Report from the Carrick-on-Shannon Angling Festival, County Leitrim

Tony Kearsley celebrates a perfect score of 4
Tony Kearsley, winner of the Carrick on Shannon Festival, celebrates a perfect score of 4

Tony Kersley stamped his name well and truly on the Carrick-on-Shannon Angling Festival honours list by scoring his fourth win on the River Shannon and lakes of County Leitrim.

The 50 year old Irishman from Enniskillen, almost direct from the World Feeder Championship, has fished the five day event eight times with four wins, runner-up three times and suffered a total blow-out on the other occasion. His latest win in a line-up of 66 matchmen from Ireland, Northern Ireland, England and Holland, earned him the first prize of €1,000.

The Carrick festival is the only surviving festival based on points and Tony’s approach is governed entirely on doing what is necessary to win the section and therefore gaining the lowest number of points.  There are five fishing days and each angler counts his best four scores.

Kiltybardan Lough near to Ballinamore was the opener for Kersley and he won with a catch of 7.380k  (16lb) thanks to a mix of 140 roach, skimmer bream and hybrids, using a straight lead and casting into 7m with single red maggot on a size 14 hook.

Tony Kearsley and a catch of coarse fish
Tony won day four with a 21lb catch of hybrids and roach

Next day he moved to the Mudflats stretch of the River Shannon at Carrick and came first with 12.060k (26lb).  For the first two hours he used a straight bomb with catapulted balls of groundbait at about 25m, then for the remaining three hours he worked with a small feeder at the same distance while working through six pints of casters. His catch was 90 per cent roach and the rest hybrids.

Day three meant that Tony was on the shallow Heron’s Shore of Lough Allen. Fishing into nothing more than a metre in gale force winds, he chose a cage feeder because the fish were up in the water and this allowed him to use a 1.3m hook length while catching mostly roach on single caster.  He weighed-in with 7.360k (16lb) and by now had chalked up a perfect total score of three points.

His fourth match took our champion to Lough Scur pump house where (as if he needed it!) drew the end peg at the base of the new access steps. Apart from the last 15 minutes of pole fishing, this match was won with a 9m pole, a quarter gramme rig at half depth in 2m depth, going through three pints of loose fed casters to catch hybrids and roach for 9.880 (21lb).

The fifth and final day took Tony to Holy Island (Barney’s Shore) on Lough Allen. This very shallow flat-calm section of lake performed poorly every day and some pegs didn’t produce a fish in difficult conditions and he finished seventh, which didn’t matter because he already had a perfect score of four points.

Overall Result:

  1. Tony Kersley (Tubertini Enniskillen) 4pts
  2. Nick Harrison (Arvagh) 5pts
  3. Toon Van Osch (Holland) 6pts
  4. John Balcombe (Enniskillen) 6pts
  5. Brian Chatterton (Sheffield) 7pts
  6. Ian Young (Sheffield) 8pts

The festival runner-up was former UK angler Nicky Harrison, now living in Arvagh, County Cavan, who returned a very creditable 5 points.  He tally was D1 Holy Island first; D2 on Kiltybardan second; D3 Shannon Mudflats first and D4 Heron’s Shore first.

Charter fishing on Clare coast makes most of weather windows – Porbeagles taken

Porbeagle shark, Clare
Our secod shark turned out to be a small Porbeagle of 30 to 35lb
Blue shark
This Blue Shark was around the 80lb mark but it fought well above its weight

Weather over the last week was still not 100% but I was able to get out fishing again! I was not fishing every day and the fishing I did was with different groups in for day trips.

I did 2 days where we were just fishing in the estuary and although on the second day the fisherman were not the most experienced we probably had the better days fishing. Not sure if this was because as the seas settled the conditions at the bottom were improving or if it was because of the state of the tide or was it just plain luck!! Any way there were a few Mackerel still up in the estuary above Carrigaholt and with them as bait we caught quite a few Thornback ray to 8lbs and our share of Doggies. There were also a few small Pollack on some rough in the deepest parts.

