Good shore fishing reported from the Beara Peninsula

FISHING ON THE BEARA

Paul Harris reports on shore fishing in the Beara Peninsula in West Cork

Shawn, Jason and Simon arrived for their annual visit and for once this year the sun was not shining out of a blue sky with a light south westerly wind.

This year they had to put up with stromg north and north east winds and although dull it stayed fairly dry for the duration of their stay. The wind direction took out some of their favourite huss marks although they still managed fish to to 9 lbs 7 ozs. They targeted some new marks for conger and landed 25 fish with many in the low teens and topped by a 17 pounder.

Pollack were just starting to show well as the sandeel move in and they were caught on a variety of baits and methods from soft plastics to float fished wrasse with the best fish at 7 lbs 11 ozs.

Float fished crab was deadly for the wrasse with catches of more than 30 a session and although a specimen sized fish was lost at the net they still landed them to 4 lbs.

To add a little variety to the week they also caught plaice, flounder, dabs and bass.

Cold affecting fishing on Inny, but big shoals of roach in the river

A small mixed bag
A small mixed bag

May 5th: The cold temperatures are still affecting everything and NE winds are not helping at all, despite this we did have word this morning that Wayne has had more success on the upper Inny:
Good news at this end of the Inny. The roach entered the Inny from Derravaragh and Loch Kinale. The river was full, shoals stretched for hundreds of yards, topping everywhere. I believe they run on the full moon, the evidence again backs this up. Yesterday Kevin, Tony and myself had over 120 lbs between us. Including a bream on the float. Water levels are still desperately low. Off to the Inny again now. ”

Hopefully things are looking up… (They are Not down here, Chris and Philip went up the Inny with today with a Fish finder, which found next to nothing, just some Trout on the surface and one small Jack Pike that fell to Philip. Not a Roach anywhere to be found from Tommy’s all the way up to Shrule Bridge!!)

Philip, Derek and Chris were out at Branigan’s Harbour yesterday and had a small bag of Tench, Roach and Perch despite cold conditions and rain.
Sam and Willy popped in yesterday with Ashley, their daughter, who is a rapidly growing star. Ashley Tubridy has appeared on the Late Late Show and has had a lot of success with her singing career.

Peter has been very quiet, he visited Coreen Forde where he had a great result with the Roach and others, he was pestered with large Pike.

Fishing for shad by the light of the silver moon in St Mullins, Carlow

Cool dude ! Cool Fish for Dave !
Cool dude ! Cool Fish for Dave !

It was an another short afterwork fish session. We headed down to St. Mullins for an annual shad fest. But this time we witnessed something special, which could be seen roughly once every 412 days. The supermoon phenomenon.

Supermoon over St Mullin's graveyard

A supermoon is the coincidence of a full moon with the closest approach the Moon makes to the Earth on its elliptical orbit, or perigee, leading to the technical name for a supermoon. 6th May was the date for this year perigee. How it  impacted on our fishing? It’s hard to say. Things were very slow, shad didn’t play the ball. We had many contacts, but managed to land only two fish on the ebbing water.
I think this year is very weird, everything is late and there is not huge number of shad in the river so far.

Stephen Brennan of irishsportfishing.com also fished St. Mullins at the weekend. Stephen, Dave Fitzpatrick and Ronan O’Halloran had great fishing catching around 40-50 fish, with 8 or 9 over the specimen weight. The fish fell to a slowly retrieved Tasmanian Devil. All swam away unharmed.

You can see his full report and see some excellent photos of shad at  http://irishsportfishing.com/2012/05/07/shad-fishing-st-mullins/

Sunday Morning Success for Noel King

The River Boyne has thrown up yet another big fish. This time a great wild brown trout. Noel king was having an outing this morning Sunday 6th May and enjoying the bank holiday weekend when he hooked into something that felt a bit special. After an extraordinary fight Noel succeeded in subduing a  fantastic 7.5lb trout. The fish was taken on a wet fly and is one that will live in Noels memory for some time. Wild river trout of this size a a very special catch and the Boyne produces a good number of these each year.

Excellent Brown Trout Fishing on the Boyne at Navan

Colm Lynch from East Coast Angling reports that the Boyne at Navan has been fishing very well over the last week or so. Dropping water levels have helped the fishing and trout anglers have been enjoying some nice catches on dry and wet flies.

Luke Walpole from Navan has had a lot of trout over the last week with many weighing over 1lb in weight. Lukes best fish was taken on Sunday 29th April on a streamer and in at weighed 2lbs.

Tony Lyoness also from Navan had a good number of trout to 1.5lbs on wet and dry flies. Also fishing last weekend was Mark Harris who had some nice fishing on Saturday and Sunday, three of the fish weighed over 1lb and  Marks best trout weighed 1.5lbs.

Hatches of interest to anglers include the terrestrial hawthorn fly which have produced some nice activity when blown over the water. There are also reasonable hatches of olives at the moment and the best period of activity is around 4pm in the afternoon. The mayfly hatch which can be spectacular on the Boyne at Navan is sparse and very sporadic but it has started. If the weather settles and warms it will take off and will produce its usual great fishing.

Further information, advice and reports are available from Colm Lynch at East Coast Angling, Balmoral Industrial Estate, Navan, Co. Meath. email: [email protected]

Mayo Lakes and Rivers Provide for an Angling Bonanza – Afloat Magazine

ANGLING – Despite the Nor’easterly winds and rain in recent days, anglers on Co Mayo’s lakes and rivers have reported good fishing, as Mayo Today reports.

Saturday 28 April was the day for the Trout Federation of Ireland’s Connacht Cup on Lough Mask, which saw an impressive count of 149 trout caught by 31 anglers from seven different clubs.

Eugene Nolan of Annaghdown took the top spot with 18 trout, five more than second place finisher Martin Feerick of Partry. Third place was taken by Aidan Hodgins of Loughrea, which also took the overall team title.

Meanwhile, the River Moy had its best week of the salmon season so far, with 70 fish caught throughout the system.

Foxford Salmon Anglers member Joe Cassidy landed an enormous 16lb salmon upstream of Foxford, one of a number of catches in various parts that broke the 10lb mark.
