bob headed straight for the Lobster to celebrate the first Salmon and in his words and I quote, 4 weeks and one day to catch the first Salmon, all I can say is worth waiting for.

That is your ration for the week on Lough Currane, from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery, no spin no fly’s just facts.

Duff lands Delphi's first salmon of 2014

Fishery manager David McEvoy reports on the first salmon of 2014 for Delphi:
17/02/2014: The honour of landing Delphi’s first fish of 2014 fell to David Duffy of Knockrooskey, Westport. Duff as he is commonly referred to by his fishing buddies would not by his own admission be a great river fisherman. Having said that he was under the watchful eye of one of Delphi’s more esteemed anglers, Peter Joyce who was giving Duff a few tips on how to fish the river.
It proved to be a most successful outing as David hooked and landed our first. The fish weighed in at 11lbs14ozs and was taken in the Meadow pool on a Willie Gunn Waddington, using a 7wt single handed rod. The water was at 65 and it must be said that it was probably the nicest day that came since the season opened. There was actually a bit of nature in the day, which makes a huge difference this time of year, especially when the water temperatures are low. So well done to David and his mentor.

Peter and myself did joke about the fact of how long he and I are trying to land that elusive first of the season. Peter has been fishing here 50 years and myself about 40. We’ll just have to wait till next year and try again.
I must also spare a thought for the highly experienced Sutherland party of Angus, David Felton and Enrico Fantasia who tried hard over the weekend but to no avail.
We have a few very keen anglers now for the next few days but we have availability from Sunday on if any of you out there want to brush off the cobwebs and get a fly in the water again.
Hopefully I be reporting on more fresh fish in the next couple of days!!

Boats did not venture out on a wintery Lough Melvin

Lindsey Clarke reports  from LOUGH MELVIN –  Monday 10th  to Sunday 16th February 2014.

The poor and wintery weather over the week ensured that most boats stayed in harbour and did not venture out. A few hardy souls were out but there are no reports of any salmon caught. The weekend brought much better conditions but funnily enough there was little activity. Noel Johnston reported hooking a salmon that straightened his hook while running!

3 Salmon caught on the Drowes despite very high water

Our ‘Catch of the week winner’ Joe Broderick releasing his second Drowes springer in huge water at the Crooked Hole.
Our ‘Catch of the week winner’ Joe Broderick releasing his second Drowes springer in huge water at the Crooked Hole.

Lindsey Clarke reports from the RIVER DROWES – Monday  10th  to Sunday 16th February 2014.

There was no let up to the precipitation this week and the Drowes remained very high all week. At present the reading on the gauge is over 10 (1.0m)! This was not conducive to angling and conditions were very wintery at times with good snowfalls on Friday. The weekend brought two drier days however and despite very high water there were 3 salmon caught at the weekend. On Saturday, Joe Broderick caught and released a 10lb salmon that took a Rapala in the Crooked Hole and Brian McEvoy caught and released a 9lb salmon on a spinner from the Mill Pool and also lost hooked and lost another salmon later in the day. On Sunday, Marty O’Hara recorded an 11lb salmon caught on a spinner from the Mill Pool. The forecast for the coming week is for somewhat drier weather with less rainfall and the Drowes should drop but this will be a slow fall.

Nymphs Bring Early Season Success for Eamonn

Beautiful Early Season Trout

Angling guide and casting instructor Eamonn Conway reports that he got his trout season off to a start despite the recent inclement weather. He reports that there is no shortge of water and that the fishing is quite technical and difficult but there are still plenty of trout to be caught on the River Glyde where the trout season is now open.

Eamonn says that predicting the fishing was going to be difficult due to the recent snowfall and low temperatures. Fishing was slow in the morning time but as the day progressed more trout started to take the nymphs “pheasant tail” and “freshwater shrimp” patterns working well.

Eamonn advises that line control is very important to slow the flies down in the fast current. Because of the low temperatures the trout can be a bit slow to move on the nymphs. Most of the trout taken by Eamonn were small and all released safely and carefully to the water. No fly hatches were evident yet as it is very cold and early in the season.

40 fish landed in Mullaghmore including Rockling , Flounder and Coalies

Sean Carty of Carty’s Land and Sea Sports in Bundoran, Co. Donegal updates us on the fishing in the north of the country:

Its been a good week on the sea fishing front with some great reports in . Early in the week a group of four anglers fished on Mullaghmore beach and in their first 40 minutes alone they had no less than 40 fish landed between them including Rockling , Flounder and Coalies . On Thursday night two local anglers went over to fish on Fintra beach and again had great success with rockling , Coalies , Poorcod , and Flounder all being landed on Blacklug and Mackeral baits .  Conditions for the week ahead for the shore fishing look promising enough and we hope to try Rossnowlagh beach for next weeks report .

Compliments of:

Closed season about to come to an end as anglers gear up for – Leitrim Observer

Leitrim Observer - Anthony Egan caught this pike on Lough Rowan last week using a deadbait. It weighed in at 25lb and was released unharmed.

Only three weeks until the opening of the brown trout season on my local river. The need for a close season is a question that I am sometimes asked. The short answer is to give the trout a reasonable chance to reproduce.

Wild brown trout travel upstream from lakes and deep water to well oxygenated gravel beds where, when conditions are correct they lay their eggs in nests in the river gravels, known as “redds”. The female will build the nest, usually between November and January when the water is cold and is well oxygenated, as this is exactly what the eggs need to hatch….

OH MY! I seem to have landed at Downton Abbey…Tim Fanning makes new friends in majestic Connemara – Evoke.ie

Delphi is a popular destination for fly fishermen
Delphi is a popular destination for fly fishermen

It starts to rain when we leave Oughterard, a sure sign we’re entering Connemara. It’s a road I know fairly well, but in the pitch black, with sheets of water running off the windscreen, I miss the turning for Leenane at Maam Cross.

After another half an hour, during which the relative navigational skills of the genders are discussed at great length, we find the entrance to Delphi Lodge.

A hundred yards up the driveway, we first glimpse the stunning ivy-clad Georgian hunting lodge originally built by the Marquis of Sligo.

Depositing our bags and a few litres of water in the hall of the lodge, we’re welcomed by Mike. He and his party are from the North and are the only other guests staying at the lodge. Mike has been coming across the border to Delphi for over two decades and is still enchanted by the place……
