Angler Liam Gilsenan takes Top Rod with a cracking 15lb 6 oz pike at Derravaragh

Michael Flanagan, angling guide and reporter, reports:

Derravaragh Anglers hosted the Murtagh Cup for pike. It was certainly a mixed day weather and fishing, and the pike were reluctant to take the bait. Mind you local Angler Liam Gilsenan charmed a cracking pike into taking his lure, and produced a super fish of 15lbs 6oz to take Top Rod.

I fished with Uncle Pat and we had a good day out on Derravaragh. I hooked a good fish just before lunch, but could not hold onto to the fish.  Pat got a run on a dead bait later in the evening, and finished 2nd with 6lbs 3oz, Glore chairman Eddie o, Donnell was 3rd. Presentation took place back in Murtaghs Bar, and it was a lovely evening with super food and mouth watering pints of Guinness. I notice a few posters up on the wall, and local coarse Angler Deckie Byrne is playing in Murtaghs regularly at the weekend. Certainly a cracking night out.

Newgrange Active Angling Winter League Kicks Off

This Young Angler is Happy With His Catch at the Newgrange Active Angling Winter League

Angling Coach and Guide Brendan O’Reilly reports that the first leg of the Newgrange Active Angling Winter League was in the eye of the storm. High winds and some driving rain did not put the pike off but it was still hard going for the young men of Newgrange Active Angling. Despite the appalling weather conditions, 22 fish to 7lb-13ozs with a total weight of 58lbs 8ozs were caught and released.

Darragh O’Neill from Drogheda came out on top for the day with 4 fish, one of 7-13, the heaviest fish on the day. Glen Finnegan of Duleek was 2nd with 4 fish and Jason Campbell of Duleek in 3rd with 3 fish and a personal best of 7-04 a happy lad. Coach Brendan O’Reilly was kept very busy with the scales and camera wading around the high water in a lake in Monaghan. Next leg is on the 17th November and here’s hoping that water levels will have dropped a little by then.

Fresh water adventure throws up nearly a 100 on a wet and cold day

Photographer and angler Steven Neely doesn’t shy away from the rain and the cold.  Wrapped up well he headed out last Saturday and was well rewarded for his efforts.  He reports:

I have been promising myself to specifically target Perch on the lure gear and on Saturday I finally took the plunge. We geared up with small metal spoons, jigs, plugs and soft plastics – all the usual suspects really plus a few secret weapons of course!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAs always the weather was far from ideal. 7 degrees and torrential rain made it, lets say a little cold and wet!

Normally this would dampen the spirits but it was apparent that after the first few casts the place was stuffed full of Perch! The first cast produced a fish – not big but a fish. Was this a sign of things to come or was it simply one of those days were you catch a fish at start and never get a touch the rest of the day?

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThankfully our luck was in and the place was just crammed full of fish!

We started off using Illex Pintails on small jig heads which seemed to work rather well. We then switched over to some small sinking plugs made by IMA and DUO such as the Sukari and Spearhead Ryuki. These accounted for a few fish but they seemed to be more tuned into the soft lures.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAs always the Fiiish 70 mm Black Minnow was deadly effective and it wasn’t long before we had well over 50 Perch between us.

I decided to change tactics and rig up a 3inch Senko rigged Texas style with a 3g cone lead. I picked my target area which was a submerged tree stump – cast the lure in and let it contact the bottom. A quick twitch and jiggle of the lure resulted in a sharp thump and then – bang. Fish on! It was a great feeling to be actively hunting out the bigger fish around the heavy structure.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAHopefully this is just the start of our fresh water adventures – now the weather is starting to turn and our chances on the open coast are diminishing rapidly it will be Pike and Perch in the coming months.

We had nearly 100 fish between the two of us – what a day despite the rain and cold.

Tight lines

Dutch anglers vow to return and catch the ones that got away !

Ronnie with his first Pike.
Ronnie with his first Pike.

Ronnie and wife Gerdina from Holland decided to return to Ireland for another Pike fishing holiday but this time stayed with Kevin and Jane at Melview Lodge in Longford, Kevin said they were both experienced anglers when it came to Pike fishing. They caught most fish using lures, but also managed to catch some using dead bait and jerk baiting methods. They both lost some big fish during their stay here, but I’m sure they will return to catch the ones that got away.

The catching of a monster pike – Irish Times

Frank McNally recently told us the story of the River Finn monster, an enthralling tale of a northern denizen of the deep that bears comparison with any of the fabled accounts of Irish lough monsters. Sadly, like that of its Scottish cousin, it was a case of another one that got away.

Here is the story of one that didn’t get away.

On the morning of May 9th, 1862, two local anglers, Patrick Sheehy and John Naughton, went trolling for pike in the Killaloe area. Lough Derg had the reputation of harbouring monster pike and the anglers were prepared for this eventuality: their lure was a shoe lift, or shoe horn, hooks attached, and tied to stout line. They were to need it, as the enfolding account shows, recorded by John Sheehy (Patrick’s father) in the Limerick Chronicle of May 13th, 1862…….

Some lovely browns and rainbows for the Carrigavantry angler

Fished Carrigavantry this morning for 5 hours.  The day started off cold but I spotted a few damsel nymphs making their way to the margins and that gave me an extra confidence.  The first few drifts produced three nice brown trout to a dark dabbler, one of which was real belter of a fish.  As the day warmed up the rainbows also came on the take.  I finished the session having caught four browns and four rainbows and missing several more good takes.

Á la carte Trout style – a taste of what is to come at the Irish Fly Fair

Jason O’Riordan discusses the diet of our trout and gives us a taste of what is to come at the Irish Fly Fair:

Ahead of my talk at the Irish Fly Fair in Galway on November 9th/10th on Winter tactics for Stillwater Trout I thought it might be interesting to show  some of the aquatic insects the Trout in the Waterford Lakes tend to feed on during the year.  Now I’m no entomologist but here are a few photos of what I have spooned from the fish nonetheless.

What the trout are feeding on should have a major bearing on what flies to use at this time of year and how to fish them?  This approach has helped me to catch consistently on the Waterford Reservoirs and to catch overwintered browns like this in January????

If you are interested in this approach to fly selection come along to my talk at the Irish Fly Fair and see the flies I will be using this winter and how I am fishing them.  The talk will cover both imitative flies and flies that just work when the fish are feeding on certain “bugs” during the winter and indeed the spring.  For more information on the Irish Fly Fair click here, and on the Waterford Reservoirs click here.

First Time Sea Angler has Double Hook Up of Bass and Turbot on County Louth Coastline

John Murphy With His Double Hook Up on the Co Louth Coastline

Sea Angling expert Peter Cunningham from the Drogheda Angling Centre was on the Louth Coastline again this morning  Saturday 26th October accompanied by first time sea angler John Murphy from Drogheda. On a rainy morning with light winds the lads headed out to the Co. Louth coastline to make a few casts. John had be promising to give this a go for some time and finally got the opportunity and was rewarded with a nice double hook up of a small bass and a turbot. A successful start to sea angling by any standards. The lads also had a number of other species including a 24cm rockling.

For advice on tackle, techniques and up to date fishing information why not drop into Peter in the Drogheda Angling Centre or drop him an email at [email protected] Peter can also be contacted at 087 2169726
