Great day at the Angling for all facility for young anglers fishing the annual Dublin Angling Initiative trout angling competition.

Dublin Angling Initiative Annual Fishing Competition

The Annual Dublin Angling Initiative trout fishing competition took place on Thursday 3rd November, at Angling for All facility in Aughrim, County Wicklow.  This competition is one of the many youth angling events organised by the Dublin Angling Initiative. Fifty two teenagers participated from all over Dublin, and this competition is certainly the highlight of the fishing calendar for these youngsters.  The majority of the participants have attended fishing courses run by the Dublin Angling Initiative throughout the summer months and many have been coming for a number of years and are now good anglers.

Competitors fished in teams of four from the following youth projects; Mulhuddart Community Youth Project, Blanchardstown Youth Service, Whitechurch Youth Development Project, Sphere 17 Darndale,  JAY Project, Jobstown, Bradog, Dublin city and Youth Enhancement Whitechurch. This competition is catch and release and after a brilliant day’s fishing where the hard fighting rainbows provided fantastic sport,  more than 40 rainbow trout were caught and safely released.

The winning teams on the day were:
1st place:  Dublin 15 (team 2) – Aaron Thompson, Daniel Connolly and Shane Murray.
2nd Place: Dublin 15 (team 1) – Jay Sinnott, Josh Twomey, Graham Beattie
Whitechurch (team 2)  – Cormac Healy,  Barry Downey, Josh McCarthy
Mulhuddart (team 6)  – Mark McMahon, Steve McMahon, Eric Hughes,  Corey Geoghan
3rd Place:  Jobstown (team 1) – Davie Simpson, Dean Meehan, Corey Dardis

Winners - Des Chew, Daniel Connolly, Aaron Thompson, Shane Murray, Josie Mahon

The prizegiving ceremony took place at the Pavilion, adjacent to the fishery where Des Chew and Darragh Long of Millard Brothers presented the prizes of DAM rods and reels. Every young person  received a prize which will help them to continue with their hobby.

Des Chew, Project Manager of the Dublin Angling Initiative stated:  ‘This competition has been a great success thanks to the ongoing support of Inland Fisheries Ireland, George Kelly of Millard Brothers who donated the prizes for the competition and the staff at the Angling for All facility who sponsored the fishery today. I would also like to praise the fisheries officers of IFI, Derek Evans for his ongoing support to the competition and to the young people themselves who are great advocates for the sport of angling and represent the future for angling in Ireland’.

The competition was organised by Des Chew of the Dublin Angling Initiative. Many thanks to Oisin Cahill, Maurice Carolan, Josie Mahon of Inland Fisheries Ireland Blackrock,  Chris McGregor, DAI and Darragh Long from Millards. Thanks also to the youth workers who brought the young people to the competition and who do tremendous work with them all year round.

Rainbow Trout to 12 lb. reported from the Curragh Springs Fishery.

Curragh Springs Fishery
The mild autumn weather has led to some excellent fishing conditions at Curragh Springs, blustery showers alternating with periods of calm and some fine sunny spells, have kept anglers on their toes. Despite this, the fish were in the top 20 inches of the water for most of the week. The lake continues to fish well with dry flies, such as daddy long legs, cdc and hopper all doing well.
In the breezier colder days, fish were slightly further down and taking small lures such as dancer, cats whisker, viva and various fritz patterns. Buzzers are also doing well although they need to be retrieved.
Sunday 13th provided a good days fishing for our anglers with friends Con Cahill and Andy Boyle [pictured below] from Kilkenny well rewarded with a good days catch on their first visit to Curragh Springs. Martin Cowman from Malahide [pictured below] fished well into the evening and was rewarded with a fine Rainbow. Martin landed and carefully released 15 fish on his visit here on Sunday 13th, his best fish on the day around 12 lb.

Con Cahill shows off one of his trout at Curragh Springs

Andy Boyle had a great first days fishing at Curragh Springs

Curragh Springs is a natural spring fed lake with crystal clear water plus a natural feeder burn. There is an abundance of insect life and an abundance of aquatic life including nymphs, buzzers, fry, minnow, stickleback, beetles, snails, flies, amphibians and terrestrials which encourage the trout to be free rising even on the coldest and dullest of days, giving excellent surface sport.

