Carlow Coarse Angling Club have once again managed to bring the sport of coarse angling to a wider audience and have gathered a new momentum. The club has previously been described as one of the most active clubs in the country and they have proved this by running workshops for people with disabilities and women interested in the sport. Recently the club have been busy in assisting in developing a six week course for several different interested parties in conjunction with the Angling Council of Ireland the National Coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland (N.C.F.F.I.), Inland Fisheries Ireland and the Carlow and Waterford Sports Partnerships. Groups in attendance were the Carlow branch of the Irish Wheelchair Association, Brain injury Ireland, Women from Waterford & Carlow and disabled anglers from Wexford and Carlow. The workshops have now reached their halfway stage and have been a huge success with plenty of fish being caught and lots of interest being generated in coarse angling.

Pike to 87 cm on the Suck, but mostly flooded

Pike anglers are also finding fishing conditions difficult.  Best Pike from the Suck Valley area was an 87cm by a french angler, who also recorded many fish in the 2-3lb bracket.  An Italian visitor had an 85cm pike and also two smaller fish for one visit to the area.  All were happy with their visits.

Coarse anglers on the Suck flooded out of it

For most part weather and water conditions are far from conducive to angling.  As a result few anglers were observed over the last 10 days on our fisheries.  The mid and lower Suck are particularly affected due to flooding.  With most of the well known course angling haunts inaccessible.  The River Shannon at Lanesborough provided catches to a best of 10lb to the few anglers who visited.

Some good pike recorded at the two day pike competition at Ballinasloe

The Ballinasloe two day pike competition took place on the 24th and 25th of September.

This competition was a heaviest bag competition, much like a fed competition, there was prizes for heaviest fish.

The Carlton Shearwater Hotel was the venue for the draw and the Prize giving.  The first day was fished on a very high River Suck and the second day was fished on the River Shannon at Shannonbridge.

The results were as follows:

1st Sean Markey 13 pike for 46 lbs 12 ozs
2nd Rory McAllorum 10 pike for 32 lbs
3rd Godfrey Donohue 12 pike for 31 lbs 6 ozs

Heaviest fish was caught by Joey Bonnie 15 lbs 12 ozs

the organisers want to thank all of the anglers that turned out to fish, the conditions were very tough, the high water didn’t help, but all that aside it was a very enjoyable weekend, roll on next year.

The dates for next year are the 21st 22nd & 23rd of September 2012

Spinning in higher water levels produces 389 salmon from the River Moy

As the season draws quickly to a close, the River Moy is continuing to provide great sport for many anglers, with locals and international visitor’s alike reporting success. Once again it was the mid and upper fisheries which reported better catch returns, with the weekly total for the system at 389 salmon.

Water levels remained high for much of the week, impacting on angling effort and catch reports from the Moy Fishery. Just two salmon were reported for the week in the Ballina town fisheries, with Jonathan Sykes, England, landing one on the Ridge Pool with a spinner, and Peadar Duffy, Monaghan, also having success on spinner on the Fresh Water beat. The Ballina Salmon Angler’s water produced a lot of fish, particularly on their upper beats, including one of 5 lb. for Colin Rea, N.Ireland.

Mount Falcon also enjoyed a successful week, with many fish caught, the majority of those being released. Byrne’s, Armstrong’s and Gannon’s fisheries also produced their share, as did the Foxford Fishery. Rinanney once again yielded many salmon, and at Cloongee a total of 22 were reported, with the spinner proving very productive. Jonathan Sykes once again had good fortune while spinning, banking and releasing two fish, with Clare Macinnes, England, enjoying similar success. Eric Pondarre, France, Michael Rozychi, Poland, and Jaceh Scawomir Kolaszwski, also Poland, all had good sport while spinning, accounting for one salmon each.

