Lough Derg Perch Bonanza 2024 – Team Perch take first place

This report from the organisers of the Lough Derg Perch Bonanza:

The Lough Derg Perch Bonanza 2024 took place on Sunday 11th August. The event was postponed due to high winds on August Bank Holiday weekend, unfortunately some teams couldn’t fish the new date so number of teams was reduced, but we are happy to have the first team event for perch from the boat!

Check-in of the teams went smoothly at 9am. Once the starting time came, all teams scattered across the lake trying to find countable Perch, the longer the better as only the 5 longest perch would count at the end!

The perch did exactly what they know best, acting finicky and moving around a lot, which made it difficult to catch them, but still a good number of fish were caught and released safely, for others can enjoy this sport.

Thanks to FishDonkey app (used in competitions mostly in US and across the world) we managed to get the results in real time and at the end to be able to see the best anglers in the competition.

At 5pm the app was closed for everyone and results were double checked, we could congratulate the winners on the leaderboard!

  • First Place – Team Perch (178cm 5 longest perch)
  • Second Place – Snipe&Troll (169cm 5 longest perch)
  • Third Place – Team Strike (168cm 5 longest perch)
  • Pheasant Flies sponsored prize went to 4th team on the leaderboard – Team Sukre (164cm 5 longest perch)
  • Longest Perch – Team Perch @ 37cm

Big THANK YOU to everyone who took part on first edition, congratulations to top 4 and longest Perch! Good angling skills!!

Now back to reality and getting ready for Perch Master Ireland 2024(league) next Sunday and Lough Ree Predator Challenge first day of September

Special thanks to Pheasant Flies for the prize.

Big thanks to Inland Fisheries Ireland/Fishing in Ireland for continuous support.

Roach save the day for the three Toms from New York

Angling guide Paddy Dunworth of Celtic Angling knows things can be hard going at this time of year, as high summer temperatures and low water conditions combine to make trout fishing particularly difficult, a fact often referred to as the ‘dog days’ in the angling literature. But an angling guide can’t pick and choose his days when clients have travelled halfway around the world to fish with him, and Paddy had three generations of the Casey family (Tom Sr., Tom Jr. and Tom in the middle) of New York out with him for an evening session during the week. While the trout fishing proved sluggish, the roach was more active, and Tom Sr. managed a trout and five roache on the fly, not a bad return for less-than-ideal conditions.

Earlier in the week, Paddy had Chris Rich from Phoenix, Arizona, out with him for a session or two, and the going was even tougher. This time the roach didn’t bale them out and though they saw a few fish rise, they were easily spooked in the thin, clear water and they only managed to winkle out an odd trout.

Shelter of Shannon Estuary a life-saver for local charter boats

The charter skippers based in the south Clare area are lucky to have the relative shelter of the Shannon Estuary on their doorsteps. So, when the wind gets up (and it seems to have been more or less continuously up for the last few weeks), they can get out on the water while many other charter boats have to stay ashore.

Luke Aston of Carrigaholt Sea Angling has been spending a lot of time in the estuary in recent weeks, and this week his anglers grabbed some shelter behind Horse Island, where they were able to drift out over a bit of clean ground and picked up a tope or two.

In a similar vein, anglers fishing with Sean Maguire Fishing Adventures Ireland were able to find some sheltered reefs where pollock proved plentiful enough, and a few other species kept things interesting.

Irish Youths win Gold to claim unprecedented Four-in-a-Row Grand Slam

This report courtesy of the Irish Trout Fly Fishing Association:

Despite torturous temperatures during the Youth International Fly Fishing Championships held in July 2024 on Grafham water in England, the Irish Youth Team was victorious and won the Gold medal. This means that the team has won the ‘Grand Slam’ of fly fishing – an amazing feat that no other Irish fly fishing team has achieved. The first win for the youths was on Lake of Menteith in Scotland in 2019 and that was followed up with wins on Lough Lene in Ireland in 2022 and Clywedog in Wales in 2023.

Sadly, the hot temperatures that the rest of the country welcomed produced a major algae bloom and the resulting green water made the angling even harder. The week began with a presentation by local Grafham Water expert Iain Barr. He stated that the rainbow trout would have gone deep to the cooler, cleaner water because of the bloom and that they’d be hard to encourage out. However, he knew what flies, methods and tactics would be likely to work and he made a presentation of a set of flies to each team member.

Practice days were hard work but all 15 young anglers put their heart and souls into it and that commitment carried on into the match. Temperatures soared to 32°C over the week but the young anglers just put their heads down and pure grit and determination from the Irish ensured that the team had the necessary information which secured the win for them on match day.

Match Day dawned with a nice breeze and even though temperatures were still high, the breeze made for a more comfortable day on the lake.

Julie Gerry, the first female Manager of the Irish Youth Team said.

“The information gathered during practice days gave us a plan and I knew that the young people would stick to it come what may. I was very impressed with our team. They were all completely cool and calm, and quietly confident as they got into the boats and headed out for the day. The rest of us – the management team, parents and guardians could do no more for them and we were on tenterhooks all day. All we could do was wait and hope. It was a long day. Everything was resting on their shoulders and even though they were all aged under 18 years they proved to have very broad shoulders. I am so proud of them.”

As the match ended and the young anglers made their way off the boats, Denis Goulding the Team Coach was able to establish that the Irish team had produced a good catch and most of them had beaten their partner which is always good news.

Despite Ireland having 25 fish, 4 fish ahead of Scotland, the worry was that Scotland’s fish were a good bit bigger. It was obvious that it was going to be close but in the end, it came down to a 2lb difference between Ireland and Scotland.

The teams were kept in suspense until the full results were announced. The cheers were deafening!

Julie Gerry continued

“All of Team Ireland gave 100%. They were a pleasure to work with. Each of the young people was kind and helpful, and the more experienced anglers, helped the new caps fit in. It was a team effort in every way.

I’d like to give thanks to Denis Goulding and Andrew Duncan for their superb coaching and fly tying skills.

A special word of thanks to Kevin (Buzz) Dinning, who took time off work to help us and to the parents and guardians who helped with the boating all week.”

A tremendous amount of work went into ensuring that a well-equipped Irish Youth Team attended the international. It was achieved by the generous sponsorship from NARA, Fulling Mill, Iain Barr, Irish Ferries, Airflo, IFI, and all the ITFFA provinces and affiliated clubs giving so generously to make the experience happen. The ITFAA Youth team is very grateful and sincerely thank all of the sponsors.

Special thanks are due to Assistant Manager Jenny Casey who has been a tower of strength and was always available to help with all aspects of the team preparation.

Planning and fundraising is already underway for The Lake of Menteith in 2025!

08 August: With poor weather keeping us ashore we targeted a few bass yesterday evening, having great craic with soft plastics and getting 11 fish between us.
