No springers yet on Currane

flat calm
The lake was like a mill pond on Monday

Ghillie/Guide Vincent Appleby reports that anglers are still trying for the first springer of the year at the Lough Curran. Anglers are reminded that all kelts must be carefully handled, safely retuned and recorded in your logbook.

20/01 Lough Currane was like a milk pond for most of the day, but this didn’t deter a few boats manipulating, but alas they all failed miserably in their duties in procuring my Noble Wild fresh Atlantic Salmon.

flat calm
The lake was like a mill pond on Monday

The same couldn’t be said in the Kelt department, there were at least four caught and just for the record Mr. Michael O’Sullivan of Waterville boats and of [email protected] reported to me there have been at least 30 Kelts caught since the opening day and this was concurred by Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com.

21/01 Again my noble Anglers failed miserably in catching and reporting their catches, be it fresh or spent. Wind WNW fresh with the showers.

22/01 There were just 2 boats manipulating and both failed miserably in their duties without any fear of contradiction, so the least said the soonest mended and their quotes I can’t repeat.

That is your ration for the week on Lough Currane, from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery, no spin no fly’s just facts.

Irish Winter Beach Festival take place on Wexford beaches

Shay O’Neill with a double of dabs

Stephen Brennan ofIrishSportFishing.com tells us of Wexford’s winter beach festival which takes place tomorrow:

This Thursday sees the first day of the Irish Winter Beach Festival take place on Wexford beaches. While the number of anglers taking part is down compared to the old days when the match fishing scene was much bigger, this remains one of the more prestigious competitions in this country. This prestige is achieved due to the fact that it attracts many excellent anglers from around the country and overseas. The field is a highly competitive one and if things go right for you on the day (along with a bit of luck!) I think the winner could be any one of thirty anglers.

Alan Mulcahy casting out at Kilgorman

The beaches should produce fish. There are southerlies forecast for Tuesday, so this should stir things up and put a bit of colour in the water. The flounders will be in close, the dabs and whiting slightly further out, and if it does happen to be scratchy distance could come into it. Figuring out what to target, at what range, and at what stage of tide will be the key!

Baiting up

Ballinoulart/Morriscastle should have plenty of dabs with some flounders and whiting. Old Bawn and Kilgorman might see a few more flounders caught, but each end of each beach could fish differently to the other. For example Kilgorman fished well last week, but some catches were dominated by dabs and others by flounders.

Should be an interesting match anyway with plenty of good battles! Best of luck to everyone fishing!

Great activity and fun at the 2014 Interprovincial Shore Competition, Waterfoot

Cold winds, numb hands and freezing rain didn’t deter the eager anglers at the 2014 Interprovincial Shore Competition, Waterfoot.  Brian Reidy gives us an excellent report of how the days unfolded:

January 11th and 12th:

Well done to all the anglers competing for a place on the Irish Mens and Ladies Home Nations Teams for 2014 and the Interprovincial title, in what were testing conditions last weekend at various venues in north Ulster.

It was a serious effort over the weekend, with freezing temperatures, biting winds and of course rain with the fish not playing ball at times.

The ladies were on Waterfoot beach for the day and night session on the 11th, it was clear skies but freezing during the day with a light breeze. The two Connacht ladies Fiona McDonagh and Eithne Hartley got off to the ideal start both winning their zones on the morning session – each having well over 10 fish each. Lisa Gormley and Paula Johnston both of Ulster were 2nd in both zones.

The numb hands had to be used again for the night session, which was hectic with fish nearly every cast. This time it was the Leinster ladies coming to the fore, with Pat Shortt and Jane Cantwell winning the zones, both ladies having over 40 fish each. Lisa Gormley and Debbie Withers of Ulster were 2nd in both zones. Flounders dominated both sessions with coalfish, codling, rockling and whiting making up the rest of the catches.

Then Sunday on Benone was the opposite with fish few and far between and a stiff breeze raising the sand and making fishing difficult, then the rain came at the end. It was clear after an hour with so few fish caught this was going to come down to a single fish to make the home nations team. At one point 3 ladies in zone B had their lines cross and on the retrieve a fish was in amongst all 3 traces – but if fell off the hook. If any of the 3 could have claimed that fish they would have made the team so tight were the scores.

Lisa Gormley of Ulster was consistency personified and claimed her zone with 2 fish, one a fine flounder of 36cm.  With that she won the championship overall and took her place as captain of the Irish Ladies Home Nations Team. Mary Hyland of Connacht was 2nd in the zone with 1 fish. In the other zone Anne Whitty of Leinster won it with a fine flounder of 36cm. Linda Manton of Munster claimed 2nd with an 8cm flounder! For the remaining places on the Home Nations team it was very tight 2nd 3rd and 4th was tied and was only resolved on fish count back leaving Anne Whitty 2nd, Paula Johnston 3rd and Mary Hyland 4th . Linda Mantons tiny fish with only minutes to go in the competition earned her 5th and a place on the Irish team. Fiona McDonagh of Connacht was 6th and takes the reserve position.

