Lough Owel and Lough Ennell reports by Dermot Broughan:

For the third week in a row it has been a very difficulty week for angling.  Very heavy rain during the week has seen a lot of fresh water enter our lakes, water levels apart from Owel have recovered to near winter levels and fish have been slow to give themselves up.

Lough Ennell:

Returns have been very slow on the lake due in part to the heavy rain and raising water levels.  On patrols on Tuesday evening and Wednesday evening no anglers were seen on the water.

Fishing has been good on Owel during the week.  In all 81 fish were boated with 45 returned to the water.  The best results for the week were Mick Francis and Liam Cox who boated 12 fish.  The best was a wild 1¾ fish which was one of 8 fish returned.  Paul Costello on Tuesday evening had 1 fish on the fly to 2½.

Little and Big Brosna flooded but some lively fishing in Pallas Lake

Martin Moffitt reports from Lough Derg and Brosna Areas:

Like most of the country the Big Brosna and Little Brosna catchments were flooded out last week and there was very little fishing here.

Anglers turned to Pallas Lake where they had lively fishing in spite of heavy rain and wind.

Local angler Bill Rock had two nice fish in the 2 lb region and his 2buddy” |Harry Fairclough from the UK had four nice rainbows around the 1.5 lbs mark.

Pat Dunne from Tullamore fished in difficult conditions and managed four fish to 2 lbs and Billy Hanly, another local, had three fish to 2.5 lbs.

During the week an excellent young fly angler Gerard Hayes from Cloghan had two fish to 1.5 lbs.

Anglers in the Brosna areas are hoping that this week will see water levels return to normal

Ken O’Neill reports on Clare’s Rivers and Lakes:

West Clare Rivers and Lakes

Rivers are producing some nice trout at the moment, with many sea-trout (less than 40cm) being caught.  Kilkee Reservoir is fishing well also at the moment with stocked trout as is Knockerra Lake near Killimer.

14 Trout were caught on a Newmarket-on-Fergus Lake during the week.  Students from Youthreach, O’Connell Avenue, Limerick enjoyed a day’s fishing at the scenic Rathlahinne Trout Angling Centre just outside Newmarket on Fergus last week, It was a nice overcast day and the trout were certainly biting, with all anglers landing at least one trout.

Quin River has good water at the moment for Trout.  Trout sizes range from ½ to 1lb fish on the fly.

Fergus River

The Fergus is in flood at the moment.   Some nice trout were caught during the rising flood in Ennis.  All trout anglers on the Fergus are requested to pay heed to their hook sizes in order to reduce the risk of accidently catching and killing Salmon at this time when there is a run on.

East Clare Rivers and lakes

Lough Derg

There are plenty of Trout rising but they are hard to catch at the moment.

Mountshannon area

Caenis is landing on water but fishing is poor enough.  This time of year is generally quiet as the mayfly hatch is over and there is a pause in angling on the lake afterwards.  2lb Trout caught on the Lake near Mountshannon trolling.

Sea Angling is picking up in the Clare Area

Ken O’Neill reports from the Clare Area:

Sea Angling is picking up.

Fanore

Shore Sea Angling is hotting up from Fanore to Lehinch.  A Fanore Sea Angling Club competition last Sunday produced nice Pollack, Thornback Ray, Few Dogfish; Three Conger eels – one of which was 7lbs.  Mackerel are very abundant, and in good sizes, at the moment.  A lot of Sprat is being seen around the bays at present.  Fanore SAC will have a Shore Angling competition next Sunday (1st July) from 1pm – 5pm, All anglers are very welcome to participate.

Kilrush  – Doonbeg

One male tope weighing 36lbs was caught during the week.  There was a nice weeks fishing with cod, ling, haddock caught off the Clare Coastline.  When weather deteriorated, the estuary produced a 14lb Bullhuss and a 36lb Tope.

The shore angling was patchy for Bass during the week with the flood-water on the rivers entering the angling coastline.  However, Mullet angling is great, with some dogfish being caught also.

Bass angling is good at Poulnasherry bay at present

Coarse anglers pleased with their catches around Killeshandra

Prosperous Coarse Angling Club held Leinster League qualifier at Rockfield recently using two sections.   Joe Nolan came first with 7.10kg, Graeme Gannon second with 7.9kg and in third place Darren Fairhurst with 4.7kg.  Thirteen anglers took part in this event.

There are plenty of Skimmer Bream and Roach being caught at the bridge at Killykeen, while the Town Lake at Killeshandra is giving good mixed bags up to 40/50lb. of Skimmer Bream, Roach, small Tench up to 3lb.

Glasshouse is producing good Bream while there are good bags of Skimmers and Roach on Dereskit.  Some English anglers fishing the Lower Derries report good mixed bags up to 70lb mainly Skimmers Roach and some good Perch.

THE KING BOYS ON LENE. Last Sunday Henry King and Ten years old Son Jake spent a few hours on Lough Lene. The Boys fancied their chances at catching some pike, and they had a super day. They travelled down from Shankill Co Dublin on Sunday Morning and by Mid day were battling it out with a good double figure pike on Lene. The tally for the days fishing was six pike, and Jake really enjoyed his day. Its going to be a long summer, and the King Boys will be back in Mullingar to check out more of our fantastic lakes and rivers.
