Templemore anglers worked hard to catch reluctant pike

Michals Fishing Tackle Shop in Portlaoise held it’s open Pike fishing competition on Templemore Town Park Lake yesterday.  The weather was good and the turnout reasonable.  The pike however had different ideas and didn’t play ball.  Never the less Kozakiewiez Marcin did manage to catch 3 pike to win him first place.  Jimmy Devanney took second and Radoslav Bochnan third.

Looking forward to a new season at Blackwater Lodge – 2014 prices remain the same as 2013

Ian Powell of the Blackwater Lodge sets out his charges for 2014 and anglers will be glad to hear that prices remain at the reduced figure of 2013:

We took the bold step in 2013 to drastically reduce prices in order to combat the recession, so that salmon anglers could keep fishing and new anglers could still be attracted to the sport.
A significantly higher number of anglers than normal supported us in this initiative whose objective was to provide affordable salmon fishing, and as a result of your much appreciated support we are able to maintain these attractive prices moving forward into 2014.

                                            Cast your eye on this……………

For the 2014 season, fishing rates on the Lodge 11 exclusive prime beats on the world-famous Cork Blackwater will remain in the range from €15 per day in the early season to €80 per day maximum in the prime time during late summer & autumn.

They haven't gone away you know…… there's bass for the experienced angler

Guide Sean Jordan of Bass fishing Wexford enjoys some excellent bass fishing in Wexford:
At last we had some decent water clarity, and with the full moon tidal cycle, with water temp 13c, combined with plenty of bait fish around the bass wouldn’t be going too far.   Last Saturday afternoon was a great session in term’s of number’s, no fish over 60cm, but between 2 angler’s 29 bass were met + released over a 3 hour session, and most on surface lure’s !!  Sammy’s + spook’s got smashed time + time again, but it didn’t matter what was threw out, it got nailed !!
Sean Jordan - Nov Bass (1) Sean Jordan - Nov Bass (2)
Another session and the clumsy diving and squabbling of herring gull’s gave away the position of the easy picking’s of sprat near the surface, and sure enough straight away we met some plump bass on weedless shad set up’s, bass are now in peak condition now, and top fighter’s.   Hopefully we’ll be meeting some bigger fish over the next few week’s.  There’s still plenty of sport to be had, you just have to know where and when, the age old question……  I’ve taken some booking’s for 2014 over the last couple week’s, but there’s still plenty of fishing left in 2013 !!

Paul Moinester USA, A Man on a Mission (This Time Irish Pike)

Paul Moinester With the One That Did Not Get Away!!!

During the last week I had the pleasure of fishing with Paul Moinester from the USA. Paul is a very driven young man with an innate affinity with the sport of angling. His passion for angling and the environment is evident from the get go. He is undoubtedly one of the most enthusiaistic fly anglers that I have come across in my forty odd years in angling. If it swims, Paul would be happy to give it a go and he simply could not wait to get out onto the water to try for his first Irish pike.

Irish Pike Fishing is Never Black and White
Irish Pike Fishing is Never Black and White

As we headed out for an afternoon session on to Lough Ramor in Virginia in Co. Cavan I was unsure as to how the fish would respond to the fly. The weather has been milder than normal for the time of year and fish seemed to be active. Some coarse fish had moved into the harbour in Virginia and coarse fish were still in evidence along some of the lakeside margins. As we chatted and drifted the boat over some likely holding spots we both had a number of hits and misses before Paul struck into his first Irish pike. After several strong runs, a fish of about eight pounds exploded onto the surface and I remarked that it was a small fish. Paul looked surprised, happy, perplexed and disappointed all at the same time. My fault. An eight pound fish is a nice fish but knowing that there were much bigger fish there I was hoping that it was one of the bigger ones. I explained to Paul (while taking my foot out of my mouth) that an eight pound pike was a nice pike on the fly but that there were much bigger fish in the lake. As the spirited fish came to the boat still full of life I could see that it was lightly hooked and took the leader to land the fish only to be left with a nice pike fly dangling just above the water. Did I feel bad!!! Paul kindly passed it off and having learned that there were bigger fish to be caught he simply set about trying to catch one of the Lough Ramor’s monster pike. We both fished very hard for the remainder of the session and only had one or two more hits but no more fish for the afternoon.

The following day we had an early enough start on what was a beautiful day and we were rewarded with a fish within the first half hour. A spirited jack pike had obligingly darted from under the boat to seize the fly no more that two feet in front of us. The fish was landed, photographed and released back safely to the water. We fished over a number of likely holding areas and Paul hooked and landed a coulple well conditioned fish and at the end of the day we had boated a total of 6 pike. Just like myself Paul usually has to be dragged off the water and we must have had dozens of last casts and last drifts. Eventually, the light beat us and we headed back down the lake to get the boat off the water and prepare for the journey home. I was happy because Paul had his first Irish pike and Paul was happy because he had landed his first Irish pike. He cannot wait to get back again to secure his first double figured Irish Esox lucius. A big thanks to Paul for some of his outstanding photos.

