Fishery Focus: Costello & Fermoyle

The Costello & Fermoyle fishery in Connemara is one that evokes historic nostalgia mentioned as it was in Kingsmill Moore’s A Man May Fish as a favourite location of his for sea trout.

The fishery comprises the Casla River and a series of lakes, including Glenicmurrin, Fermoyle, Clogher, and the Schoolhouse Loughs, set in beautiful scenery against the backdrop of the Twelve Pins mountains.

Although the numbers of sea trout are not as they once were, the Costello & Fermoyle fishery is still a popular one for anglers chasing salmon and sea trout in historic surroundings and for this week’s fishery focus episode Tom spoke to the fishery manager, Brian Curran, to find out more about the river and loughs in this incredible location.

Tough weather week for Killybegs Fishing Trips

Killybegs Fishing Trips only managed one trip last weekend, and it was tough fishing in tough conditions, but fair play to the crew, they managed to catch some fine pollock and some smaller ling.

14/8/2024. Three boats out on Lough Currane and just the odd Brown Trout caught on the fly, just for the record there was nothing caught on the troll, so we will head across the Valley to the C&R report from the River Inny Farmer.

Hi Vince, just a Couple of fish on the fly and 1 Salmon caught spinning up high.

Wind moderate South veered SSW and overcast all day and humid. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 1.7mm, amount of sunshine 9hrs.0mins, maximum air temperature 17.2c.

15/8/2024. Firstly, we head out onto the lake and reel in today’s facts, 1 boat had 5 C&R juniors and 1 trout in the 2lb class and followed by a good few brownies. Currane fly angler while fishing on the drift caught a fine Salmon, sadly lost a bigger fish shortly afterwards. Now we head for the C&R River Inny farmer and his report.

Hi Vince, there was a big flood this morning, the late starters, produced the goods at least 2 Salmon on spin and 2 Salmon on fly.

Wind fresh to moderate WSW veered NW, NNW, NW, overcast first thing this morning but come the afternoon the sun broke through followed by reasonable cloud cover at times. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 2.7mm, amount of sunshine 0hrs.7mins, maximum air temperature 17.5c. Just for the record I will have the amount of rainfall on today’s flood in tomorrow’s notes.

16/8/2024. We head straight out onto Lough Currane, just the odd Brown trout caught on the drift to report. Now the Inny Farmer takes to the stage with his report.

Hi Vince, just one Salmon to report and believe it or not he lost it, I can tell you he was one unhappy angler, I said to him, so what it’s all catch and release anyway, he replied that’s not the point, all I can say Vince there’s no pleasing you anglers.

Wind moderate WSW and overcast. Yesterday’s weather amount of rainfall 6.9mm, amount of sunshine 5hrs.1mins, maximum air temperature 17.4c.

17/8/2024. We start with a back date from the Inny farmer.

Hi Vince, sorry for the delay for this update, I say this because I did report the fish but not the weight of the C&R fish, I can tell you it was in the 15 lbs class and caught and released during the week.

Now back to today’s action on Lough Currane, there were 9 boats out and just the odd Trout caught for their efforts. No reports from the Inny farmer as of yet. Wind moderate West veered WSW, W. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 0.3mm, amount of sunshine 0hrs.1mins, maximum air temperature 17.5c.

18/8/2024. We start with an update in yesterday’s report, just for the record one boat caught 4 C&R Sea Trout up to 3 lbs on the fly. Now to today’s report. All I can say is that the Currane anglers were all quiet, in the words of one Currane angler and I quote, no news, but don’t be surprised if there is a late update? Now to the Currane anglers weather, wind gentle to moderate WNW veered W, WSW, followed by reasonable cloud cover. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 0.5mm, amount of sunshine 0hrs.5mins, maximum air temperature 17.3c.