Porbeagle shark, Clare
Our secod shark turned out to be a small Porbeagle of 30 to 35lb

Then last Saturday I managed to get out for a shark drift. We were not sure if this would go ahead till we went out to have a look but as the lads were happy to just fish the estuary if conditions were not suitable we went ahead and tried. As it turned out conditions, once clear of the land, were not bad although the water temperature had fallen back to 13.5’C. Once in position I set the drift and we had a good run quite quickly. This turned out to be a Blue Shark around the 80lb mark but it gave a fight more normal with a bigger shark. Then we had a second lighter run and when we got the fish to the boat it turned out it was a small Porbeagle Shark of 30 to 35lb. It was great to see one of these about. There is no doubt that the cooler water is cutting the number of shark about but I also wondered if it was because of this that the Blue put up such a fight and that we caught the Porbeagle?

At the moment I have a group in for a few days fishing and today I had my first “normal” days fishing on the reefs west of the Loop in 3 weeks! This was a very good day with lots of fish of all types about and we had fish coming to the boat continually all day. Indeed the fishing was as good as it gets!

Glenamoy River enjoys another successful week

River conditions on the Glenamoy system were great for most of the week due to heavy rainfall. Many anglers took advantage of the spates, resulting in some good sea trout and salmon fishing. Liam Lawler, Co. Dublin, caught 7 sea trout, while Tony Gibbons, Westport, and Trevor Morrow, Ballina, were among those to land salmon. A total of 8 salmon were released for the week.

Irish Angling Update, 22/09/11

15lb 2oz brown trout from Ballynahinch Lake
This 15lb 5oz Brown Trout which was taken by Galway angler, Stephen Cullinane

It has been a very blustery and cool week  but angling around the country was not too badly affected. Although many charter boats were forced to fish in sheltered locations, shore anglers and their freshwater counterparts enjoyed good fishing.  In particular there was a lot of fishing for salmon anglers as most fisheries got a decent fall of rain which brought better sport.

Along the east coast the rivers Fane, Dee and Glyde all produced good late season fishing with a great  fish of 19 lb. recorded on the River Glyde.  The Cork Blackwater has fished well on most beats and on the River Suir there was some big fish taken to 22 lb. on the Kilsheelin beats.  The smaller Cork rivers all produced better fishing and anglers had a bumper week on the River Ilen.  While it was very windy on Lough Currane, there was some excellent fishing for grilse and plenty of small to medium sea trout.  The nearby River Inny also fished well for salmon and there was a great improvement with quality salmon reported from the River Laune. In the west Kylemore, Lough Inagh and Ballynahinch all produced good fishing including a specimen brown trout of 15 lb. 5 oz taken by a salmon angler at Ballynahinch.  This trout is the biggest ever recorded on the fishery and it is our Catch of the Week.  There was good salmon fishing reported on the Delphi system and the nearby River Erriff had a bumper week with excellent fishing on all its beats.  There was better fishing on the Newport River and nearby Burrishoole when conditions allowed.  The upper stretches of the River Moy fished well in the low water conditions while a huge flood on the Ballisodare River made fishing impossible for most of the week.  In Donegal there was some better fishing on River Drowes and there was good fishing on the River Owenea between a few floods in the past week.

The windy conditions had some effect on trout fishing, and the bigger loughs were particularly windswept, but there is still some good fishing to report.  The midland trout loughs all fished well with good hatches of olives reported from Lough Sheelin.  On Lough Owel over 100 anglers ventured out for the National Qualifier and local angler, Paddy Ward won the event with 4 trout for 6 lb. 2 oz.  In the mid west, there was good fishing reported from Lough O Flynn and Acalla.  Trout fishing was quite good on Lough Corrib when conditions allowed.  Similar windy conditions prevailed on Lough Conn and Cullin.  This week we have a report from the TAFI interprovincial River Championships on the Clare River which was won by the Leinster Team.

There was a lot of Coarse angling in the past week with many English visitors over for the annual 28th King of Clubs festival held at a number of venues near Arvagh in Co. Cavan.  Kevin Rowles became the Champion at this popular event where some very good catches of roach, hybrids and bream.  There was some super fishing at the recent coarse angling festivals held down on Inniscarra Lake where Leitrim man, Charlie Greaves won two of the events back to back.  Roach dominated catches for English anglers fishing a variety of waters in the Longford area.  Anglers are reminded that all eel fishing is closed as a conservation measure.

