Tope and ray make up for windy weather in Clare

This summer has had one almost constant feature – wind, and plenty of it! It seems the jetstream has remained firmly fixed over our heads, bringing a steady airflow with it at sea level and making for difficult fishing conditions. Luckily for Carrigaholt Sea Angling the Shannon Estuary provides shelter from all but the worst winds and keeps guests fishing and happy. This past week it saw plenty of action.

Anglers aboard did get one brief break from the wind when it pulled a little to the north west so they were able to fish to Horse Island. Mackerel were still scarce but they got a few and then anchored up. A steady supply of doggies and the excitement of this tope (and sunshine) was nice, according to skipper Luke Aston.

Mackerel have been scarce, and some days the estuary just produced a few thornback ray and bull huss.

Another briuef weather window saw them get out west for a morning, with plenty of pollack around, and a few more mackerel too. There was still a big swell running, so they moved into the estuary for the afternoon and had some nice tope to close to 40lbs.

And although confined to the estuary again the following day, they did at least enjoy some sunshine, and a few nice thornback ray to go with it.

Fish, fun and fine food at Galway Bay family outing

Mini species are a great way to introduce kids to sea fishing, and that’s what Galway Bay SAC did on their recent family outing in Rossaveal. Mini species are a range of small species, or juveniles of larger species, that proliferate around rocks and piers and can be easily caught on light tackle. Their ease of capture is great for keeping kids interested – we all know how short their attention span can be!

Tom Keal, PRO with the club, reports:

What an incredible day at our Annual Club BBQ in Rossaveel, Connemara! The aim was to target mini species, and we certainly delivered. With junior and senior anglers participating in our species hunt competition, we managed to catch and submit a total of 7 different species!
The species that were caught were Corkwing Wrasse, Ballan Wrasse, Goldsinny Wrasse, Poor Cod, Pollack, Black Goby and Coalie.

A massive shoutout to Chris Hartnett for the delicious slow-cooked grilled venison, only the best here at Galway Bay! You just had to be there! Of course, the hotdogs were a hit too!

And we can’t forget the fresh prawns, courtesy of a local trawlerman who kindly traded a lift to the shop with Brian Reidy for a load of prawns—they were absolutely perfect on the grill!
We also had some great conversations about upcoming competitions and future club activities. Overall, it was a fantastic day with excellent company, tasty food, and plenty of fish!
Thanks to everyone who made it possible. Looking forward to next year’s BBQ!

Family fun charter fishing in Clare

Although the weather has been difficult lately, Sean Maguire, who skippers the Isle of Aran charter boat in west Clare, can usually find sheltered fishing in the Shannon Estuary for his guests. Last weekend he had a family group from Dungarvan, then another regular group from Dublin/Belfast. Enjoying the somewhat calmer waters inside Loop Head, they enjoyed great fishing, with a range of species caught, and plenty of smiles all around…

Lots of rain for Currane, Inny anglers saying nothing

22/8/2024 No reports from the lake or the Inny but going by yesterday’s rainfall of 10.8mm, you can put your wages on the Inny that they had their Inny hats on today, fish or no fish, so I will leave that to your skills and knowledge if you get my drift. Wind moderate WNW veered W, WSW, SW. Yesterday’s weather amount of rainfall as already stated, amount of sunshine 0hrs.2mins, maximum air temperature 17.4°C.

23/8/2024 There was a reasonable flood last night with 20.9mm of rainfall, so you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that my Noble Currane anglers had their Inny hats on today. On lakeside I would say the lake was on the dirty side going by the amount of rainfall. Just for the record The Inny farmer has been on the road. Wind moderate West veered WSW, SW followed by good cloud cover and the odd shower. Yesterday’s weather amount of rainfall as already stated, amount of sunshine 0hrs.1mins, maximum air temperature 17.0°C.

24/8/2024 All the Currane Inny anglers were all quiet this day? Wind fresh Northwest followed by good cloud cover and showers at times. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 3.3mm, amount of sunshine 3hrs.7mins, maximum air temperature 16.5°C.