Martin Cowman had 15 fish for the day with his best fish weighing 12lbs

Why not give Curragh Springs a visit you may get a pleasant surprise, we are open 7 days a week all year round from 9am till dusk.Call Shaun at 087-2462028. Visit our website at www.curraghsprings.com and find directions on our location map

Derravaragh to shine on Failte Ireland tourism video.

Film Crew
Failte Ireland film crew at Derravaragh.

Yes we were blessed with good weather last weekend, and got some nice filming done on Derravaragh for the Failte Ireland Tourism Videos. Local angling expert Pat Keenaghan gave Liza McCann and John Gogarty a guided tour around one of our beautiful lakes here in Westmeath. We even managed to capture a few good pike on film, and the best fish was up on 18lbs.It was not all plain sailing, and the pike were difficult to catch. Visiting anglers Joe O, Brien and Stephen Butler got it hard to get a handle on the Derravaragh pike, but are planning a return trip soon to sort this out. The lads are from the Kill, and Kilmeaden area of Waterford. Stephen was interviewed by Liza and had a few great fishy tales to tell her. I will be keeping in touch with Liza and John, and hopefully get them back early March for the start of the trout season. We have a lot to offer here in the Midlands when it comes to Tourism Angling, and it’s about time it was tapped into.

Check in at Donore Shore at 11am, and fishing till 4pm.Weather permitting it will be a cracking day out for all the family. All going well Marty Smith from Macklesfield near Manchester will be over, and we will get him stuck into a good pike on Derravaragh.

Irish Angling Update – 10/11/11

Thomas wins Catch of the Week with his 109 cm 22 lb 7 oz pike
Thomas wins Catch of the Week with his 109 cm 22 lb 7 oz pike

The weather in the past fortnight has had a mixture of heavy rain, very low temperatures and some warm days for anglers trying to catch fish in somewhat difficult conditions.  At this time of year many inland anglers turn their attention to pike in particular and although water heights are extremely high there was some fine fishing reported from the Cavan Monaghan Lakeland area.

There were reports of many fine pike over a metre i.e. 20 lb. and for one French visitor in particular, Thomas Lechat a 16 year old student from the South of France fishing with angling guide, Pat McLoughlin. Thomas had 49 pike for his week and his best 3 fish were 103 cm (19 lb 12 oz) 105 cm (20 lb 3 oz) and 109 cm (22 lb 7oz).  His biggest fish earns Thomas the catch of the week.  Angling guide Peadar O’ Brien had some clients out in lakes in the Carrickmacross area and they enjoyed excellent fishing with recording pike to over 20 lb. There was some excellent pike fishing for Dutch anglers fishing with Kevin Lyons over in Longford in the small lakes and they too took pike up to 20 lb. on mainly lures. Elsewhere there was some pike recorded in a competition on Lough Ree and Michael Flanagan is very impressed at Lough Glore as a venue for Pike fly fishing.

There has been a fair bit of angling on some of the Rainbow lakes which are open over the winter and some nice fish were reported from the Cashel Fishery in Derry and in the Curragh Springs Fishery in Co Kildare.

The high water levels have hampered coarse angling on many venues at present but there were reports of good roach fishing on the Boyle River (Canal) where an Irish team qualifier took place.  Up in Fermanagh, the winter league is going well with good roach fishing for the competitors fishing on the Roslea Lakes.

At sea, the Cobh SAC hosted the IFSA Boat Fish-Offs over the October bank holiday in somewhat difficult weather conditions.  Conditions on the Sunday were better and several competitors recorded over a hundred fish each on the day.  Dabs were also plentiful with many touching specimen size.  Other fish recorded included dogfish, codling, pouting, poor cod, and plaice.  By competition’s end over 2000 fish had been recorded.  Up in red bay in Co. Antrim, anglers fishing with Hamish Currie had good sport with a range of species including some good congers and several small skate.  Down in the beara peninsula in west cork parties of English and Irish anglers had very good shore fishing mainly off rock marks catching some lovely pollack among a range of species.

Big congers and small skate on Predator II

A few settled days allowed me to shift across the channel into the deep water holes hunting specimens. We caught all the usual suspects and though the skate were very small it was nice to see some young ones. The Carrick Fergus boys again faired the best trip of a 4 day session with some nice congers, spurs and a few small skate. The inshore angling is almost over now and we will start to travel greater distances in the hunt for the monster.

Very good Pike fishing reported from the Cavan Monaghan lakelands area.