The Ulster ladies took the Interprovincial Championship having a score a third more than Leinster who just pipped Connacht by two points, with Munster well back in 4th. The local knowledge came out in the end. Lisa Gormley, Paula Johnston, Debbie Withers, Janet Snoddy and Margaret Trusdale made up the Ulster team.

The men began with a very tough session on Portstewart beach. Fish were hard to come by and Joe Carley of Leinster took his zone with 3 fish. Paul Whelan of Leinster was 2nd with 3 fish. Aidan O’Halloran of Munster was third with 1 fish. In the other zone Leinster continued to dominate with Paddy Barnwell 1st with 3 fish and Raymond Gibson, Ulster bucked the trend finishing 2nd with 2 fish and Ronan McGonagle, Ulster was 3rd with 2 fish.

For session 2 the men moved to the Whiterocks in Portrush. Here the fish were more plentiful with Martin Howlin of Leinster winning his zone with 19 fish and JP Molloy of Munster 2nd with 13 fish. Paul Whelan, Leinster was 3rd with 11 fish. In the other zone Chris O’ Sullivan won with 11 fish and Peter Atkins of Connacht was 2nd with 11 fish. Joe Carley took 9 fish for a zone third. The species were flounder, turbot, rockling, whiting, coalfish and sea trout.

IFSA - 2014 Intreprovincial Shore, Waterfoot (2)For the final session the men joined up with the ladies on Benone, the fish were hard to come by but this part of the beach threw up more than the ladies end. Noel Fogarty, Leinster took the zone with 4 fish including a fine bass of 3.5lb. Joe Carley, Leinster was 2nd with 4 fish and Martin Howlin was 3rd with 4 fish ensuring a clean sweep for Leinster. In the other zone Paul Whelan assured Leinsters dominance with the zone win and 4 fish. Brian Wallace of Ulster was 2nd with 4 fish and Eugene Andrews of Ulster was 3rd with 3 fish. Apart from the bass most fish were flounder with some small turbot included.

It is no surprise that Leinster took the 4 remaining places on the Irish Home Nations Team with Aidan O’Halloran taking the reserve place for Munster. They will now join team Captain Mike Curtin, Connacht (winner of the All Ireland Open – The Jimmy Smith) in Scotland.

Leinster won the Interprovincial Championship by having almost a third more points than Munster with Ulster only 2 points behind in 3rd. Connacht were 4th with another 5 points less. Paddy Barnwell was the 5th member of the Leinster team.

Both the Irish home nations teams will travel to the event which is due to take place at the end of June/start of July 2014 over in Scotland pitting themselves against the home team along with England and Wales.

Huge thanks must go to the Ulster provincial council for organising this event both the headquarters at the Port Hotel and the venues used and all the helpful correspondence. The stewards on the day were a credit to their clubs.  The Irish Federation of Sea Anglers shore committee was also a great help for organising the draw and the completing the scores in good time. Well done to all on a great even.

Pat Gallagher Cup starts 2014 off – Leitrim Observer

2013 was literally blown into 2014, with gales and storms battering the country.

The Last cast – Jarlaith Gallagher

Now, as an angler, I have been told countless times that I was “mad to go out fishing in that weather” and it only roaring a force three, which the Met Office describe as a “moderate breeze” with rain that would bore holes in the back of a tortoise, but I draw the line at that. When it comes to safety on the water you can never take chances. Surfing weather is certainly not very conducive to angling! January 1, arrived finally and I imagine as some super surfer was preparing to catch a wave just miles from the river Drowse, I was putting my rod back on its rack. My opening day trip to this beautiful river to try to land the first salmon of the New Year will have to wait another 12 months. This year, that honour goes to Ballyshannon angler, Eoin Mc Manus. The first salmon weighed in at 8lb and was caught using a size 7 brown Rapala lure. Congratulation to Eoin and all proceeds of the sale of the first salmon very kindly went to charity…..

Sea of filth: raging storms and surging tides have dumped a mountain of waste on Northern Ireland's beaches and coastline – Belfast Telegraph

Belfast Telegraph - Tonnes of rubbish dumped on Tyrella Beach

This is the shocking legacy of the huge storms that battered our coastline in recent weeks.
A small army of volunteers has been working tirelessly to keep our beaches clear of litter – but they now face an overwhelming task tackling the mountain of litter washed up on Northern Ireland‘s shores by 80mph gales and high tides.
The huge storms hurled thousands of tonnes of rubbish on to beaches all round the coast, according to Tidy Northern Ireland……

Banba the basking shark's amazing 3,000-mile journey leaves experts open-mouthed – Belfast Telegraph

Belfast Telegraph - Basking sharks were until now thought to remain in temperate waters

Gentle giant tagged off Ireland travels to coast of Africa.
An incredible 3,000-mile journey by a basking shark has forced scientists to rethink their theories on the rare species.
Until now, it was thought that basking sharks were only found in temperate waters, but when a five-metre female — named Banba and tagged off Malin Head — was found to have travelled to the western coast of Africa, near Senegal, it turned the idea on its head.
It was the first time scientists had been able to discover where the huge fish travels to in winter when food is scarce in waters here…….

