Update on 26th Irish Winter Shore Angling Festival.

A Great Flounder Taken Today at Old Bawn

Warren Doyle reports that the 26th Irish Winter Shore Angling Festival was held on the beaches of East Wexford from the 23rd to the 25th of January 2014. Anglers from Ireland North & South, England, Scotland & Wales made the event a true International competition. The event was sponsored by TronixPro and Viking Tackle. The check-in was held at Seàn Òg’s Hotel, Kilmuckridge on Thursday morning where 67 anglers signed in & received their ‘goody bags’ of Tronix gear.

The first session was fished from Ballinoulart Beach & the 5 hour session commenced at noon. Fishing started off very well with some good flounders landed from the first cast. Flat fish dominated the day’s catch with very few round fish captured.

Best catch of the session & winner in Zone B was past winner Dave Roe with 30 fish for 790 points. Paul Whelan from Ballybrack reigned supreme in Zone D with 29 fish for 744 points. Scots raider Billy Buckley dominated in Zone C with 26 fish for 683 points. These 3 anglers also topped the superpool standings on Day 1. Supremo in Zone A was Wexford’s James Gordon with 23 fish for 596 points.

Best flat fish of the day was a 38cm flounder for Bray’s Paul Tyndall & best round fish was a 29cm whiting for Waterford’s Alan Mulcahy. A total of 846 fish were captured & returned alive.

The second session was fished from Old Bawn beach which was a new venue for the tournament. The fishing started off very slowly with very few fish landed in the first hour. Slowly the numbers started to increase with the ‘usual suspects’ finding their targets. With fish being scarce some epic battles were in progress along the beach.

Last year’s runner up Scotsman Kevin Lewis on peg 2 was locked in battle with Ballybrack man Shay O’Neill on peg 3 in Zone A. Kevin’s 13 fish won this skirmish but it was not good enough to take the zone honours which went to Ballybrack’s Karl Whelan with 14 fish for 374 points.

The battle in Zone B was between 2 Scots anglers, Billy Buckley & Jimmy Connell. Jimmy eventually prevailed with 11 fish for 318 points.

Zone C started with a fish for fish struggle between Courtown’s Joe Byrne & Bray man Paul Tyndall. As the day progressed Seàn Ivory from Dublin/Killybegs & Michèal Quinn from Bray came thundering into contention. This surge spurred Paul into a late run to win the zone with 18 fish for 482 points.

In Zone D Dave Roe was in the lead from early on. English angler Gareth Griffiths made a valiant effort to catch up but in the end Dave held out to win with 17 fish for 465 points.

At the end of the session the superpool 1,2,3 were Paul Tyndall, Dave Roe & Seàn Ivory. Best flatfish was a 36cm flounder for Micheàl Quinn & best round fish went to Wexford angler James Ryan with a codling. 651 fish were captured & returned alive.

Day 2 results saw the overall standings show Dave Roe still in pole position. Paul Tyndall moved up to second spot & Billy Buckley filled third position.

The final session was fished on Clones Strand. Windy conditions & a rough running sea with lots of weed greeted the anglers. Settling in to confront the conditions anglers started to pull fish at a slow rate. After an hour the conditions abated & the anglers found their targets.

Zone A was topped by past winner & former world champion England’s Chris Clark with 22 fish for 557 points. He was closely followed by Stephen Glynn from Artane with 20 fish for 524 points.

Ballybrack angler Peadair Taite was tops in Zone B with 19 fish for 519 points. He was closely followed by Paul Tyndall with 18 fish.

The Ballybrack onslaught continued in Zone C with Karl Whelan supreme on 23 fish for 637 points. Micheàl Quinn from Bray was a very close runner up also with 23 fish for 634 points.

Joe Byrne got his zone win in Zone D with 22 fish for 598 points.

Best flatfish of the day went to James Gordon with a 36cm flounder. Best round went to another Wexford angler Joe Carley. 889 fish were captured & returned alive.

The superpool 1,2,3 were Karl Whelan, Micheàl Quinn & Joe Byrne.

Changing the Clones venue from Friday as in previous years to Saturday this year proved to be a very good decision with all competitors recording fish. It also turned the results table on it’s head.

The final calculation showed Paul Tyndall & Karl Whelan equal on zone points total. Paul’s overall fish points total saw him declared Champion by 19 points (1471 vs 1452).

The presentation dinner was held in Seàn Òg’s Hotel where anglers & guests sat down to a superb spread.