19/8/2024. The Currane anglers were all quiet this day, but to be fair it was wild out there this morning with strong gusts up to 78km/h, wind South veered SSW, SW, W, average wind speed was between 30km and 40km, So one can say it was fairly rough out there, mind you that doesn’t mean there weren’t manipulating their skills, they could have had there C&R Inny hats on because there was a nice bit of rain, it may have been a few mm’s but I will give you the amount of rainfall in tomorrow’s notes. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 0.1mm, amount of sunshine 3hrs.6mins, maximum air temperature 17.7°c.

20/8/2024. Straight to the action on the Commeragh River and you can say it was a case of the early birds that caught their worms, it didn’t take long before they caught a number of Salmon and Sea Trout, staying on the Commeragh there were two Salmon caught yesterday. Now we head down stream to Lough Currane and it was rough out there, one boat did venture out but as the wind increased, they came in early. Now we cut across the Valley to the C&R Inny farmers report.

Hi Vince, just two Salmon caught on the fly today.

Wind WNW fresh to strong, followed by reasonable cloud cover and heavy showers at times. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 16.5mm, amount of sunshine 1hrs.3mins, maximum air temperature 18.1°c.

21/8/2024. No reports from the lake and that’s not surprising because there was still a nice little flow coming down the Inny and just for the record the Inny farmer did report of one C&R Salmon caught on the fly. Wind fresh WSW veered SW, SSW, gusts up to 69km/h. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 4.2mm, amount of sunshine 7hrs.5mins, maximum air temperature 16.4°c.

Sea Trout – Catch and release only

Inland Fisheries Ireland wishes to remind anglers that the Conservation of Sea Trout (No.7 or Kerry District) Waterville Area Bye-Law No. 971 of 2019 remains in effect. This Bye-law prohibits the retention and possession of any sea trout (Salmo trutta L.) taken by any fishing engine or by rod and line in the Waterville area i.e. that part of the sea eastward of a line drawn from the most westerly point of Bolus Head to the most westerly point of Lamb’s Head and to all the waters discharging in to it.

The Bye-Law mainly affects seatrout fishing on :-

the river Inny (Knockmoyle) and its tributaries
the waters of the Waterville system, including the Waterville River, Lough Currane, the Cummeragh River and all their tributary rivers and lakes
the waters of Ballinskelligs Bay

FLEKSI

A new online survey has been developed by IFI for the Currane catchment to gather anglers’ knowledge – the survey method called FLEKSI was developed by IFI to help give an insight into the status of the fishery. Currane Anglers are needed for Citizen Science survey to examine fish stocks

Winds make for tough fishing in Clare, but estuary comes good when needed

Carrigaholt Sea Angling have spent a lot of time hiding in the estuary lately, and this week wasn’t much different. Thankfully, there have been plenty of fish hiding in the estuary too and skipper Luke always knows how to find them…

Saturday 17th was the last day for one crew and the forecast gave Luke some hope, so he pushed out to try shark drift. But conditions where far from perfect and he had to head SW from Loop Head so that when the wind (that was already fresh) got stronger it would be with the boat heading home. As it was, they got 4 hours of a drift and plenty fish off the bottom, but no shark. A short stop on the way home saw a few bonus rays and a couple of Tope landed.

On Sunday Luke took advantage of the good conditions to get well out west. There were lots of small pollack on the ground, all of which were returned, but the crew also got some fine keepers.

It blew up a howler on Monday and even in the estuary the fishing was very bad. There was no sign of sunshine but the moody sky and different lights were still impressive.

There were only a few fish caught, with one decent bull huss being the pick of the day. One good thing was the amount of mackerel in the estuary – they seem very plentiful at the moment.

Tuesday was a slightly better day, but the fishing was still tough, with some ray and tope caught. Wednesday was another bad day in terms of conditions, and the mackerel that had been plentiful lately were hard to come by. Luke decided to head for home to raid the bait freezer, and when he returned, one of the anglers had caught this…..