The East Mayo Anglers Association waters’ was suitable for fly fishing for periods over the past week, with many anglers having good sport on the fly. Rene Koenigs, Germany, landed one of 5 lb. to the fly, while Matthais Engles, Germany, had one of 7 lb. to the fly. The fly also yielded good catches for fellow German anglers Domenick Weber and Dietmar Jansen, who both had 10lbs salmon on the E.M.A.A. water.

In addition to Vincent’s report I include the report from www.loughcurrane.com for Sunday 25th September 2011 on possibly the biggest salmon ever recorded on Lough Currane.

“Well, here we are entering the last week of the salmon season, so it is perhaps appropriate that the biggest salmon of the year has been caught, within these last few days, by Bruce Penwarden, a regular visitor to Lough Currane. He was out with his friends Jim Woodhead and Brian Malem, having hired one of ghillie Sylvester Donnelly’s boats for the day.  The massive cock fish, which was caught on a trout fly on the drift was measured at 42 inches long with a girth of 20 inches. It was then returned and we understand that captor spent the best part of an hour making sure the fish was revived enough to swim strongly away.  According to the Sturdy method of calculating weight for length the fish would have been of the order of 28 to 32 lb !! – possibly a little heavier, when it first entered the system. It is certainly the biggest salmon reported from Lough Currane for some years.”

Lough Arrow end of season competition results.

Lough Arrow Fish Preservation Society hosted their end of season competition recently. First place was won by Pat Eyres, with a trout of 3.19lbs, second went to Eddie Harte with his catch of 2.84lbs and Ken Murray claimed third, his catch weighing 2.53lbs.

Unsettled water conditions, yet 24 salmon reported from the Club water on the Owenmore

The system rose and fell several times throughout last week, giving a limited window of opportunity for anglers. Despite this, 24 salmon were recorded for the week on the club waters, with a large proportion of those released. Connor O’Sullivan, Co. Offaly, landed two salmon while Alan Morrow and Jim Clelland of N.Ireland, both had a fish each. Bill Ashton, Ballinrobe released a nice fish of 8lbs, Edward McCarthy, England, also had success with two salmon, one of which was released. Bangor Angling Club will mark the closing of the season with their annual ‘Last Cast’ Charity angling event on Friday 30th, which is a catch and release event. Fishing for the day costs €30, commences at 10am and includes food and entertainment afterwards. For further details please contact Seamus Henry on +353 (0)97 83487.

LAUNE SALMON AND TROUT ANGLERS’ ASSOCIATON WATERS AND BEAT 3

Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers’ Association waters and Beat 3.

As of Monday 26th September water steady and perfect at 2.25 feet on the gauge at Johnston’s and running clear and fishable by all methods especially fly.  Fishing conditions to Friday ‘Closing Day’ should be perfect.

There was a big fishing effort for the week and a lot of fish were caught and met by those who could get out.  Visiting members of the Association from France, Germany and England who have fished for the last few weeks are regularly catching fish some very good ones among them, up to 14lbs on the fly .  Permit Holders are having good fishing also.

Local members who are getting out are also meeting fish on a regular basis.  The best fish reported for the week was from Johnston’s a fish of 22lbs by Michael Wall on flying ‘C’ .  This writer had his first ever fish in Coffey’s on Monday evening a fresh fish of around 10 lbs followed by another similar fish a half hour later.  On Saturday evening 24th I had a sea-liced fish of about 6lbs.  What is noticeable is that the majority of fish being caught are mostly bright fish in good condition.

There were 28 salmon reported for the week.

Beat 3: The fishing on Beat 3 continues to disappoint as I would judge the water level to be perfect but most anglers are blanking there on all methods.

Note to Permit Holders:

Please not there may be a restriction on the sale of permits depending on demand.  Also note that Permit Holders cannot fish Johnston’s after the 15th of September.  You may be asked by any member to show your permit and make sure that you display the appropriate portion of the permit of on the dash of your vehicle.  Also our five Warranted Officers will be patrolling and checking for permits, these officers and indeed the members will be delighted to assist you with advice on tackle and where to fish.
