"Fish don't care who you are or what you've done"

“Fish don’t care who you are or what you’ve done”
“We tend to make fishing more complicated than it is. Year after year the same fishermen catch 90-percent of the fish. They do it by using their intelligence and by being alert to what is happening at the moment. They have learned the fundamentals and they make sure they put them into practice. They know how baitfish and gamefish interrelate; they are aware of the normal patterns of fish migration; they understand the physical and mechanical limitation of their tackle and learn from their experiences not from their routines”

FLY FISHING ON KNOCKADERRY CARRIGAVANTRY BALLYSCANLON

Carrigavantry – This 30 acre reservoir is hidden in the hills behind Tramore.  The lake can be fished from the dam and road and the rest of the lake shore needs waders. The deepest part is the island at 10 feet.Prolific hatches of lake olives and damsels occur. Stocking is with both browns and rainbows. You could loose your catch here to a 20lb Pike!

Knockaderry – The deepest part of the lake is 24 feet at the dam tower, the average depth is 6ft and this results in good weed growth. Trout fatten fast in this fertile water on caddis, snails and stickle backs, while lake olives, buzzers sedges and damsels bring on prolific rises. This 80 acre reservoir is a traditional top of the water drift fishery.

New members are welcome and an active programme of fly tuition is pursued to encourage beginners and get our youth out into the countryside.

Nice weather for fish, This is Kent

I HEARD a little girl asking her mum then other day: “When is it going to stop raining?” Good question.  In rural Northern Ireland, where I grew up, rain is a given. It rains quite a lot. Over in the west of the country, they get an immense amount of rainfall. The lush greenness that these downpours produce is probably why Ireland is known as the Emerald Isle. I went on a fishing holiday to County Mayo in 1985 and it rained constantly for about ten days. The spate rivers – which will rise half an inch if you spit in them – were in constant flood…

Irish Angling Update – 06/02/14

meeting
The Meeting of the Waters -the UpperLake and the Lower Lake

The stormy wet weather and very high water levels in the past week have had a huge impact on fishing both on inland waters and at sea.  Big weather systems out in the Atlantic Ocean have battered the country and most rivers and loughs are at an all time high.

Down in Mullingar, angling guide and journalist Mick Flanagan reports there was some lovely perch fishing on lures for himself and friends on Lough Ennell.  There was not many pike angling reports due to floods and high winds on many waters but 61 anglers turned out for the latest Pike Championship qualifier on the Grand Canal at Fisherstown.  There was some fine fish caught including a specimen pike of 21 lb. 8 oz for Tommy Conlon who was second on the day overall.  This lovely fish wins our Catch of the Week.  There was several other good pike recorded on the day. A 10 lb. and a 17 lb.2 oz pike were just reward for a pair of pike anglers who fished a small lough in Co. Monaghan.

Last weekend saw the start of the season on many salmon waters around the country but alas most waters were badly flooded including the Munster Blackwater, the Laune.  Very high winds kept angling activity to a minimum on Lough Currane and we still await the first fresh fish of the season to be recorded.  A yellow belly devon minnow accounted for a lovely 12.5 lb. salmon on the River Drowes which continues to produce the occasional salmon to the rod.

Just before the latest storm, a beach angler reported some excellent codling fishing off a cork beach taking some nice fish up to 5.5 lb.  There were some nice flounders taken by some lady members of the Galway SAC. In the past week when there was a nice day.

Elsewhere the Irish Specimen Fish Committee launched their 2013 report and the report is online but also now available in hard copy from IFI Swords but will be available in all IFI offices shortly.  They will be available on the Inland Fisheries Ireland show stand at the Ireland Angling Show at Cloghran on the 15th and 16th of February. In other news, the Minister for Fisheries, Fergus O’Dowd TD. has announced a new funding stream and a total of €410,000 to support fisheries development projects.  There are many other news items to read on this week’s angling update.

Tight lines especially in Ireland,

Monaghan pike to 17lb for determined anglers last weekend

pike
Danny's pike was hard won but worth the effort - 17lb 2oz

Danny Mageean and fishing partner Paul Lloyd had these two beautifully marked pike from a County Monaghan lough on Sunday 02 February. The determined duo fished in what where not very favourable conditions: high water and strong winds.

pike
Paul was the first off the Mark…

Paul had his fish around lunch time on a ledgered herring and it weighed in at exactly 10lb. Danny had to wait for a couple more hours before his bite alarm went into overdrive as the fish tore of with his ledger boom fished pollan.

After a spirited fight of around five minutes Paul slid the net under Danny’s fish.  The pike was weighed at 17lb 2oz and quickly photographed before being safely returned to fight another day.

Lough Currane not fishing as high winds keep anglers ashore

waves
A good wave on Lough Currane or is it the Atlantic battering the Waterville shores?

Ghillie/Guide Vincent Appleby reports that anglers have been beaten off the lake by the strong winds that are dominating the weather in the south west…

05/02 Again the weather brought Lough Currane to a standstill with a strong WNW blowing down the Lake, followed by heavy showers.

04/02 Come midday Lough Currane was a raging inferno and what boats did venture out, soon headed for the shoreline and the high stool. Wind SE  fresh to strong and overcast with heavy rain and a mixture of hailstones. Amount of rainfall yesterday 25.2 mm.

03/02 All quiet on the SW front. Wind Variable S light with rain and hail showers. Amount of rainfall yesterday 10.7 mm.

02/02 My Noble Anglers failed miserably in their duties, and for good reason they were resting on their laurels, watching the 6 Nations rugby with a pint of the black stuff in their hand, they would be far better off with a fly rod in their hand, and the sound of my Noble Salmon taking him or her to the backing. Wind SW fresh and overcast with rain at times.

01/02 TheWaterville Fishery was at a stand still with an orange alert, and I can tell you it was wild, so wild in fact even mad dogs and Englishmen stayed at home. Wind storm force  SW and overcast with heavy rain at times. Amount of rainfall yesterday 32.mm

That is your ration for the week on Lough Currane, from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery, no spin no fly’s just facts.