Trolling, dead-baiting, jerk-baiting or on the fly.  Pike fishing has an sensational appeal to many anglers.  Terry Jackson’s preference is for the fly. Rooting through the sewing basket, children’s crafts or simply robbing from the Christmas tree gives him the material for his home-tied fly variations.  Hitting fish in the 20 bracket with anticipation of a monster 30lber is the drug that drags us back again and again. Irish Angling Update – 21/11/13

Despite the very cold and often harsh weather conditions in the past week, there was some very good angling reported from many parts of the country both on inland waters and at sea.  This was also despite some flurries of snow and hard frost conditions prevailing during the early part of the week.  As I have often said before the Irish Angler is a very hardy soul and will fish in the coldest of conditions.

The National Coarse Fish Federation of Ireland confirmed that they had secured the Word Feeder Championships to be held on Inniscarra Lake in Co. Cork next year.  Well known Dublin match angler Richie Keegan won the latest competition at Oaklands with a terrific catch of 121 lb. of mixed coarse fish.

On Lough Ramor, Damien Willis caught some very nice pike on hot orange flies at the weekend.  Roly Byrne reported some nice pike fishing from the River Barrow. Angling guide Richie Johnson brought a French visitor Alexia out pike fishing in the midlands and she landed her first ever pike.  Well known Midland piker Barry Darby won the Phillip Moffat Memorial Cup with a nice catch of pike on Lough Derravarragh last Sunday.  Pike to 15 lb. were taken by a group of anglers from the ESB fishing with angling guide Peadar O’Brien in Co. Monaghan. 46 Pike were reported at the Newgrange Active Angling League event held on a river in Co. Cavan. The 2013 All Ireland Inter Club Team Championships was fished on Cavan/Monaghan waters. The winners were the Slovakia Angling Club and there was some excellent pike recorded on the day.  A cracking Quantum perch for young April Flanagan in Mullingar wins our Catch of the Week. A group of anglers from Portadown had a great day’s fishing with Gerry Olin in Belturbet on local waters. There will be an open Pike competition this Sunday on Templemore Park Lake in Co. Tipperary.

On the east coast, anglers deep sea fishing with charter skipper Kit Dunne records some good spurdogs and bullhuss last weekend.  A surprise big three bearded rockling was reported taken on the first cast in the south east by Gerard Doran.  Peter Murphy used crab from the shore to hook nice bass and codling near Youghal.  Local bass guide Jim Hendrick from Wexford advised anglers that bass fishing is currently offering a fair chance of success as conditions are very good. A group of experienced anglers from Wexford fished with charter skipper Pat Condon and had a great day deep sea fishing out from Cobh landing a great range of quality species. Congrats to Steve Turner on winning leg 6 of the boat master angler series 2013 sponsored by Galway Bay Fishing. In doing so he secured the overall series for 2013 to be crowned Galway Buccaneers SAC boat master angler 2013.  Elsewhere Danny Sweeney won leg 9 of the Shore Master Angler series catching coalfish and flounder in Co. Galway. Lashing rain and strong winds did not put off some persistent anglers on the South coast as some nice cod were taken from the shore on crab.

Carrigavantry in Co. Waterford is producing excellent fishing for stocked rainbow and brown trout and Jason O’Riordan recorded a great fish during the week on fly.  Sue Atkins a visitor from South Australia had a great days fishing out with angling guide Mick Flanagan catching rainbow trout and pike.

Finally wrap up well in this cold weather but as you can see around Ireland, there is plenty of good fishing to be enjoyed.

Tight lines especially in Ireland,

Paul Bourke

Five star piking from Esox Lodge

A nice long pike for a Portadown Piker
A nice long pike for a Portadown Piker

Gerry Olin from Esox Lodge in Belturbet has had a super weekend with a group of anglers from Portadown.  These enthusiastic pikers landed some fine fish, many in the double figures. Gerry tells us ” The drop of temperature seemed to get the fish on the feed. Bait fish were shoaling up in the bays and the pike were smashing them. Photo shows the result from 3 runs at the same time and three fish landed haven’t seen that before. Hopefully it continues.”

A Winter fishing paradise at Carrigavantry

Jason with his catch of the day.

If it’s some Winter fishing you are after, there’s no better place than the scenic Carrigavantry.  Hidden in the hills behind Tramore in Co. Waterford, this 30 acre reservoir offers some excellent fishing and there’s no better judge than Jason O’Riordan who was fishing there this week.  This super brown trout was his catch.  Nice one Jason!
