Congratulations to Denis Goulding who won the Corcoran Cup at the Irish Trout Fly Fishing Association’s (ITFFA) Leinster Championship with a fabulous bag of trout for 10lb 6oz. This competition was hosted by Lough Owel Trout Preservation Association and took place on Sunday 12th May 2013. Whilst fishing condition were initially favourable they deteriorated in the afternoon when the south westerly wind turned blustery and intermittent showers arrived. In excess of 100 anglers competed and the competition was very intense with anglers requiring a bag weight of at least 3lb 11.4 oz to secure themselves a position on the team will represent Leinster at the 2013 Interprovincial Match.

Denis, who is no stranger to the angling scene and has represented Leinster and Ireland on numerous occasions, also won the Michael Donnelly Cup for the heaviest with a fabulous trout of 3lb 11oz. Other successful anglers included Gary Coakley (Dublin Trout), Stuart Marry (Balbriggan Skerries), Noel Farrar (Silverstream), John Cooke (Lough Bane), James Fegan (Wicklow), Pat Noonan (Lough Owel), Philip Berns (Wicklow), Mick McCormack (Brosna), Eugene Fagan (Lough Owel), Dave Canning (Dublin Trout), John Murray (Lough Owel), Brendan Murray (Lough Owel), Noel Shields (Silverstream) and Colin Cahill (Lough Bane). These anglers will join Andy Duncan (Brosna), Gerry Heaslip (Dublin Trout) and Terry walsh, who retained their position from the 2012 league, in representing Leinster at the 2013 ITFFA Interprovincial Championship which will be held at Lough Mask on 7th September 2013. The 2013 Leinster Team will be captained by renowned angler and fly tyer, Mr Noel Shields. We wish Noel and his team the very best of luck in their attempt to secure the Interprovincial Trophy.

With 115 fished being returned this result is testament to the reputation that Lough Owel has earned as an excellent brown trout fishery. The Olives have already made an appearance on Lough Owel and it won’t be too long before the Mayfly also begins to show. Lough Owel is well worth a visit and anglers should consider top of the water fishing with dry wulff patterns and possibly klinkhammers.

Very Successful FAW Day 2 Event for Boyne Sea Angling Club

Lots of Quality Flounder Today at Port Beach

Day 2 of the Fisheries Awareness Week events in the Drogheda area took place today Sunday 12th May at Port Beach, Clogherhead, Co Louth. Peter Cunningham and ten members of his team at the Boyne Sea Angling Club provided expert tuition on how to target species such as flounder, dabs, plaice and bass and showed everyone how they can enjoy and experience the sport of sea angling. After years of angler free beaches it was great to see Port Beach filled with anglers, tripods and beach casting rods and most importantly lots of spectators wanting to get involved in the sport of sea angling. Between 35 and forty adults and children took part in the Fisheries Awareness Week event and people travelled from Drogheda, Dundalk, Malahide and Northern Ireland. There were lots of fish caught and species included bass, flounder, plaice and dabs and even a few sea trout were caught. All fish were returned unharmed to the water. Those attending the event were shown how to set up their tackle, how to tie on rigs and traces and how to cast. Both bait fishing and spinning techniques were demonstrated and tips were provided on both methods of fishing. In addition to the practical fishing information on offer, advice was provided on how to stay safe while fishing with particular reference to tidal and weather conditions. Today’s event took place from 10am to 1pm at Port Beach in Clogherhead, Co Louth but many people stayed on after the event had officially finished. The club was also recruiting new members on the day and a number of people availed of this great opportunity to get involved in sea angling with a great club. Another event is planned for next week Sunday 19th May from 2pm to 5pm at the same location and it too is suitable for beginners, novices and improvers alike. All are welcome to join in. See you there!

To take part in next weeks event please contact: Peter Cunningham at 087 2169726 or by email at boyneanglingcentre@gmail.com  or drop into Peter in the Boyne Angling Cebtre in Drogheda. Further details and information on this and other Fisheries Awareness Week events is available at  the Fisheries Awareness Week website at www.faw.ie

A Group of Young Anglers Attending Today's Event on the Boyne Canal

Drogheda Coarse Angling Club kicked off Fisheries Awareness Week 2013 today in the Drogheda area with an introduction to coarse angling on the Boyne Canal at Oldbridge. Between 25 and 30 adults and youths turned out to learn all about the coarse angling techniques and included demonstrations of pole, waggler and feeder fishing. Groups attending the event were rotated between demonstrators Mark Carolan, Shane O’Reilly and Mark Heffernan who each gave in depth explanations on one of each of the fishing technques. Then there was a chance for the children to have a go and there were quite a few natural anglers who will have very promising fishing careers if they stick with the sport. Fishing conditions were very difficult on the day with strong gusty winds and very cold with squally showers of rain and hail. Some great prizes were awarded and two poles, tackles boxes and a number of caps were awarded at the event. It is hoped that the fish will be more obliging at the second event which is scheduled for next Saturday 18th May when participants will again have a chance to pit their wits and newly learned skills against the wily fish of the Boyne Canal.

