Irish Angling Update, 25/11/11

This 46cm Wexford flounder (being measured prior to release) wins Catch of the Week for Brian Cooke

The weather in late November has remained generally mild in the past fortnight with some windy and wet conditions and there was a fair bit of angling activity at sea and on inland waters.  Water levels have generally dropped now on the loughs in the Cavan Leitrim area and in the Shannon catchment.

Along the east coast there was plenty of sea angling activity mainly on the shore with many winter beach competitions taking place and good catches of flounders and some codling featuring.  Some mullet were reported from north Dublin but mullet are few in number and virtually gone at this time of year.  There was some bass reported from Wexford but few in number.  Many anglers are turning their attention to big flounder at this time of year in south Wexford and many fish over 2 lb. were recorded.  Well known Dublin angler, Brian Cooke who is pro of the Irish Federation of sea anglers caught a lovely specimen flounder in south Wexford using peeler crab and this is our Catch of the Week.  In west Cork there was some nice bass taken from rock marks in the Beara peninsula on lures.  Some codling were also taken by shore anglers in the area.  Up in red bay in Co. Antrim, a group of local anglers went fishing with charter skipper Hamish Currie and they fished just off the Mull of Kintyre and took some nice Congers, Spurdog and Ling.

On the coarse angling scene, the Erne winter float only league continued on the Roslea lakes in Co. Fermanagh and good catches of Roach were recorded on the day and fishing was generally good for this time of year. The big shoals of roach and hybrids are moving inshore on Lough Ramor near Virginia but anglers are reminded that there is a byelaw banning the use of keepnets.

Young anglers from all parts of Dublin enjoyed themselves at the annual Dublin Angling Initiative Rainbow trout fishing competition which was held recently at the Angling for all Fishery in Aughrim in Co. Wicklow.  Many fish were caught by the big crowd of anglers and prizes were generously donated by fishing tackle wholesaler, Millards of Dublin.   Down in Co. Kildare the good rainbow trout fishing continues at the Curragh Springs Fishery with fish to 12 lb. recorded.  The Cashel Fishery in Derry continues to fish well for rainbows and good catches were reported in the last week.

The good pike fishing continues and a film crew out on Lough Derravarragh enjoyed good action with a team of anglers recording fish up to 18 lb.  Up in Lough Muckno in Castleblayney, a French delegation visiting the town sampled some of the pike fishing on the lough.  In Roscommon, the Irish polish fishing club fishmaniak fished a lough and several big fish were recorded including fish to 109 cm which was estimated at 25 lb.  Blessington Lake is now open to fishing and several good fish were reported including a fine fish of 20 lb. With the mild weather set to continue according to Met Eireann for another week, there are plenty of opportunities for anglers to enjoy the best of Irish Angling,

FISHING ON THE BEARA

Paul Harris reports

The constantly blowing Southerly winds are both a blessing and a curse at the moment. Temperatures are staying nicely in the 12 to 14 Degrees but it is also blowing in some wet weather and preventing us from fishing some of our favourite areas on the stronger gustier days.

Dave Tims and John Horseman were over for a quick visit from the UK with bass being the main target. Their 3 days fishing produced good numbers of fish with 26 bass in total and the split between those caught on lure and bait about 50/50.  Best fish was taken on peeler crab at 5 lbs 11 ozs. They also had a ‘by catch’ of about 20 codling in the 2-4 lb class mainly taken on bait but 4 on lures which shows the healthy numbers there are about at the moment.

On one of the calmer days I went looking for some late season mullet and I was not disappointed with six fish landed from 3 lbs 6 ozs to 4 lbs 12 ozs. All the fish were taken on float fished bread.

Martin Howlin wins Kilmore Open shore angling competition

The Kilmore Open shore angling competition was held on Saturday last 12th November 2011. A total of 28 anglers travelled from Wicklow to Cork to fish the event. The competition was fished over the evening high tide and the weather was mild and good catches of flounder and coalies were recorded. The winner of the competition was Martin Howlin from Wexford with a terrific catch of 23 fish made up of coalies and flounder. Second place went to Alan Mulcahy from Cork with 14 coalies and third place went to Joe Byrne with 13 coalies. Three hook flapper rigs worked well and best baits were crab and lug worm.

In the Courtown area one anglers had a great 7 lb cod and there has been great fishing for small codling and flounders.

J.P. Molloy from Cork won a Leinster league match that was fished over recently around Wicklow.  Circa 60 anglers fished and there were great catches of whiting.  JP won the competition with 25 whiting.  Occasional codling were also taken.

Good Conger, Spurdog and Ling reported from Red Bay in Co. Antrim.

Big Spurdog from Red Bay

Charter skipper Hamish Currie reports:  ” The settled couple of days allowed us to push across the channel into the deep water holes s/w of mull of kintyre in search of some really big fish but after the first hour it was plain to see there was no monsters in this particular hole as over 20 congers came aboard followed by some nice spurs and ling, herring and mackerel can still be caught offshore in the middle of the channel.”