Pike angling is coming to fore  now that the weather has turned a little cooler.  Up in Mayo, American visitors fishing with angling guide, Kenny Sloan, had great fishing on fly. They had a number of double  as well as a great fish of 22 lb .  On the River Shannon at Banagher there were pike taken on deadbait  up to 19 lb. and in the midlands some scouts had great sport on Lough Glore.  At present, the European Pike Challenge is taking place on Lough Derg and the fishing so far has been excellent with many fish between 15 and 20 lb. reported.  This weekend there is a big two day pike competition organised in Ballinasloe on the River Suck.  Contact Godfrey Donohoe on 087 2650495 if you want to fish this great event.

A fine tope was captured and released by an angler Kayak fishing out from a Wicklow beach.  The annual popular Rosslare small boats festival took place and a total of 33 species were recorded.  The Screaming Reels 1 team of four anglers took first prize.  The good bass fishing in Cobh continues where a party of Dutch anglers caught their first Irish bass.  Deep sea fishing outside Cork Harbour has been excellent for anglers fishing on board the Wreckhunter where good Cod and ling featured in recent catches.  There was a specimen bass reported from Courtmacsherry and out deep sea fishing charter skipper Mark Gannon there was some excellent Cod fishing reported.    Blustery conditions hampered deep sea fishing in the Shannon Estuary but skipper Luke Aston reports that there were a few days where he managed to bring some anglers out fishing mainly for Pollack on shads.  In north Clare there were reports of good bass fishing and up in Clew Bay there was a fine bull huss of 20 lb. reported from the shore.  The good deep sea fishing continues on Killala Bay for anglers fishing on board the Leah.  In Co. Antrim, there were only a few Porbeagle Shark reported this week for anglers fishing with skipper Hamish Currie out from Red Bay.

Finally, please see our press releases on our website at http://www.fisheriesireland.ie/ about recent fish kills and poaching convictions.  Inland Fisheries Ireland would like to thank those members of the public who contacted the Macroom office and those who used the 24 hour hotline for their vigilance. Anyone who sees pollution or poaching is encouraged to report it to our lo-call number – 0818 34 74 24.

Salmon Fishing Picks Up at Delphi

17/09 12 salmon landed by anglers since Monday. Sea trout were relatively quiet this week with condtions being extreme which definately did not help.

Monday and Tuesday we landed no salmon, which was due in part to the extreme weather.

Wednesday was a big improvement with 5 fish landed. They were all landed by the Shortt party with Mike landing 2, one of 4lbs8ozs and another of 12lbs. Both fish took an Annabelle and came off the Turn Pool. Mark Corps had the other three, two off the Turn Pool weighing in at 2lbs and 8lbs on a Tara and a Prawn Fly and one off Duffers Run of 3lbs on a Tara.

Thursday we had 4 fish all off Finlough. Mark Corps landed two more, from Salmon City, both on Collie Dogs and weighing in at 3lbs2ozs and 6lbs8ozs. Edwin Boyd also landed a fish in the same boat also from Salmon City on a Yellow Dog and weighing in at 7lbs14ozs. Chad Young from USA landed his first ever Atlantic Salmon of 6lbs2ozs also from Salmon City on a Shrimp Fly.

Yesterday we landed three fish, all off the river.  Mark Corps had one on a Yellow Shrimp of 7lbs5ozs from the Turn Pool. Peter Willmott landed a fish of 4lbs10ozs on an Allie Shrimp from the Quarry Flats. Finally our last fish was landed by Mike Heckler and turned out to be an escapee of 8lbs1oz. It took a Claret Bumble. I think I was the last one to catch an escapee on the rod about 5 years ago. Hopefully we wont see too many more of them. No fish have been landed today so far. That brings our total salmon landed for the year (not including the escapee) to 449. Hopefully they will stay relatively active for the remainder of the season and we will land a few more.

21/09: Some super salmon reported on my beats on the Suir.  Best by far was a super 22lb salmon on the lower Suir. Over the weekend the rise in water killed off the fishing for a while and Sunday we only managed 7 fish. Now the river is fishing really well and there are some excellent fish in it.