Mark Carolan of Drogheda Coarse Angling Club thanked everyone for attending the event and sponsors Peter Cunningham of Boyne Angling Centre and Inland Fisheries Ireland.

Fat as a pig and beautifully marked pike for the flying visitor

Azim from Paris with his fat 15lb Pike from Lough Derg
Azim from Paris with his fat 15lb Pike from Lough Derg

Richie Johnston of Guide fishing Ireland had a French angler over with him on a quick trip to Ireland.  Richie reports:

Last week I was guiding for a client in for a flying visit. Azim was in Paris on business, and came over to Dublin for one day only, and wanted to try his luck with fly fishing for Pike on Lough Derg. Last season he had fished for trout and we had some great sport with dry flies during the summer. I had told him about the Pike in the lough and he fancied one on the fly.

So armed with a floating line we started with the shallow bays, hoping they might hold a few fish after spawning. A few fish showed some interest, but turned away each time. We moved into some deeper water on the edge of some  thick reed-beds. Azim was keen to try some new Pike flies I got from my friend Ad Swier in Holland. These are really big, and after 2 or 3 casts a fish eventually hit the stripped fly. After a short but acrobatic fight Azim had his first Irish fly caught Pike, a fish of about 6 lb.

Although we tried several  other areas, no more fish came to the fly. With an hour to go, Azim asked was there a plan b? Yes there was, float trolling dead baits off the deep shelves. Within half an hour, Azim had 2 takes and 2 doubles were landed. One of  about 10 lb and another fish of just over 15 lb. This fish was as fat as a pig and beautifully  marked. We were off the lough by 6pm and Azim was back in the air by 10.

Donegal Sea angling looking good with the return of the Mackeral

Some nice pollack on the Prospector 1
Some nice pollack on the Prospector 1

Seán Carty from Carty’s Land and Sea Sports in Bundoran reports on the sea angling around Donegal:

On the sea this week the big story is what a lot of folk have been waiting to hear , that is the mackeral have returned . Reports this week from the Prospector 1 at Mullaghmore and the Bundoran star are of plenty of mackeral , and good ones at that . Some of the shoals are surprizingly close to the shore for the time of year and we will be hoping that larger predators such as tope will be close behind . Both charter boats are also reporting good pollock  and bollan wrasse and an odd cod as well and the prospector also had plenty of herring onboard on Saturday  .

On the shore front it has been another good week . We had great reports from anglers on Mermaids cove and Tullan strand of great flounder , turbot and trout fishing this week with again some notable catches of trout over 2.5lb and flounder over 40cm . Killybegs Mariners club had a comp on Inver this week and there was some good fishing had with plenty of flounder and some anglers taking in two or even three at a time . Species caught on the night were flounder , seatrout and an unusual 15 spined stickleback . The winner on the night was Gavin Dorrian and the longest Flattie going joint to Gavin Dorrian and Liam Kearney . On Saturday Zoltan Kizsely had a 4 hour session at a mark on the northern side of Donegal bay and enjoyed some great fishing with plenty of Dabs and flounder . The Killybegs Mariners club will be hosting their open comp on the 19th of may at Narin strand at Portnoo from 10.30 till 3pm . Entry on the day will be E15 for adults and E5 for juniors and all money will be handed out on the day in prizes .

4 landed and 4 lost on the Enniscorthy anglers stretch

Slaney River Report:

May 6th :With the guage at about 13″ the mid and upper river has gone a bit quiet with no more than 3 fish being reported off any of those beats for the week. For many 13″  is still reasonable May water although some areas are suffering from heavy weed growth. The encouraging fact is that 4 fish were landed and 4 more lost on the Enniscorthy anglers stretch who also report seeing fish on the move suggesting that there is still a run of fish coming in.  A bit of fresh water might well liven up the river up.

May 7th:The Atlantic Salmon Federation have released a very good video on catch and release which can been seen here. Closer to home the Irish Angler’s digest has a very interesting article by Edward Fahy on the two, widely quoted studies of the effect of sea lice on smolt mortality.

Italian anglers delighted with Cavan pike

Gerry Olin at Esox lodge in Belturbet had some Italian anglers with him during the week and our Irish pike were very obliging.  Gerry said they caught over 18 very nice pike and although the weather is changing in the latter part of the week it shouldn’t affect the fishing.

Earlier in the week some Belgium anglers also visited Esox Lodge.

Gerry also shared a couple of his older photos with us:

Na.....you haven't changed a bit Gerry..........honest!
