Salmon poaching at ‘crisis point’ say Limerick anglers – Limerick Leader

Salmon poaching is on the increase say Limerick anglers who are calling for immediate action

THE SHANNON, Mulcair and District Anglers have accused the ESB of failing in their responsibility of protecting salmon stocks in the lower Shannon and Mulcair river systems.

They say poaching is rampant in the tailrace in Ardnacrusha, Newport, Pallasgreen, Cappamore and around Keeper Hill.

“It is with great regret that the majority of anglers feel betrayed and let down by the ESB. The apathy of the ESB to ensure efficient protection has now reached crisis point as the Mulcair river system heads towards closure.

“Anglers are being forced to accept further restrictions year on year as the poachers are free to net salmon; fish from boats on the Shannon which is illegal; spear salmon under lamp in the upper reaches of the Newport river and main Mulcair…..

Wildlife at the river’s edge – Limerick Leader

The long winter shadows are stretching along our streets and creeping in through garden gates to greet us in the morning. At this time of year the motivation to get out and about can begin to wane. But for those brave enough to embrace the elements a winter wonderland full of wildlife is waiting to be discovered.

Putting your theory into practice is very important and on a recent cold but dry day I was standing at the junction of Sarsfield Bridge and O’Callaghan Strand and preparing to take the short walk to Westfields nature reserve. People were rushing by clad in an exotic assortment of colourful hats and woolly scarves. Like the river beneath my feet this mass of people surges with the tides, peaking in the morning and the evening. The daily rhythm of the Shannon also has an effect on wildlife…..

Salmon Watch Ireland welcomes reopening of file on sea lice issue – Irish Times

SALMON Watch Ireland (Swirl) has welcomed the decision of the European Commission (EC) to re-open its file on complaints submitted to it in 2009 about the impact of salmon farm generated sea lice on migrating juvenile wild salmon. The complaints had been lodged by Swirl and Friends of the Irish Environment (Fie).

The re-opening of the file has resulted from Fie drawing the attention of the EC to the fact that analysis of data about the impact of sea lice on juvenile wild salmons by the Marine Institute has been strongly contested by an eminent group of international scientists…..

Opportunity to be a leader in fish farm industry – Galway Independent

In the opinion piece by Jason Whooly of BIM in last week’s paper (‘Time to realise our salmon farming potential’, Wednesday 20 November) hope is expressed that the “local people will see the sense” in what BIM are proposing and will allow the development of an industrial salmon mega-farm in Galway Bay. Of course, there are elements of truth to Jason’s piece but equally there are some very important missing elements.

For example, Jason is correct in saying there has been “vociferous opposition”, but his claims that objection comes from “a small cadre of people with particular sectoral interest” is not true. Concerns have been raised publicly by a wide spectrum of  community stakeholders: from inshore shellfish fishermen, oyster growers, elements within the wider tourism sector, local primary health care organisations, An Taisce, national and international scientists, and from State Agencies like Inland Fisheries Ireland…..

A young 74 year old enjoys the estuaries of Wexford and Waterford

Aiden Willis
Aiden Willis

Damien Willis of Lough Fishing Buddies and his hale and hearty Dad Aiden headed to the Wexford / Waterford coastline last weekend to mark Aiden’s 74th Birthday. Damien reports:

For 37 years I have fished with my father Aiden around the coasts of Ireland. I am glad to say that my father whom is now in his seventies is still as active as ever, we continue to take time out together in pursuit of another specimen.

A great weekend in Wexford. My angling companions this weekend were Des Cannon and my father Aiden.

Aiden celebrated his 74th birthday on Friday and as a surprise we all returned to a favourite haunt in County Wexford.  Estuaries hold some wonderful angling tucked away off small roads along the coast lines of  south Wexford. An estuary is a partially enclosed body of water along the coast where freshwater from rivers and streams meets and mixes with salt water from the ocean. Estuaries and the lands surrounding them are places of transition from land to sea and freshwater to salt water. Although influenced by the tides, they are protected from the full force of ocean waves, winds, and storms by such land forms as barrier islands or peninsulas. Estuaries are an irreplaceable natural resource that must be managed carefully for the mutual benefit of all who enjoy and depend on them.

Damien Willis - Passage EastAs the tide began to to rise we moved location to Passage east. A short ferry trip across to the small fishing village in Waterford Harbour. Passage East has a nice long beach great for fishing with some fine specimen bass being caught, other fish being caught on the beach vary from codlin, whitting, flatfish and pollack. It is possible to walk from Passage to Woodstown when the tide is out, this is a great walk on a sunny morning to take in the views across the river towards Duncannon. The annual Waterford Estuary Mussel Festival is held in Passage East every September.

No luck on Lough Mask

Richie Johnston of Guide Fishing Ireland reports:

Normally on a trip to Lough Mask or Corrib you are met with plenty of wind and rain. This is sometimes good for the fishing. Last weekend I took a small group over for a few days pike fishing. Surprisingly, for the whole trip the loughs were as flat as a millpond.

Richie Johnston - Contentment at LoughWe had 4 anglers fishing from 3 boats. On Sunday morning we set out on Mask and started out trolling lures. One boat stayed in the deeps with large lures trolled up to 30 ft down. Another fished shallower water and it was them who hit the first fish. Mick had a pike of about 7 or 8lb on a trolled spoon. Within minutes he hooked another but it came off. A great start, we thought.. how wrong we were!!

We didn’t have another offer until 4pm when John had a small fish on a large plug. One of the lads tried float trolling deadbaits and did have a few dropped runs but the fish were very moody.

Day two was similar. Again Mick hooked 2 fish but landed neither. One interesting catch was a dead trout of around 4 lb, which a large deep diving plug hooked onto while near the lake bed. I am sure it was a lovely fish in its day. We fished until dark but had no other action from pike, although Paul did have some perch while drop shotting in the deep water. Other  anglers we met had similar results. Most put it down to the sudden change in weather and pressure. Before we left we did meet one angler who did have a fish of over 25 pounds. No matter there’s always next time.

Both nights we had a great time in Eddie Lynches Fairhill House in Clonbur, and as usual the food was superb. We are back again on Dec 8/9th. There is a couple of places available and details can be obtained by mailing [email protected]

He searched them here, he searched them there, but no spurs for the Wicklow wonder !

Heading for home...
Heading for home...

The Wicklow boys are at it again, chasing spurs.  All that fresh air works wonders…..pity the spurs didn’t come up to say hello this time though!

Kit Dunne of Wicklow Boat Charters steamed out 15 miles to an old haunt.  The tide was good and the craic mighty.  After a catch of of huss, whiting and codling but no sign of spurs Kit was left scratching his head……was there a spur party on some where he wasn’t invited to ?……was he dreaming?……something fishy eh?

Better luck next time Kit !!