Thomas White wins Catch of the Week with this 179lb skate

Hamish Currie and a crew of specimen hunters were out last weekend and got into some big fish in deepwater  off the Antrim coast…

Another fine day in the north channel allowed us to once again go deep in search of specimens. After collecting herring and coalfish baits it was time to get the lines down in 500ft of water and we didn’t have to wait long before the usual suspects were hammering the baits.

Mulkear River is high priority in salmon protection and conservation, Irish Examiner

Inland Fisheries Ireland said that it regards the Mulkear River as a high priority in protecting and conserving the numbers of salmon returning to the catchment. The IFI has been criticised by the local Mulcair & District Anglers Club, which has called upon the ESB to take back responsibility for policing the river. The ESB said it has renewed the IFI’s contract. The ESB noted that the IFI, being the state agency charged with the protection of inland fisheries, is the group best placed to provide this protection service.

A barrow of fish for the Tralee Bay Sea Angling Club – 609 in total !

Daniel Brosnan (PRO) for Tralee Bay Sea Angling Club reports with style on the John Lacey Memorial Competition which took place on Sunday January 19th 2014 at Fenit Pier from 3pm to 7pm.

++++++++++++++ REPORT +++++++++++++++++

What a day of fishing, 609 fish caught and released, 33 anglers fishing and even better some new anglers on the scene…..

Conditions looked bad on my arrival at about 1.45pm but as you can see in the pictures it was great craic from start to finish. It wasn’t too cold and after the storms we had over the last few weeks maybe, we have all become weather hardened….

The pier was packed which is a marvellous sign for the middle of January and the fish played ball from start, till finish. There was a lot of small fish caught but there was some huge coalies and fat rockling. There was also sea gulls caught as you will see in the pictures but thankfully, due to club rules, all animals and fish were returned to there rightful habitat safe and sound….

Also when viewing the pictures you will Mr John Sheehan’s new Hummpa Lumppa, Sheehan Style….

It has taken john about four years to fine tune this beach buggy beast and he will be taking orders from the end of january on….

Back to the fishing, as i said it started fast and Colm McDaid who was pegged alongside me, pulled in successive fish in the first hour. I think he was on about 6 fish in 60 mins. The usual suspects were back at it also and Phil Ord pulled in a 40 cm COALIE and every knew it would be hard to beat that in the pools….

Chris o Sullivan had caught his 10 undersize in the first hour and there was literally fish being pulled onto the pier from everywhere….

Martin Mcgowan was going well and new Irish angling star Aidan O Halloran was giving everyone a master class…

Aidan o Sullivan who was back to his best after his blinding start last year, had a good few fish in the first half of the match. Connie o Sullivan was also catching fish every cast….

There was some nice flats caught also, Anthony Foley and his wife Niki had a nice flounder and Sean Fitzgerald had a cracker towards the end of the comp….

Out of the juniors new Tralee Bay Sea Angling Club angler Paddy McMahon was playing a blinder and this angler will be one to watch for the future….

What are the boys up to? ……

Tralee Bay SAC - Modern travelTralee Bay SAC - Modern travel (2)

Jack Lacey who had kindly sponsored the comp was also in attendance catching fish and it was great to see old and new members mixing up, chatting but most of all catching fish….

It was gonna be a tight comp, everyone knew that, David o Sullivan had some good fish towards the end, and Martin McGowan pulled a 30cm Dab and 33cm flounder out with his second last cast. Like Mr Troy Francis would say, you just can’t beat “LUCK”!!!!!!….

More new anglers, James Allman and Shane McMahon were catching a lot of fish and these lads will have to be watched for the year. If they keep coming they can finish high up in the master angler table, no problem….

Eugene Farrelly who had a slow start like always pulled about ten fish out of the last hour and seriously this comp was one of those when you just ran out of bait. I myself had twenty fish and i ran out of everything and couldn’t fish properly the last hour….

Great day had by all and for me the best comp on the pier in a while….

Don’t tackle with this bird!!!!!

Tralee Bay SAC - BirdTralee Bay SAC - Releasing birdThanks for everyone coming out and hopefully people can continue to come to the competitions. There is only 9 comps this year so people won’t have the option of missing a lot and there is a massive break in the summer for holidays and summer breaks…

Thanks for reading and hopefully see everyone at the next comp at sandy bay on the 16th of February…
