Pat Gallagher Cup starts 2014 off, Leitrim Observer

The Last cast – Jarlaith Gallagher Now, as an angler, I have been told countless times that I was “mad to go out fishing in that weather” and it only roaring a force three, which the Met Office describe as a “moderate breeze” with rain that would bore holes in the back of a tortoise, but I draw the line at that. When it comes to safety on the water you can never take chances. Surfing weather is certainly not very conducive to angling! January 1, arrived finally and I imagine as some super surfer was preparing to catch a wave just miles from the river Drowse, I was putting my rod back…

A slippy start but the day ended well for the crew on the Iona

10lb huss for Dave
10lb huss for Dave

Peter Ross, Mark and Davy set sail on the Iona to the Maidens . Peter reports on Boat Angling Ireland blog:

While having a pint with Mark on Saturday I noticed the forecast had improved and I suggested heading out fishing on Sunday. No better way for Mark to get rid of his cold than sweat it out while fighting a big skate Mark wanted to take his boat Iona to give it a good run as it hadn’t been out for a while.
Things didn’t begin too well, at the bottom of the slip Mark announced he had locked his keys in the cabin.  We had to remove the window of the door to get in. Boat into the water, Mark went to start the engine before reversing off the trailer; not enough power to start the engine I got a spare one of my boat and we were underway, straight out to the hole. While getting the dubby ready I managed to spill the fish oil all over the floor it was like a skating rink. What else could go wrong. Well the anchor dragged for about the first hour then Mark thought he had a decent fish but it turned out to be everyone’s trace in an almighty tangle and 12lbs of lead We then started to get a few bites and Davy was soon into the usual doggies. Near slack tide Mark was into a decent fish and it was skate on , happy days his first for 14 months It fought well and after 45 mins it was brought aboard for measuring and tagging. It turned out as a nice male at 114lbs.

Mark, skate on..

Davy got a decent huss at 10lbs and I finished up with a nice spurdog at 14lbs.

It ended up a great day out after a dodgy start and after we retrieved the boat we retired to the boat club for a few refreshments.

Big conditions, big lure, big fish as Steven catches the pollack in Donegal

Rookie Bass Angler Steven Neely catches the beauty of the Donegal coast and wins his battle with the elements to catch some fine conditioned pollack. He reports:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAFinally we get a calm spell in the weather. The sun is out, the sky is blue and that horrid wind has dropped. All sounds perfect ….. I have two words for you – Ground Swell!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWe set off on Saturday morning with high hopes until we reached our vantage point and could see the waves crashing over the rocks. Whilst very impressive it was hardly very conducive for fishing!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI decided to unleash the big guns and out came the Fiiish 140 Black Minnow. This lure really is a lump but it looks savage. Big conditions, big lure, big fish?

I whacked the lure out into the maelstrom in front of me. As the lure was falling through the water I felt one hard, positive knock on the rod. I tightened the line and lifted into it. Fish on!

It wasn’t a massive fish but it was a welcome sight. The first salt water fish of 2014 and it was in great condition.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAIt was great to have our efforts rewarded. It was rough and a little challenging but we weren’t giving up. This was our only opportunity to get out and by hook or by crook we were determined to catch a few pollack.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe larger lure profile certainly helped in the rougher water. I felt that the bigger lure held up in the stronger currents and presented a much clearer target for the fish.

Steven Neely - Donegal (1)As we got pushed off one set of rocks we moved onto another in search of more feeding fish.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA6 inch bubblegum pink Lunker City Sluggo worked a treat in the oxygenated waters.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAnother small but hard fighting pollack to round off the trip.

The sea may still have been mental but we managed a few fish and that was all it took to lift the spirits. I have been sitting in the house watching all these storms blow through, itching to get out and wet a line in salt water.

Finally, our chance arrived and it paid off – the season has begun!

Although for some even the plane is not quick enough to get here, they are launching their lure’s within hour’s of arriving, and who can blame them !!       ( September 2013 )

Another springer from the Drowes as levels stay below 0.8m

Colin Gardner with his springer

Another springer was caught on the Drowes yesterday. Shane Gallagher reports on how the river has been fishing…

Yesterday, Monday 20 January, was dry and bright. There was some rain and sleet on Sunday night but the water level stayed below 0.8 metres on the gauge. Colin Gardiner had a 10lbs fish from the Boathouse on black Flying C with silver blade in the afternoon.

The weekend was very quiet with very few fish seen though there were reports of one lost on fly from the Nursery Pool, below the Eel Weir. Conditions over the weekend were good and there were some very accomplished anglers out but despite expectations no fish were forthcoming.

Knock The Priest On The Head Bring A Camera Instead

In an effort to encourage an increased level of catch and release, especially for spring fish we are offering a prize of the latest GoPro Hero Action Camera for the first spring fish to be caught and released at the fishery in 2014. The fish must be a fresh, wild spring salmon and the release must be recorded by photo/video, verified and witnessed. (Terms & conditions apply).

There will also be a prize for the first fish caught on fly in the 2014 season. Fly tyer Denis O’Toole has kindly sponsored a selection of flies ideal for spring fishing such as the Frances, Snaelda, Ally’s Shrimp, Willie Gunn and the perennial favourite, the Green Butt Cascade. The flies are presented in a wooden inlaid fly box, hand made in Switzerland by Peter Zahnd.

Prospects

The forecast is for further showers over the coming week but amounts should not be enough to rise water levels significantly

Warning over proposed salmon-farm in the aftermath of storm damage on Galway Bay, Irish Times

GALWAY Bay Against Salmon Cages (Gbasc) pose an intriguing scenario following the recent storms as tsunami-like waves reached heights of 12m in Galway Bay causing severe damage to businesses, homes and amenities. The group say that if the proposed giant salmon farm was in place during the storms, it would have been completely destroyed. This, in turn, would have resulted in an environmental disaster with millions of farmed salmon…