The presentation of prize money & pools was conducted by event secretary Warren Doyle which followed a speech by EFSA Ireland Chairman George McCullough who thanked all those responsible for making the competition such a spectacular event.

George Cunningham from TronixPro accepted the invitation to present the top prizes which went as follows:

Festival Champion 2014: Paul Tyndall. €500. Waterford Crystal Vase. Cinnetic Rod.

Warmer seas ' making fish smaller' – Irish Independent

Irish Independent - Between 1970 and 2008 the length of haddock in the north part of the North Sea decreased by 29 per cent

A decline in the size of some species of fish in the North Sea could be due to a rise in water temperatures, according to research

Scientists found that the maximum length of haddock, whiting, herring, Norway pout, plaice and sole decreased by as much as 29% over a 38-year period when temperatures in the North Sea increased by between 1C (1.8F) and 2C (3.6F)….

Lough Currane at a standstill with storm force WSW to WNW winds

First Salmon caught in Kerry 2014 on the River Flesk
First Salmon caught in Kerry 2014 on the River Flesk

Ghillie/Guide Vincent Appleby reports from  Lough Currane:

23/01/14 There were a few more reported out fishing and going by the lack of sound on my mobile phone, they all failed to register the first Salmon. Wind NW fresh and overcast with heavy showers. Just for the record the Inland fisheries reminded me to let you know that, Anglers are reminded that all kelts must be carefully handled, safely returned and recorded in your logbook.

24/01/14 There was a good flood running down the Commeragh this morning and that was all the action on the Waterville Fishery, because my Noble Anglers took to the high stool and my Noble Salmon Said cheers to that, but I know what I said, but alas this is a family blog, need I say more. Wind SW fresh and overcast and raining at times.

25/01/14 Lough Currane was on the wild side for most of the day with violent gusts, and heavy showers, and if there were any anglers manipulating, you could say they were mad dogs and Englishmen. Amount of rainfall yesterday was 16.1 mm.

26/01/14 I will not be putting today’s facts for good reason. On behalf of all the Anglers and the good people of Waterville, I would like to extend our sincere
Sympathy, to our Chairman, Mr. Michael Roden, and his family
and friends, on the recent passing of  his Mother R.I.P.

27/01/14 Lough Currane has been at a standstill for the last two day’s with storm force WSW to WNW winds howling across Kerry. So we will go up to the River Flesk where Mr. Gerald O’Shea from Tralee landed 11lb fresh Salmon on a worm. All I can say is congratulations to Gerald for catching the first Salmon in Kerry in 2014 on the opening day, and may it be the first of many for the Kerry Fishery. And just for the record the facts and photo were very kindly sent to me by www.fisheriesireland.ie

Fish, craic and chunky stew makes it a Birthday to remember !

all together now...Happy Birthday to you Christy !!

The captain of the seas Mr Kit Dunne sets the scene for a great Birthday for Dubliner Christy onboard the Castle Maiden.

Ben O’ Neill and Christy had a recent Birthday Celebration and thought they’d enjoy a bit of winter fishing. Both from Dublin they mustered up a few friends and headed to Wicklow for a half day session on Wicklow Boat Charter’s new addition the Castle Maiden. Conditions had been poor all week and the lads were hoping to go out on Saturday but with forecasts for bad rain and wind they opted for a Friday half day session in a good weather window, cold but at least calm and dry.

Ben O'Neill with a great hat and a good smile !

One , two, three...
One , two, three…

We headed up the Bay to try an inshore mark with a mixture of baits, Lug, Sandeel and squid were the chosen baits so the lads set out after a few clean fish. Fish came on steady in the last of the flood tide, but picked up coming on to slack water, many whiting were taken, a couple of dogs and tiny Codling. After a little swinging in the tide, the Ebb took off and the fish came on hard. The whiting in particular fed well with treble catches and a few pan size fish among them. Given the bait selection we stuck to the small species and never really tried the big gear, another day soon hopefully.

all together now...Happy Birthday to you Christy !!

All in all it turned out to be a great few Hours fishing, a bit of craic and we were well fed with plenty of hot fluids to keep the temperature up. I’m a big fan of the saying, “Were here for Fish not Food”, but the Teas and Coffees flowed and a piping hot mug of Cajun spiced chunky vegetable stew went down well.