25/8/2024 All Currane anglers were all quiet in all departments? but you can take it for granted they had their Inny C&R hats on.  Wind fresh WSW veered West followed by good cloud cover and a few heavy showers. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 6.4mm, amount of sunshine 8hrs.4mins, maximum air temperature 16.1°C. Just for the record Kerry is on a yellow rain warning from Monday 3pm to Tuesday 10am. Approx. 29.2mm of rainfall forecasted?

26/8/2024 There were two boats out and no Salmon or C&R Sea Trout caught. In the words of one of the Currane anglers and I quote, “it was rough and wet out there” and just for the record the Bull rock is covered. On the Inny front, you can be sure there were a few Currane anglers who had their C&R Inny hats on. Wind moderate to fresh SW veered SSW, S, SSW. Yesterday’s weather, amount rainfall 2.8mm, amount of sunshine 3hrs.0mins, maximum air temperature 17.4C.

27/8/2024 No reports from the lake which isn’t surprising because there was another good amount of rain with 13.2mm of rainfall, as I always say you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know they had their C&R hats on, you could say their reels were loud, but their Catch and Releases are classified information? Wind moderate WSW veered SW, SSW, SW, SSW, SW, followed by good cloud cover and heavy showers at times. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall as all ready stated amount of sunshine 0hrs.3mins, maximum air temperature 16.8°C.

Sea Trout – Catch and release only

Inland Fisheries Ireland wishes to remind anglers that the Conservation of Sea Trout (No.7 or Kerry District) Waterville Area Bye-Law No. 971 of 2019 remains in effect. This Bye-law prohibits the retention and possession of any sea trout (Salmo trutta L.) taken by any fishing engine or by rod and line in the Waterville area i.e. that part of the sea eastward of a line drawn from the most westerly point of Bolus Head to the most westerly point of Lamb’s Head and to all the waters discharging in to it.

The Bye-Law mainly affects seatrout fishing on :-

  • the river Inny (Knockmoyle) and its tributaries
  • the waters of the Waterville system, including the Waterville River, Lough Currane, the Cummeragh River and all their tributary rivers and lakes
  • the waters of Ballinskelligs Bay

FLEKSI

A new online survey has been developed by IFI for the Currane catchment to gather anglers’ knowledge – the survey method called FLEKSI was developed by IFI to help give an insight into the status of the fishery. Currane Anglers are needed for Citizen Science survey to examine fish stocks

Rare John Dory for Killybegs Fishing Trips

The weather hasn’t been kind to charter boat anglers in Donegal Bay of late. Killybegs Fishing Trips managed just one trip during the past week but were rewarded with a rare catch.

Only managed one trip this weekend, and even that was a tough day out weather wise. However, for this hardy crew, they got some very nice pollack, small ling and some wrasse. But the highlight off the the day was a cracking 52cm john dory! This weekend coming is looking like better weather so let’s hope for better fishing action

River Easkey fishing quite well during recent floods

On the River Easkey Angling Association water anglers enjoyed good fishing during the past week. The heavy rains of late kept water levels up and provided good conditions on this west Sligo spate river.

Most fish ranged between 4 and 7 lbs but some bigger fish into double figures were caught as well.

Amongst the successful anglers was Aaron Spence from Northern Ireland who was fishing together with his father Andy. Aaron caught is first ever salmon which he sportingly released. Not to be outdone, Aaron’s father Andy also caught a fine grilse and lost a much larger fish later in the day.

Nore fishing well as Irish team start European champs – Piscari-Fly update

How’s the Fishing

Testing our New Dry-Fly Rod

Peter was on the Nore during the week testing the new Venator 9ft3 3 weight Dry Fly Rod. It felt lovely in the hand, it is a medium to fast action rod and casts really well. I managed to play a few fish on it as well and over all I am pretty happy with the build. We will contuine to test the rod over the coming weeks and we will let you know how it works out. All going well the rod should be out around Christmas or just after.