It was the calm after the storm with winds having dropped back from mid week and coloured water conditions. 76 anglers fished the two day event which was held at Tinnebarna on Day 1 and Ballinesker on Day 2. The winner on Day 1 was Dave Roe from Dublin and the winner on Day 2 was Ian Knight from Dublin. The overall winner was Dave Roe from Dublin, with Martin Howlin from Wexford taking second place and Paul Mason from Dublin taking third place. Catches consisted mainly of codling, coalies and flounder. The best fish on Day 1 was a 44 cm codling and a 35 cm flounder on Day 2.  Maddies and lugworm were the best baits.

Good Rainbow Trout fishing reported from the Cashel Fishery.

Cashel Trout Fishery report by Marlene Mc Laughlin

Another weekend of beautiful weather which means anglers are in their element at Cashel.  Tagged trout worth £50 each have been caught quite frequently in the past few weeks which give anglers something to fish for after their bag limit is caught because you never know the throw that will be the lucky one.

Derry’s Paul Ford lost his two trout which could have had money on them.  James O’Neill and Joe Mc Fall released four and one trout respectively which took a dawson’s olive and a black lure.  Dungiven’s Martin Bradley and previous winner of two £50 trout caught and released four which took the black zonker and the black cat’s whisker.  Kevin Burke (Claudy) released three which took the black lure while young lad Shane Irwin (Dungiven) did equally as well on an f-fly and a fritz hooking him three beauties.  Seamus O’Hara banked four which fell to the black fritz but unfortunately his friend Marcus Moore didn’t manage to get any.

Flounders including specimens reported from the Wexford area.

A nice 46cm Wexford flounder for Brian Cooke being measured prior to release

On Thursday 17th November, three anglers recorded some nice flounders on the South Wexford coast, some over 2 lbs in weight. The best of the fish measured over 46cms and was taken on peeler crab. Despite gale force winds, driving rain and coloured water six nice flounders were taken for the session. Crab baits fished on a three hook (2 up and 1 down) flapper rig proved best. A 5oz flat lead held the rigs in position as the tide moved through. Bites dried up just before low water when the session ended.

The mild weather and south easterly winds alongside medium size tides have made conditions suitable for bass fishing in Wexford. While numbers have dwindled since the summer the occasional bass is still being caught. Exceptionally mild conditions have also allowed mullet to remain in the Wicklow estuaries and some are also present in Malahide estuary. Although many of the fish have left for warmer waters anglers were able to target mullet in sheltered areas. Anglers continued to catch flounders with no reports of any specimens however some flounders to 2lbs weight have been caught in the Wexford estuaries. Recently, well known angler Brian Cooke who is Pro of the IFSA caught a fine specimen flounder and this is our CATCH OF THE WEEK.

Good coarse fishing on Lough Ramor reported at Virginia.

At Lough Ramor, coarse fish are starting to gather in numbers in the harbour at Virginia and anglers can expect good catches close in.  A reminder to anglers that there is a bye-law prohibiting keepnets and it will be enforced.

Lovely Pike of 109 cm on a lure for Polish angler from the Fishmaniak club in a lough in the Roscommon area.

The lure that produced the 109cm for Henryk Walkowiak

A fantastic 109cm pike was taken recently by Henryk Walkowiak who is a member of the Polish Fishing Club “Fishmaniak”. The fish was taken on a 10cm lure in a lake close to Roscommon. The pike took the lure at 5.5 m. Henryk was trying to raise him from the bottom but he had to be careful he was fishing for perch with a very light rod and he wasn’t used any traces. So after 20 min a little tired fish decided to show us what size he was. We were amazed because on such delicate gear it was hard to say how big the fish was!! After 30min the fish was tired enough and I was able to pull it close to the boat. After measuring Henryk was shocked because the pike was 109cm(43″) long and about 11kg (25lb) of weight. It was returned back to the water in good condition off course.

East Coast Pike Fishing

With Blessington Lake reopened in November it has fished reasonably well.  Several double fish have been caught and one 20 lb. pike on a popped up deadbait at Valleymount bridge was recorded by a Dublin angler.

Inland Fisheries Ireland organised a pike fishing trip on Lough Muckno on Monday 14th November for a visiting delegation from Marseillan in France in support of a cross border initiative to improve tourism in the area.  This new initiative has been organised by Castleblayney Town Council and Newry and Mourne Council.  Unfortunately, the fishing conditions on Monday were very difficult and no fish were caught during the short outing. However, the group were able to see and experience, the extent and potential of Lough Muckno and the professional guide and ancillary services, including quality boats and tackle hire, available to pike anglers visiting Castleblayney and the north east area.  Guiding services, boats and equipment were provided by Peadar O’Brien and Tom Coagan and the trip was organised and coordinated by David Byrne Inland Fisheries Ireland.

Colm Lynch, reports that pike fishing continues to improve with plenty of reports of good fishing from the region. John Curtis had six fish at the weekend the best being a twelve pounder on around Shercock.  While Dan Prunty and John Baker had a great day on Sunday 13th November on a well know midlands lake with 13 fish being boated on the day using dead bait and lures. The best of these fish was a lovely 17 lb fish caught on a salvage 4play lure.
