Irish Angling Update, 30/01/14

A Squally Period at Kilgorman Today

It has been very wet, damp and windy in the past week but often quite mild with only some frost at night.  It is not very normal winter weather but the main Rivers Shannon and Erne and their loughs are very flooded making angling impossible by land but there are many anglers out boat fishing mainly for Pike in these conditions.  Despite the rain there has been a fair amount of sea angling taking place both from shore and boat.

Richard Kinnaird wins Catch of the Week for the first caught and released salmon of the season from the Upper Mill Pool last Friday

Up in Antrim, charter skipper Hamish Currie kept a group of anglers fishing inshore because of stormy conditions picking up some nice skate up to 107 lb. and some conger. Down in Kerry, there were some codling, sea frogs and an early bass recorded off the beach.  67 anglers from the UK and Ireland fished the annual Irish Winter Shore Festival along the east coast and so far big flounders dominated catches along with some round fish.  The competition was very keen and Bray angler Paul Tyndall won the individual completion and the heaviest fish for a 36 cm flounder. Out from Wicklow, Charter skipper Kit Dunne had a party of anglers out catching dogfish and some whiting.

A couple of more salmon were reported from the River Drowes where Richard Kinnaird caught and released a salmon caught on fly to win the catch and release trophy and our Catch of the Week.  Anglers struggled on Lough Currane where a fair few kelts were landed and quickly released in the stormy conditions that prevailed for most the week, but no fresh fish have been recorded so far.  The big floods on most salmon rivers which open this weekend are not very encouraging for the anglers hoping to catch a salmon on the opening day on Saturday next.

While there was plenty of pike activity over the past week there was only one competition of note which saw Lloyd Lynch take top spot in First Newgrange Active Angling Outing 2014 to a few small loughs in Monaghan that were fishable and small pike dominated catches.

In the update this week there are numerous articles on how to fish, upcoming competitions and prospects for salmon anglers facing the flood conditions on the many waters which open for angling this Saturday.

A brute of a fish gives kayak angler quite a battle

A1Fisher of Boat-Angling-Ireland.com reports on a very hectic kayak fishing session:

The forecasts were all looking poor in the end but doable for a few hours before the stronger winds were to come in so a short session was in order.
I arrived in Dunaff to meet a reasonable day not too breezy and dead low tide.
Fly rod and my new rod the sonic sk3 12lb to 20lb class. Seems a very nice rod but mine seems to have a flaw in it but I’m getting it sorted hopefully.
Out I went and did a quick search for the coalies, looking for a tight shoal but not a sign of them. So feathers down and I started to troll around to see if there were any straglers about. After a decent troll about, I got 1 1lb coalie, so I changed to the Tsunami rig to try for herring and after a little while I managed 1 herring another straggler.

BAI - A1 fisher (1)Soon followed by another 1lb coalie. A lot more trolling and no more coalies or herring to be seen.
So I went out to the 70ft of water and anchored up to see could I bag a few species to try and out of the minus figures .
I had limited gear with me so the small hooked tsunami rig went down with small pieces of the fresh caught herring. Down it went with hardly a sniff for 30 mins and as the wind and cold set in I was tempted to head for home.