The Nore is fishing well at the moment, with a small rise in the water levels over the last couple of days so it’s really come on quite well. Some nice fish being caught on Nymphs and Dries. Soon we will see the end of the evening rise and the dry fly fishing in the mid afternoons should be good action. September can be a good month on the rivers as the trout are beginning to fatten up for the long winter months. They can also shoal up a bit while dropping back from the faster water to the slower glides to reserve fat levels and energy. I find fishing spiders in September on this type of water can be very successful also productive in finding the shoals of trout.

Now this masterclass is on Euro-dinking. So its basically an amalgamation of clink and dink and euronymphing. So basically your dry dropper off your euro set ups .

Now there is a little bit to it, setting up the rigs, your approach to the fish and the technique all takes a bit of practice. But it is a very effective way to fish. Peter has been doing a fair bit of work on it over the last season and over in the Czech Republic with David Chlumský from Team Czech. He was working on it with us when we were there coaching the Irish Youth team last month. The masterclass is up there now; in episode 1, we go through the tying of the flies that work best for this style of fishing. Then, in the second part, we are on the river going through in detail the set ups and the approach to the fish. For the final segment we will be out on the water putting it all to the test and getting some fish.

Flies of the Week

Here we have the most productive flys from this week on the river. the CDC and Deer Hair Sedge is a cracker and I have a furled tag in there. Also the nymphs are simple and super effective for this time of the year.

International Competitions

Today the European Fips-Mouche Flyfishing Championship starts. Team Ireland comprises Dave Donovan (Captian), Kevin Lafford, Alan Lawless, Mark Sloan, Andrew Sloan and the reserve is Jano Knazko. The competition takes place in Poland on River San. it will be on for the next 5 days and the lads will be fishing 4 river sessions and one drifting boat session. One of the river sessions will also be dry fly only, this is the first time we will see this type of session at a major comp so it will be interesting to see how it fairs out over the 5 sessions. Beginners luck for Belfast Buddies on River Maigue

Paddy Dunworth of Celtic Angling reports from the Maigue:

IFI weekly reports last week mentioned the phenomenon of the northern half of our Island experiencing record rainfall whilst the southeast was experiencing the opposite. You can add the southwest to that. I reckon we’re 9 or 10 weeks without rain of any consequence, fishing or farming rain that is, enough to see river water levels rising in feet rather than inches.

The tail-end of Ernesto plus storm Lilian was windy for the most part and had no impact whatsoever on the Maigue with a barely noticeable and short-lived 4″ on the Deel. Bookings have to be met regardless of adverse conditions and Belfast buddies Paddy McCulloch, Brendan Colgan and John O’Connor made the 4 hour+ trip to Adare. Staying within Adare Manor they had only to cross the road for our Saturday midday post-tide session.

Brendan and Paddy had some fly-fishing experience whilst John had none at all, not ideal with a 30km wind whipping upriver and bringing cold showers also. After a brief introduction Paddy and Brendan were able to move downriver, allowing me to give John a crash-course in fly-fishing, page 1 of a very long book.

The ebbing water of a spring tide will last longer as it fills the river more and fishing would have been impossible without this with weeds either on or barely under the surface at low water level. John was casting a reasonable line after an hour or so and I left him to fish at the run just below Adare bridge and waded downriver to see how Paddy and Brendan were faring, leaving instructions on how to take a photo with his phone if he caught anything.

My thinking was, given the atrocious conditions it would be one of the other two improvers who would meet a fish, if at all. And although they both had lots of hits, some probably from playful Roach, it was the rookie John who had hooked, netted, photographed and safely released a trout by the time I got back, beginner’s luck strikes again!

Young anglers learn the ropes with Wicklow Boat Charters

Kit Dunne of Wicklow Boat Charters was helping the next generation of anglers find their sea legs recently. The Wicklow Bay SAC has been running a series of youth coaching sessions, and they held the final one on Kit’s boat. 12 young anglers fished hard on a bad day, but were rewarded for their perseverance by some nice catches including mackerel, ballan wrasse, pollock, bass, codling, whiting and dogs. Well done to all the young anglers, and we hope to hear more about your catches over the coming years 👏👏👏👏

Earlier in the week, Kit was back on the tope trail, and he managed to hook up the Nolan brothers with a few fine tope, best weighing in at circa 44lb.
