A real United Nations of anglers for Delphi

Delphi Fishery Finlough
Delphi Fishery Finlough

Fishery Manager David McEvoy reports from Delphi:

07/05/2013: Week 18 was indeed a real United Nations of anglers with representatives from Germany, Switzerland, Ireland and England. We finished the week with eight fish all taken in the river. Finlough was proving to be fickle, with difficult winds and temperatures again struggling to achieve double figures.

Since my last update we finished with 4 more last week, all taken by a couple of regular German anglers. The fish were taken from the Schoolhouse, Rock, Horseshoe and Rock on a Collie Dog, Cascade, Willie Gunn and Delphi Collie. The fish all sea liced weighed in at 9lbs3ozs, 7lbs12ozs, 6lbs14ozs and 5lbs12ozs respectively.

So far this week fishing has been difficult with water heights varying quite a lot and temperatures still low. I have seen fish in the river but they are proving challenging to catch.

Jimmy Keogh has however managed to land a fish of approx. 5.5lbs from Doolough on a Willie Gunn yesterday.

There will be plenty of water for fish to run as there is more rain forecast tonight, so I’d say tomorrow morning the heavy rods, lines and flies will be out.

I must also advise you bloggers to check out our new You tube video “In Pursuit of Silver” which can be seen on our website.

Gladly our angling in April was a big improvement on the previous two months with 37 fish landed in total.

The month started as March had finished with extremely hard, dry and cold weather. There was beautiful sunshine during the day and then bitterly cold at night with grass minimums as low as -7.9 degrees C.

We did have a few anglers who kept plugging away in week 14 and were duly rewarded for their efforts. Peter Morrison managed to take a fish of 8lbs3ozs from the Holly pool with the water level at 5. Joe Burke and Doug Keating both managed fish off Finlough in difficult conditions.

Credit has to be given to all anglers in week 15 who tried hard, despite the river being below 0 and temperatures still bitterly cold. We failed to land any fish for the week but it wasn’t  for the want of trying. Towards the end of the week the weather finally broke and we ended up having plenty of water for the rest of the month.

The water made all the difference as fish started to run and we landed 14 for week 16. With the increase in temperatures Finlough proved successful with 8 landed, 4 from the river and 2 from Doolough. Successful anglers were Rob Fanshawe, Guy Hollis, David Dunne, Bob Hadden, David Parry, Michael Roden, Michael Wymes and Paul Wymes.

The good fishing continued into week 17 with 16 fish landed for the week. Again Finlough proved most successful with 11 landed, 4 off the river and 1 off Doolough. Successful anglers were Heribert who landed 5, including one of 14lbs5ozs, Heinz Hoefler, Heidi Hoefler, Bernd Bieber, Ken Williams (first ever), Jens Kober, Michael Pettigrew, Fredo Dietrich, Tim Chilcott (first ever) and Urs (who has become one of an elite group of anglers to follow a fish under the bridge at the bottom of the Meadow pool, and land it!!)

For the remaining few days in April we landed another 4 fish. As temperatures got colder again all 4 were taken off the river, with the lakes once again proving difficult.  Successful anglers were Urs, Geoff Lucas and Fredo Dietrich.

That brought total for the month to 37 which is one ahead of the 10 year average. Hopefully this trend will continue into the month of May.

Spate on Owenmore in Kerry, should fish from Saturday

9th May 2013 : We have a big flood in the river at the moment. It will fish from Saturday on and with the showers forecast we should have nice water well into next week.

The fish that were in the estuary waiting for this water will certainly run into the system and with the temperature warming we should have some good sport. We have had some trout up to this averaging 3/4 lb to 1 1/2 lbs ( juniors) with two fish just under 3 lbs caught and released.

Keith Barry launches Fisheries Awareness Week with help from Siofra and Fionn
Keith Barry launches Fisheries Awareness Week with help from Siofra and Fionn

Keith Barry helped to launch Fisheries Awareness Week which starts this weekend and with almost 60 events across 18 counties it’s got to be the best way to get some new started in angling. There are events dedicated to sea anglingpike anglingtrout angling and coarse angling and salmon angling as well as family fun daysschool days and more. With so much going on there’s sure to be something happening near you, so why not find out more inside the FAW website

Josh Higginson who caught his first specimen 1.35 kg Twaite Shad last weekend wins Catch of the Week

At this time of year trout anglers are firmly focused on Mayfly but the weather has set back hatches and everything seems to be running almost 3 weeks behind. At Lough Derg, which is normally Ireland’s earliest lake there have been very sparse hatches and no real fishing to the Mayfly yet. The hatches in general are poor on Corrib, but Mask has come alive and is really firing. Some great fishing was also reported on Lough Conn with anglers landing up to 7 fish over the 13 inch limit. Some big trout were reported from Lough Arrow and on Lough Sheelin the lack of hatching fly is frustrating anglers though some good fish have been caught.

There are reports of some great spring salmon starting to show on the Erriff, and the first salmon off Costello.  Ballisodare Fishery continues to produce good sport, as does Lough Beltra and on the River Moy where very good catches have been reported from the East Mayo Anglers’ water. The Drowes was quiet recently though there was an improvement over the Bank Holiday weekend when salmon to 15lb were landed. There are reports that the Lee has a few good salmon in it at present and the ESB fishery has seen a few fish landed.

The 2013 Waterways Ireland Classic Fishing Festival came to a close on Friday 4th May, after a week of extremes. The two hundred and sixteen anglers shivered in the cold on Monday, got sunburn on Tuesday and put the waterproofs on again for Friday.  Second day winner Peter Vasey, from Stoke Newington in London, won the competition with a total weight of 39kgs 510gms, netting him the top prize of £5,000, a Crystal Chalice and a Diawa rod and reel.  The NCFFI Senior Canals Championship took place on 4th and 5th May on the Royal Canal near Enfield. 29 anglers took part in the now annual event which proved to be a very tough match with results being lower than was expected. Sean Ward was the eventual winner with 7.23kg. Better fishing was reported from the River Erne near Belturbet where mixed bags up to 70lb were caught on Inishmuck.