But very soon after that taught went through my head I got a good take and as I lifted into it a very strong power full fish made a short run.  I was thinking of my tiny hooks and light rig so I played it gently but on its 3rd run POP out came the hook and found it straightened when I reeled in .
I thought it might be a big ray or small skate as it was the spot where Darren had his skate. I changed to the bigger stronger hokai type rig bigger baits and down again. I was hoping he would come back but I wasn’t sure he would. Hardly 2 mins later bang fish on, 3 or 4 good power full short runs and again he was off .
BAI - A1 fisher (2)Oh I was near inconsolable . Right that was it !  Into the lure box and I got the biggest strongest hook I had. which was a 3/0 O’shaugassey hook on a jig.
Half a fillet of herring down and it went attached to the hokai rig. So I sat there in vain hope of his return.
Well I sat there for about 30mins more and the breeze and cold was really starting to get to me so home was the plan and again the rod leaned over very nicely.  Again a very strong fish was there.  Well this time I let the rod go down and I struck hard as hell to set the hook. Fish on and a dam good scrap ensued.
I was delighted and terrified at the same time, terrified I would loose it. As yet I had no idea what it was. Could it be tope, spur dog, big thornie or even a small common skate
As the line came up it was heading for my anchor so I unclipped it and let my kayak drift away from the anchor line and as the trace came to the surface A shape started to appear skate, ray It was a brute of a conger. My best conger yet it was good 20lb plus and the bugger took the hokai hook and missed the bigger bait . In any way I had a decent conger beside the kayak with 3 hooks hanging from its gob. I was not keen to lift a conger in with 3 hooks hanging from his mouth.
So I held the trace and got the camera out, and with that a decent swell and a big head shake and he was off before I could get a photo ,But I was happy enough I got to see what the fish was as it would have drove me mad wondering what could have been.

Inshore grounds not a bad option during poor weather at Red Bad

skate
Frank had the best of the day at 107lb

Weather confined  Hamish Currie and crew to inshore waters last weekend but some good fish were met all the same…

Saturday gave us SW winds, force 5-6 so we decided to make use of the headlands and fish a deep trough north of Red Bay. There was no chance of getting offshore to the herring and coalfish ground so frozen bait was the order of the day.

This skate followed soon after

First up was a strap conger for William Watson. Then we had a juvenile skate for William followed by another juvenile for Brian Menary. Congers then dominated the catch until Frank from Belfast hooked and landed a skate of 107lbs.

All in all wasn’t a bad day considering the appalling weather conditions. Sunday didn’t happen as there was just far too much wind. Ah well its another fortnight before we try again.

The area is fishing very, very well and I feel that every time we get out its game on at this time of year.

Blackwater Lodge prays for a miracle as river due open on day of storms and floods

water levels
This was the river below the Lodge today January 29th. at 10.45am. The Ballyduff gauge height was 2.06m. It has fallen a further 25 cm by 20.00

Blackwater Lodge is looking forward to the opening of the salmon season on the Munster Blackwater this Saturday, February 1st, 2014. Unfortunately the forecast is not good. Ian Powell reports on the current conditions and likely levels for the weekend…

If current conditions continued, the river could be in moderately good order as it was beginning to clear on WEdnesday evening the level was starting to fall more quickly.

However, the ground has been completely saturated for weeks, so little rain is needed to bring the level up again. Unfortunately, it looks as if the weather could be against us as yet another depression is heading towards us from across the Atlantic. Met Eireann forecasts a severe storm (Status Orange Warning) with  25 to 40 mm of rain expected in Munster…

Prospects

If we do get the amount of rain which looks to be forecast, then we will probably be flooded off the river for Saturday’s Opening. At best, the river will probably only be in heavy spinning order, unless of course our request for just one small miracle is granted.

With all the high water and the mild temperatures, there is a very good chance that the spring run is coming in, so the first springer could be landed rather soon.

Raining fish bring life to ponds, Irish Examiner

I HAVE made a number of garden ponds in my life and, because I’m interested in such things, I’ve always kept a close eye on the plants and animals that colonise them. It’s remarkable how rapidly life appears in a new pond. In most cases there are logical explanations for how it gets there. Many pond insects, like water beetles and water boatmen, can fly. They don’t do it very often…

Eugene Farrelly & Martin Mc Gowan of Ullcatch in Kerry didn’t shy away from the cold on Sunday.  The boys were out fishing.  They were hopping with delight when they caught a variety of fish including some plump sea frogs, chubby codling and their first bass of 2014. With a hop and a leap they sprang to their bag, took out the camera and got some super photos !!!!