High water should help the kelts back to the sea as the Slaney awaits the new season

Slaney River - Mossy Browne releases fish
CPRsavesFish

Great to hear from our buddies down at the Slaney River Trust again. They give us an update and look forward to the new angling season.  Lets hope it’s as good as last year.  Remember last year’s catch of the week river with 15 Salmon caught in a couple of days !:

26/01/2014: The consistent high water in the past few weeks should help the kelts make it back to the sea. Although the official figures may not be available for a while the encouraging news is that the 2013 spawning season was one of the best in recent years with substantial numbers of fish cutting redds in both the main channel of the river and the usual spawning tributaries.

Slaney River - Mossy Browne releases fishAlthough it is yet to be confirmed it looks like the Slaney will open for fishing on 17 March. The regulations will be the same as last year single barbless hooks only to be used  for all fishing, catch and release for salmon and sea trout to have a daily bag limit of 3 fish. Fly only rule above  the old bridge in Enniscorthy.

Increase your chances of catching trout in salt water with Ger

Gerard Doran of South East Angling Services is a seasoned Wexford guide and shares his tips with us on angling for sea trout:

To me there is something special about catching Trout in Saltwater. Sea trout spend a significant amount of time in saltwater but are more commonly targeted in freshwater. Sea trout go to sea after roughly 2/3 years in freshwater returning at a later stage to spawn. Food is in much greater availability in saltwater allowing the trout to be in great condition ready for spawning. The sea trout is often overlooked with many anglers waiting for the bass to arrive in greater numbers in a few months time before dusting off the rods. The potential fishing is not to be missed by sport anglers in my opinion.

Ger Doran - Sea TroutTargeting sea trout can be approached in many ways with lure and fly the preferred option. A medium light lure rod is ideal to use with ultra light rods similar to rods suited for light rock fishing also practical in some situations. Hard lures or metals ranging from 40mm to 120mm are used according to the time of year, smaller lures early in the year moving on to bigger lures as the season progresses. Sea trout will attack a big lure no problem, I have hooked trout to 8lbs weight on lures as big as 145mm so do not be afraid to fish using a bigger lure.

Ger Doran - Sea trout flyA 7 or 8 weight fly rod casting a floating or intermediate line would be a fair choice  to combat windy coastal conditions with small sparse flies effective early season  moving on to mini flatwings or deceivers during peak season. A good option is to  fish a team of flies often a rays fly on a dropper with a slightly bigger fly on the  point.

You can also successfully target them using methods such as popped up fish baits or free lining sandeels. Bombarda floats can also be used to present flys.

To give yourself the best opportunity of catching place yourself in a location where sea trout are more concentrated such as the lower reaches of estuary’s fishing either side of low water will increase your chances of catching because the fish will drop back into holding pools with the tide. Locations to focus on for sea trout include:

Open shore (perhaps between estuary’s – moving fish)

Estuary’s or Harbours (often brackish waters).

Tidal Rips.

Sheltered bays or inlets.

Ger Doran - Sea Trout headAs with all fish it is crucial you take care when landing, unhooking and returning sea trout. Reducing the number of hooks on lures and crushing barbs on all hooks is very important. Do not play fish for long periods of time but equally do not bully fish to the bank. Carrying a landing net and the correct unhooking tools place less stress on the fish.

Guided days and Workshops for Sea Trout are available however it must be noted that some areas are not open for fishing until mid march. A state licence is required when targeting salmon or sea trout.

Seatrout regulations

  • A salmon licence is required to target sea trout in the sea
  • National bag limit for sea trout – anglers can catch 3 sea trout in a 24 hour period (where fishing is open).

Season

In some areas the season opens as early as  February 1st and fishing can take place as late as October 12th depending on location. When fishing in a river estuary then the close season for that river will apply. Similarly, when fishing coastal areas you must check what river catchment you are in as the open/close season for that river will apply.

The Wexford District is open for C and R from 17th of March until 16th of September and this therefore applies to the Wexford coastal district as well. Eg from Clammers Point to Clone strand

The Waterford District is open for C and R from 17th of March until 30th of September and this therefore applies to the Waterford coastal district as well. Eg: from Clammers Point to the point on the Western side of Whiting Bay.

Licence

A State Licence is required to fish for salmon and sea trout

  • All sea trout over 40cm kept must be tagged, and the logbook filled out accordingly.
  • sea trout under 40cm do not need to be recorded in the logbook
  • It is prohibited to keep or kill any sea trout in Connemara or the Ballinakill district.
