Coastline punished by high winds – Leinster Leader

As another anti-cyclone pushed in from the Atlantic, the North West Coast took another pounding over the weekend.

The Foyle estuary was awash with white horses several metres high and the notorious sand spit in the middle of the Lough from Magilligan out past Downhill and Mussenden Temple produced some dramatic scenes.

On the far shore between Limavady and Ballycastle the beaches were pounded by huge waves and the wind whipped spray high into the air, leaving it suspended like a permanent mist……

A CONSORTIUM of angling and environmental groups from all over Ireland met in the Menlo Park Hotel, Galway last Sunday to discuss a national strategy to counteract plans to expand open salmon cages along the western seaboard, according to the group Galway Bay Again Salmon Cages (Gbasc).

Delegates heard that plans are afoot in the preparation of further Environmental Impact Statements for a number of salmon farming sites in Galway, Mayo and Donegal…..

Anglers and tourist interests expressed concerns that their sectors would be hit and and that job losses would occur as salmon rivers within a 30k radius of cages would have their young salmon returning to sea infected by lice from salmon installations……

Heed warning on sprat stocks – Irish Examiner

COLIN BARNES, originally from Sussex, has been fishing in Irish waters for over 30 years.

For as long as I’ve known him — since 1987 — he has been dedicated to marine conservation, his knowledge gained not only from literature but, more importantly, from local observation.

When Mr Barnes sounds the alarm on a potential marine disaster, I take him seriously. I hope Minister of the Marine Simon Coveney does likewise. He only has to look at the man’s record and reputation to realise that his is a voice that must be listened to……

What do fish see…Choosing you lure colour for day and night

Water present’s a serious challenge for fish and fishermen when it come’s to vision and colour, many characteristic’s of light quickly change as it move’s though the water, the first thing to realize is that the color of your lure – fly in the water is almost always different from what it is in the air.  Sean Jordan of Bass fishing Wexford discusses this on his blog and how to choose a lure for the day or night.

FISHING All’s fair in angling game – The Mayo News

I care no more about the weather. It may blow, or pour incessantly from the heavens. Thunder and lightning, which recently plunged us back into the dark ages, may roll and flash. Frost might seal my boots to the floor, but I care not, for my mind is fully set on spring and the joys that it brings.
I have a favourite corner on the western shore of Mask, where every wind but one from the east is barred by a slope of hill with its alder and gorse, a sheltered, grassy glade where every scrap of sunshine warms the very air and brings new flowers while elsewhere they remain as buds. Before me the hill falls away to form a shallow bay. At the mouth of this bay regiments of trout parade up and down the drop-off to deep water.
It is here I shall be found after lunch and into dusk. At least, that is my goal. It is one of those places a man would live and never leave, and paint, perhaps, in the style of the great Romantics. I should like to paint.
B, a good friend and better angler, has gone to the Drowes in Donegal to catch a spring salmon. I imagine him up to his waist in freezing water with icicles on his nose, catching the slats that outnumber fresh fish by a hundred to one, while I toast my sandwich over a twiggy fire and pull a succession of trout to my sun-warmed seat……

Rainbows and browns add some colour to a stormy weekend

One man who can turn his hand to all types of fishing is Wexford Guide Gerard Doran of South East Angling Services, he catches some fine trout with fishing colleague Jay and reports:

With last weekends forecast looking poor due to high winds it was decided that myself and Jay would take advantage of the reasonable day that was forecast midweek. A stocked fishery was chosen that can produce some good sized hard fighting rainbow and brown trout.

Ger Doran - ReelOn arrival the conditions looked fair with high hopes to have a good days angling ahead. Fly and light lure rods were set up and before no time we were fishing. Most fisheries (rightly so) will not openly allow or advertise any form of lure fishing but if you ask fishery owners kindly explaining the use of light guage, single barbless hooks and great care taken there is often no problem. Fishing in a responsible manner with the correct equipment it places no extra stress on the fish than alternative methods.

Ger Doran - Brown troutI started fishing the fly rod with sinking line, short leader down to a olive damsel on the point. Jay geared up his Tiro 1-12gm lure rod with a 4gm Hansen lure and was the first into a small brownie after ten minutes. Some fish were showing interest but it was decided a move was in order to a different area of the lake. We caught browns and rainbows on a regular basis to about 2lbs on lure and fly breaking for lunch with perhaps thirty fish including a first fish on the fly for Jay.

During lunch tactics were discussed and I decided to pack away the fly rod to fish lures for the afternoon. The remainder of the day produced fish almost every cast to the point where we stopped fishing several times. Typically fish took on the drop or during a pause in the retrieve. Effective lures on the day were as follows:

Metals:  Ima Gun, Hansen Stripper,  Small Wedges & Mepps (all modified before use)

Soft lures: Tronix HTO shads, Ecogear minnows, Daiwa dfin shads all on 3gm jig heads.

Ger Doran - Rainbow troutQuick hooking along with barbless hooks ensured fish were landed and returned in seconds without handling the fish at all. We estimated that we caught 100+ fish for our efforts, Not bad fishing for January.

Ger Doran - Rainbow in netThere is a large number of stocked fisheries in all parts of the country that offer good angling from boat and shore so get out there and enjoy what they have to offer. If you would like to learn the skills necessary to successfully target rainbow trout or brown trout using lure or fly get in touch.  All equipment can be provided if required.

The Laune heavily flooded following rain storms

The Meeting of the Waters

Paul Hanley went down to fish the Laune last Friday. The water was too high so he went on to the meeting of the waters to see if there was anything there. There was. More water.

The Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers Association were reporting that the river was up above 4 feet on the gauge at Johnston’s the day before (Thursday, 30/01). and they predicted that it would probably rise again over weekend, but Paul is a determined angler.

And things were not so bad that he was not going to have a cast. At the Meeting of the Waters Paul fished for a short while. Perhaps unsurprisingly he had no luck, not even a pull from a hungry kelt.

The Meeting of the Waters

The Laune anglers have the following advice for anyone considering a trip to the Kingdom: With the current tides  fish will be running the system but it will be difficult to fish for one.  The Laune will need a settled period to bring it into good fishing fettle. Once the level comes down to 3 feet or so there could be a good chance of a springer.