It was quite a breezy start to the day’s fishing for Fishing Adventures Ireland out of Kilbaha, County Clare, but conditions eased and fishing improved as the day went on.

The boys on board wanted species on the day and they had a good selection, including ling, gurnard, pollack, pouting and more. An added bonus were some nice fresh mackerel on the way back to the harbour.

Cobh SAC reports on the Munster Closed Boat competition held on Sunday…

Twenty-seven Anglers competed in the competition and which was fished outside of Cork Harbour in favourable weather. The anglers fished from 4 charter boats, Camden Mist ,Cuan Ban, Osprey and Deora De.

There was a good quality of fish recorded by the anglers that included Conger, Bull Huss, Ling, Spurdog, Dogfish, Wrasse, Gurnard, Pollack, Coalfish, Pouting, Poor Cod and Black Bream.

Results

1st Place and Gold Medal winner was Tom Johnson Carrigaline S.A.C.
2nd and Silver Medal Paul O Callaghan Carrigaline S.A.C.
3rd and Bronze Medal Cormac Gannon Crosshaven S.A.C.
4th Mark Greenwood Cobh S.A.C.
5th Dan Lynch Crosshaven S.A.C.
6th Pat Condon Carrigaline S.A.C.

The top 5 anglers will represent Munster in the Interprovincial Boat Championship 2025 with the winner as team captain.

Tom Johnson won the Frankie Cronin Shield that was presented by the Cronin Family in his memory. Frankie would have been proud to see Tom the first winner with 9 nine conger to become the Conger King.

The under 21 section was won by Sarah Lynch Crosshaven S.A.C she will be representing Team Ireland in the under 21 World Boat next week in Donegal. We wish her every success.

The team event was won by Carrigaline A; Tom Johnson, Paul O Callaghan, Bob Creber, Stephen Hurley and Brendan O Dwyer.

On behalf of Cobh S.A.C we would like to thank all the anglers that competed, the boat skippers, and also the Munster Provincial Council and Halfway Angling for the kind sponsorship of the prizes. All this helped towards the success of the competition.

Fiona Ryan wins WCAD competition at Caliso Bay

West Cork and District SAC fished their latest competition in Caliso Bay on Sunday…

Our latest club match of the season was in Caliso bay. Weather conditions were on our side for a change and no back up venue was required. 2pm-6pm was the match time. This venue is a sandy beach with a reef running parallel to it with the odd sandy patch in between the reef.

Lines out at 2pm and not long afterwards most anglers had fish on their match cards.
This continued for the duration of the match. There was no clear leader for the first few hours of this match but going into the last hour Fiona Ryan, Aidan O Sullivan and Stephen O Donovan had pulled away from the pack.

All three anglers were in the high teens on fish count and it was looking likely one of these three were going to win it.

With about 45 minutes to go Stephen had a nice Ballan Wrasse of 41cm which would eventually go on and win the round fish pool.

Troy Francis was unlucky not to win the pools. Troy lost something substantial and was only left with the head of a Pollock on his hook when he retrieved his trace. The culprit could have possibly been one of the resident Conger.

Line’s up at 6pm and all three leading anglers ended up with 21 fish on their cards no one was sure who won it but when the cards were eventually added up Fiona Ryan got the win.

Well done Fiona this win pushed Fiona up our master angler league table and puts her in with a chance of winning the title at the end of the season. Aidan took second place and Stephen finished third.

3rd-Stephen O Donovan 21 fish – 404pts
4th-Troy Francis 15 fish – 315pts
5th-Mark O Sullivan 16 fish – 298pts

No flat fish were caught so we give the flat fish pools to the second biggest round fish, therefore, Alan O Dowling won the pools with a 30cm Ballan Wrasse. Well done Alan.

Species on the day consisted mostly of Corkwing Wrasse quite a few over the specimen size. Other species that were caught were Ballan Wrasse, Pollock, Coalfish, Shore Rockling, Dogfish and Scorpion fish.