Thomas wins Catch of the Week with his 109 cm 22 lb 7 oz pike

Following the recent heavy rain, water levels remain high in many of the lakes in the north east and Cavan and Monaghan in particular. Despite the adverse weather and water conditions pike anglers have been having success in the north east.

Angling guide Pat McLoughlin also reports that Benoit Sachet fished over this past week in the Cavan/Monaghan area week and ended up with 50 pike. His best was 102 cm, but he had a lot of 90 cm+ fish.

Also visiting and fishing with angling guide Pat McLoughlin was Thomas Lechat a 16 year old student from the South of France.  Thomas had 49 pike for his week. His best 3 fish were 103 cm (19 lb 12 oz)105 cm (20 lb 3 oz) and 109cm (22 lb 7 oz).

Over the past 3 weeks Pat and his clients had 143 pike on 5 lakes in the Cavan / Monaghan area. 7 of the fish were over 1m.

Angling guide Peadar O’Brien has been fishing with a number of overseas clients during then past week and had 20 pike on one outing. Peadar reports that he fished with Jean Feinte from France around the Carrickmacross area last week. Even though the weather was wet and windy the water high we still had great results with over 34 fish over a few days. The biggest fish weighed over 19 lb whilst others were in the 8-12 lb bracket, which was good fishing. Peadar said that most of the fish were caught on lures but some were also taken on dead baits.

Angling guide Peadar O’Brien also fished over the weekend and reports that the changeable conditions have slowed things down temporarily. A few severe frosts over the weekend have put the pike off a bit but Peadar advises that they will become more active once they have become acclimatised to the new conditions. Peadar had 2 medium sized pike to the boat on Sunday in the Cavan area. Both fish were taken on lures and the best period of activity was again in the late afternoon.

Lough Glore an ideal pike fly fishing venue

Come pike fly with me is the Glore Motto for the winter months. Yes the Glore Anglers have hosted some pike fly-fishing competitions, and the members are really hooked on this up and coming sport. Pike are a fantastic sporting fish, and really fight hard on fly gear. Its a great way to fish for pike, and Glore is ideal as it is quite shallow where the Glore river enters, and get deep as you drift down the Lake. Glore members Ray Masterson and Luke Walpole recently featured in the prizes sponsored by East Coast Angling.

The club members are very active on the competition scene, and also are doing on going work on facilities for anglers on Glore. They have splendid cooking facilities, and really know how to enjoy their days fishing. Interested in fining out more on Glore contact club Chairman Eddie O, Donnell on 087-7761970.

The anglers in Newtowncashel hosted their boat pike competition last Sunday November 6th. It was a glorious day to be out on Ree, and we had lovely clear skies. There was a great turn out on Anglers, and they were all geared up for the days pike fishing. Travelling up was my friend through angling Kevin Foley of Limerick, and his angling pal Mikie Dillion of Inagh Co Clare. The lads got s bit lost after passing Ballymahon, but we eventually got them on the right road for Barley Harbour where the boats were launching. Saying this they had no problem fining the winning pike on Ree that day, and Mikie produced a fine fish of 17lbs 7oz to take Top Rod. It was a case of piped at the post for Mullingar Angler John Daly as John fishing with my brother J.J. boated a fine fish of 16lbs 6oz to take 2nd place. Longford pike Master Joe McDermott latched onto a pike of 14lbs 8oz for 3rd, and J.J. Flanagan was 4th with 13lbs 13oz.J.J. Just ousted local pair Sean and Catherine McArdle, the Father and daughter team are regulars on Ree and boated a pike just over 13lbs.i had another hard day in the Office, and managed just one small pike around 4lbs.Not to worry, my luck will change soon, I hope.

Dry flies, nymphs and wet flies accounting for good Rainbows at the Curragh Springs Fishery

Despite the recent heavy rain and generally unfavourable fishing conditions, Shaun Hegarty reports that Curragh Springs Fishery has been delivering the goods for visitors. Despite the time of year, fish are still rising freely to dry fly and can also be taken on nymphs and wet flies. Regular visitor, Malcolm Fitzell had a number of nice fish to dry fly on Thursday last 3rd November. Also visiting the fishery was Warren McClelland from Carlow who also netted a few nice Curragh Springs rainbows. David Byrne also had a few nice fish to both dry fly and nymph.