There were more reports of bass from Kerry and Cork but what was more encouraging to see was the capture of a fine bass from the Louth coastline.

The weather outlook is not great for the time of year.  Temperatures will be below normal for the time of year. Saturday will be a cool, breezy and fairly cloudy day, with further rain or showers at times, some heavy. But there will be some bright or short sunny spells too – probably best in the late afternoon and evening. Top temperatures just 10 to 12 C, in fresh and gusty westerly winds. Some bright or sunny spells for a time on Sunday morning, but cloudy, damp weather will push in from the Atlantic as the day progresses. Top temperatures 12 to 15 C., in moderate to fresh southwesterly winds.

The early days of next week will also be unsettled and changeable.

Tight lines,
Myles Kelly

13 year old Joshua Higginson lands a fine specimen twaite shad of 1.35 Kg. on the River Barrow at St. Mullins and is our Catch of the Week.

Josh Higginson who caught his first specimen 1.35 kg Twaite Shad last weekend wins Catch of the Week

Duncan Cole in a email to angling journalist Liam Kane sent in a report of some recent Shad fishing from the River Barrow at St. Mullins

Just to update you on how the fishing went after we met on Saturday morning at St Mullins.

We caught no Shad at all on Saturday and after chatting to everyone up and down the river we only heard of three Shad caught that day. I did have a consolation prize of a 4lb trout though.

On Sunday we were on the river for 8:00am with my keen apprentice trying to catch his first Shad.

The river bank was empty so I wasn’t too optimistic but we had only been fishing for a few minutes when Joshua hooked his first Shad which put up a superb fight and was weighed and witnessed at 1.35 kg – a very happy young angler.  I caught only 2 shad and another trout of 2 ½ lb.

In the afternoon we entered the Annual Shad completion which had 53 entrants this year. Only 3 fish were caught in the four hours but fortunately mine was heaviest at 1.15 kg

Although no fish were caught in the junior section, all at the prize giving were given a collection of coarse tackle donated by the late Jim Sloan who recently past away.

On Monday we were on the river for 8:00am again but the fishing was very slow and after 4 hours i had only three shad and Josh had one, which were all very small ( one was only 0.35 kg )

Duncan Cole with the trophy for the heaviest Shad in competition

Headed off at 1:30pm for the 4 ½ hour drive home.  So despite the lack of Shad we had an excellent weekend and will be back next year.

Hope you get back to get a few Shad if they eventually turn up this year.

I’ve attached a few pictures you might like for the magazine.

Cheers  –  Duncan

Peter Vasey wins Waterways Ireland Classic Fishing Festival

The 2013 Waterways Ireland Classic Fishing Festival came to a close on Friday 4th May, after a week of extremes. The two hundred and sixteen anglers shivered in the cold on Monday, got sunburn on Tuesday and put the waterproofs on again for Friday.

Second day winner Peter Vasey, from Stoke Newington in London, won the competition with a total weight of 39kgs 510gms, netting him the top prize of £5,000, a Crystal Chalice and a Diawa rod and reel. His final day’s catch of 4kgs 660gms from the changeable Trory section was enough to capture the overall honours. Pete, who fishes with Team Sensas Oakwood Angling, has been coming to Fermanagh to enjoy the fishing and the hospitality for twelve years.

Second overall was Kevin Rowles from Devizes, whose total catch of 32kgs 250gms earned him £2,000, a Crystal Trophy, and a Diawa tackle prize.  In third place was another Classic regular, Stephen Priestly from Manchester £1,500 and a Crystal Trophy for his total catch of 28kgs 280gms.

In addition to the individual prizes, the very popular four-man team event was also held throughout the three days of the Waterways Ireland Classic.  The winning team, Dads & Lads, amassed a total catch of 74kgs 510gms, landing them cash prizes and trophies.

Local anglers fared better than they did last year.  Nick Seddon from Enniskillen was top of the local league in 5th place overall, with previous Classic winner, John Potters from Lisbellaw in 8th place.  Gareth Williams from Lisbellaw finished in 25th place.

In the weeks leading up to the Waterways Ireland Classic, the continuing cold weather gave the organisers something of a headache when considering the selection of sections.  Two sections at Crom on Upper Lough Erne were brought in to play, which produced consistently good weights throughout the week.

The Classic is sponsored for the tenth year by Waterways Ireland and is organised by Fermanagh District Council, in conjunction with Inland Fisheries Group, Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure.

Sean Ward wins NCFFI Senior Canals Championship

The NCFFI Senior Canals Championship took place on 4th and 5th May on the Royal Canal near Enfield. 29 anglers took part in the now annual event which proved to be a very tough match with results being lower than was expected. Cold conditions in the lead up to the event probably responsible for the low weights.

The Saturday match resulted in a clear lead for Sean Ward who had nearly 5kgs from an end peg including a 7 minute fight with a nice tench just before the all-out. With the nearest weights just over 2kg, it would take a similar good catch to overhaul him on Sunday.

While the fishing was generally better on Sunday, biggest weights were around 2.5 kgs including a nice catch by Sean himself of around 2.3 kgs leaving him the overall winner.

The NCFFI wishes to thank Waterways Ireland for sponsorship of the event and for all the anglers who took part.

Results:

  • 1st Place      Sean Ward      7.23kgs
  • 2nd Place     Ron Durkin     4.03kgs
  • 3rd Place      Par Bartley      3.65Kgs
