Big Dave lands a female at the Maidens

107lb Male Skate
107lb Male Skate

Peter Ross of Boat Angling Ireland joins Mark and Dave for a trip out on the ‘Harry O’ to the Maidens and reports:

There is just no stopping big Dave at the moment, he has hooked at least one skate on his last 4 trips to the Maidens ,and today was no different. the last 2 weeks have been pure crap weatherwise and next week looks no better . Yesterday there was a brief window of half decent weather before it was to turn nasty again.

Fish on for Dave
Fish on for Dave

So with time limited we went straight out to the Maidens and used frozen coalies and mackerel for bait. Mark and me used big whole coalies , but Dave was happy using beefed up doggie traces with smaller baits. After about 90 mins the wind died down a bit and it was quite pleasant in the sun We were just tucking in to chilli hotdogs for breakfast when Dave was into a skate.

After about an hour a decent female skate was at the side of the boat. It was tagged ,measured and safely returned It turned out at 174lbs a nice female.

Meanwhile not much action for Mark and me, although we did get a few decent bites. Around mid-day the wind started to pick up from the south ,slightly earlier than forecast, then Dave was in again, yet another skate. He managed to get it to the side of the boat in 50 mins. It was a male which turned out at 107lbs.

107lb Male Skate

The skate had a chunk missing from it’s rear left wing – interesting
We decided to head in in case the weather got any worse. When I reeled in I noticed my trace had been bitten clean through about 6 inches from the hook. Never even noticed a bite to be honest but I was wondering what might have snaffled a 2lb coalie and bitten clean through 300lb mono, maybe some big tope still about . Anchor lifted we headed back to Ballylumford where we had our lunch and a refreshment or 2 in our boatclub.
Good day out for the time of year. Bet you Big Davy slept well last night !

A well deserved lunch !

Irish Shore Angling Team Take Gold in European Championships.

Warren Doyle reports that the European Federation of Sea Anglers (EFSA) held their 2013 Shore Championships in the Heinkenszand, Zeeland area of Northern Holland from the 28th of October to November 1st 2013.

The competition started on Wednesday on beaches around Westkapelle & Domburg with an onshore wind making casting very difficult. Best result on the night was for local angler Arjan Rijnberg with 36 fish. Team Ireland had good results with Joe Byrne 2nd in his zone, Micheàl Quinn 3rd & both Clive Ivory & Warren Doyle scoring 4ths. This from 16 anglers to each of 5 zones. The result put Ireland in 1st place, 2 points ahead of Italy.

Day 2 was fished on the opposite side of the dyke with an offshore wind. Conditions were very trying and fish very hard to find. Best result on the night was Arjan Rijnberg once again with 34 fish. This was an exception though with some zones being won with as few as 5 fish. Team Ireland had a super night. Micheàl Quinn leading the way with a 7 fish zone win, Warren Doyle with a 3 fish zone 2nd, Joe Byrne with a 19 fish zone 2nd & Clive Ivory with an 8 fish zone 3rd. This rocketed the team 13 points ahead of Italy with Netherlands 7 points further back.

Day 3 was brought back to the same beach as the first night. This was a head to head with Italy for the title. Team Italy fought a very hard battle to bridge the gap & won the night by 54 points to Ireland’s 50 from 2 fourths & 2 fifths. Best individual was Arjan Rijnberg with 28 fish.

The species of fish caught were Dab, Whiting, Bass, Flounder, Plaice, Dragonet, Dover Sole & Lesser Spotted Dogfish.

These Championships were fished on the same beaches as the World Championships in 2012. The help & advice given by Ireland’s medal winning team at those championships was invaluable to team EFSA Ireland.

The final team result was: Ireland 165 points. Italy 156 points. The Netherlands 138 points. This is the first time Ireland has won the European Shore Angling Championship. After near misses as far back as 1999 at Langeland in Denmark when The Netherlands took the title by a single point from Ireland.

Individual: 1. Arjan Rijnberg, Netherlands. 2. Roberto Miserandino, Italy. 3. Volker Claus, Germany.

Team Ireland: Joe Byrne, Courtown, Co. Wexford – 4th.

Micheàl Quinn, Bray, Co. Wicklow – 7th.

Clive Ivory, Gorey, Co. Wexford – 12th.

Warren Doyle, Bray, Co. Wicklow – 13th.

Shay O’Neill, Ballybrack, Co. Dublin – 40th.

November Bass for the West Cork angler

David Norman reports from his blog West Cork Bass Fishing :

As bad forecasts go this one wasn’t too bad, the storms of the previous week had calmed but I knew that dirty water as a result of all the rain we’ve had and suspended weed would be an issue. I went with my favorite lure for these dirty conditions a big white shad to which I added a rattle for good measure. This particular shad was the Sawamura One Up 6″ mounted on a 5/0 EWG Springlock 5.25g which is weedless, flys a long way and presents a nice big target with a sound signature to match.  When you add it all up A lot of time and effort went into catching this fish, loading line, tying leaders, mounting soft plastics onto hooks at home, packing the car driving to the area, overnight accommodation  an early start struggling into clothing and waders and that’s all before the fishing actually starts!
So was it all worth it for one fish? For me, and at this time of year, I would have to say YES…

(Scale samples were taken from this fish to be sent off and an entry made in a logbook both as part of the Inland Fisheries Ireland – National Bass Programme)

Leave no trace…..only footprints

Jim Hendrick of Probassfisher is an experienced angler and guide.  He tells us:

I have spent a long time learning how to catch fish, I have also invested time in trying to return them as effectively as possible, at times I know this is not always the case but its a part of the daily process of guiding to try to ensure good fish ‘returns’.

Currently I’m looking even further at how I might improve other aspects and impacts the business may be having in the coastal environment. I am trying to learn how best to minimise these impacts and indeed pass that knowledge on to other anglers who may be interested.

In a world subjected to ever increasing recreational pressure every little bit of work helps. I have always felt that no matter what else may be happening and who may be responsible I believe its important to try to do something better, to be seen to be trying, to have the ability to say this is what I am doing to help things – Visit Leave No Trace Ireland

How to Correct 5 Common Casting Mistakes

Pete Kutzer from Orvis Fly-Fishing School in Manchester, Vermon has taught thousands of people how to cast, or how to cast better, and here he talks about the five most common mistakes that he sees on the water:

  • starting with the rod too high off the water;
  • not stopping the rod at the end of each forward and backcast;
  • going too far back with the rod on the backcast;
  • trying to “throw” the fly; and
  • tailing loops.

For the most part, these errors are pretty easy to correct, and if you pay attention to the solutions Pete offers here, your casting will jump immediately to the next level. You’ll find that you can cast longer, more accurately, and without the frustrating tangles that can waste a lot of time.

Anglers Reeling With Delight at Curragh Springs Fishery

Kildare Angler Jim Muldoon in Action at Curragh Springs

Shaun Hegarty reports that the fishing at Curragh Springs continues to improve with good conditions most days of the week. Even with the heavy rain at times the water remains crystal clear. The weekend saw the best returns for some time and those who were prepared to stand out in the ever changing weather were well rewarded with fish. Indeed reports of some anglers catching upwards of 20 fish. Have a look at Paul Mc Graths blog on moyfisher.wordpress.com

Paul fished here on Sunday with a few of his friends really enjoying the day out.

The fish are well spread out around the lake with no particular hot-spots and are much more active than they have been recently. On the calm mornings fish were seen moving on the surface and Anglers were having a lot of sport with fish chasing small lures, nymphs and wet flies. When the breeze got up later in the days the fish tended to go deeper and Buzzers fished around 4 to 6 feet were working well. Although no big fish were landed this week, the heaviest coming in at around 4.5 lb landed on Sunday to Billy McGhee up on a visit from Mayo, most anglers are more than pleased to land the hard-fighting Curragh Springs rainbows being stocked at present.
