Lough Mask Producing Excellent Sport

Ronan Cusack reports on plenty of good fishing on Lough Mask again this week, despite the cold north/easterly winds and icy showers. The majority of anglers reported to be having most success in shallow water on wetfly patterns.

The Partry Anglers were the host club for the Trout Angling Federation of Ireland (T.A.F.I.) Connaught Cup held on Lough Mask on Saturday last. This event was run on a 12-inch limit catch-and-release basis (all fish over 12 inches measured and released), and competitors enjoyed spectacular fishing, with 149 trout caught by 31 anglers from 7 clubs, which gives a rod average of 4.8! First place went to Eugene Nolan (Annaghdown) with a staggering 18 trout for 629cm. In second place was Martin Feerick, Partry, with 13 trout for 454 cm. Third position went to Aidan Hodgins, Loughrea, with 10 trout for 341cm. The winning team was Loughrea, followed in close second by Partry. Longest trout on the day went to Tony Tighe, Moycullen, measuring 45cm.

Also fishing Mask this week was Gerry O’Brien, Ballinrobe. Gerry fished with his son John over the weekend and they had 12 good fish and numerous undersize trout over the 2 days (best fish 2.25lbs-all released). Christy Crotty and a friend from Waterford also fished Mask over the weekend and they had 13 trout over the limit and again several undersize (best fish 2lbs-all released). Richie Yang and boat partner Harold Schmitt fished on Saturday last and they had 4 fish for their day (best fish 3lbs). Sean Maloney, Ballinrobe, had 6 trout for 3 outings last week (best fish 3lbs). Kevin Sheridan fished from Cushlough on 4 occasions last week and he had 9 fish in total (best fish 3lbs).

Ronan says the sheer abundance of well-fed small trout anglers are encountering on a daily basis this year gives a clear indication of the volume of natural recruitment of juvenile trout, there is to Lough Mask from feeder rivers and streams. The two main contributing factors for this are water quality and the volume of high quality trout spawning and nursery streams there are around Lough Mask. Thankfully much of the negative impacts of arterial drainage along rivers such as the Robe are being reversed by Inland Fisheries Ireland in conjunction with the Office of Public Works (O.P.W.). A number of local angling clubs have also contributed generously to the development of sections of river and streams in their local area and are seeing the fruits of their work. Partry Angling Club is indeed a prime example of this. Also the mild winter we experienced this year accelerated the availability of food in the lake, ensuring that young trout fed well through the winter months. It is great to see both fisheries and angling clubs working closely together for a common interest, and continuing to ensure that fish stocks are conserved and exploited in a sustainable manner for future generations.

Ronan also guides on Mask and can be contacted at [email protected] or on 087 2869487.

Margaret Gorman from Isham Self Catering and Angling Centre at Dringeen Bay on Lough Mask, reports that on Sunday, 22nd April, Adrian Gorman had a good day’s fishing from Dringeen Bay where he caught 3 trout and a number of small fish. All fish were returned to the water to fight another day. All of his fish were caught on a Pearly Dabbler and Cock Robin flies. French Anglers, Denis Martin and his family Gaston, Noelie, Emile and Jules had 15 trout over a week’s fishing from Dringeen Bay with their best fish weighing over 3½lbs. Best flies were Green Peter and Bibio. All fish caught were returned to the water. LAUNE SALMON AND TROUT ANGLERS’ ASSOCIATION WATERS AND BEAT 3

Angling Report 23rd April

As of Sunday evening 22nd April now up to 2 feet on the gauge at Johnston’s and running coloured from the Gweestin.  This colour should clear by Monday and provided we don’t get any more rain the Laune should be very fishable for the week by all methods.

No news of fish caught on Laune Anglers waters but hearing of a good few fish moving up stream.  The coming week with the lovely water should bring news of fish being caught in our waters and very soon they will start holding up in the pools.

Beat 3: Fished Beat 3 down as far as Poll Cloch on Friday, no sea trout or salmon but hooked three nice brown trout spinning and on salmon fly.  It was noticeable that there was a great rise of trout to whatever insect was being blown off the bushes and trees along the river bank.  Brown Trout fishing is an under used resource on Laune Anglers waters and on Beat 3.  Judging by the rise of nice trout good sport is to be had with trout rod and wet or dry fly or nymphs. Angling Report 30th April

Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers’ Association waters and Beat 3.

As of Sunday 29th April water now up to 2 feet 6 inches on the gauge at Johnston’s and running with just a hint of colour.  Perfect water for all methods and should remain so for the week.

There were two fish reported for the week and one of them said to be 20 lb. no details as to who the lucky angler was.

Good sport is to be had if you target Brown Trout I fished on Tuesday and caught a few up to 8 inches.  If you are fishing small flies then you will hook parr and smolts at this time of year so be very careful returning these indeed it would be better to use barb – less – hooks.

Beat 3: Water level on Beat 3 is perfect at the moment and I would be expecting to hear of seatrout or salmon from the Beat soon. For further information look up: www.launesalmonanglers.com Email: [email protected]

Despite the gloomy fishing weather salmon fishing is pretty good at the Delphi Fishery.

Robert Byrne with his 6lb fish pre release

I don’t know was it beginners luck or pure skill but it certainly was a great day on Mon 23rd April for Robert Byrne from Dublin who landed his first ever under the careful guidance of Robert Gillispie.

Robert landed a lovely 6lbs fish at Paddy’s Point on Doolough on a Galway Stinger, got some pictures and  then released the fish back from whence it came. He was a happy man at the close of play.

The river is now at 17 so hopefully we will get some of this rain that is forecast tonight and tomorrow. Having said that there are still fish to be seen so as one of our great stalwarts always says;  “you’d never know the minute.”

Besides that this morning is breathtakingly beautiful and picture perfect.

29/04/12 : Believe it or not we have had three fish since my last update despite extremely difficult salmon fishing conditions.

Water levels have dropped steadily all week and the river is now at 8.

I thought we were going to get flooded out with all the rain that was forecast but of course when Met Eireann give out warnings like this it generally means it’s going to rain in Dublin and we should get the sun hats out.

Since the bad weather in Dublin we have only had 15 mms of rain. So all I can say is that I wish we had some of the rain here.

Despite the gloomy fishing weather we did manage to land 3 sea liced fish.

Heidi Hoefler had a fine sea liced fish of approx. 9.5 lbs in the Whin pool on Wednesday on a Silver Stoat.

Michael Pettigrew also had a sea liced fish of approx. 9.5 lbs in the Rock pool on a Willie Gunn tube on Thursday. Then both Michael and his son Tim managed to break in a fish each which was a pity. Needles to say I reminded them of this fact.

Michael Pettigrew was top rod for the week and on Friday he managed to land a sea liced fish of 6 lbs2 ozs on a size 4 Cascade single in the Meadow pool.

We have some of Delphi’s top rods here this coming week so they will be severely tested as regards their piscatorial abilities.

Good salmon fishing reported from the Lough Currane system

Ghillie Vincent Appleby reports on the salmon and sea trout fishing in the past week on Lough Currane from his blog at http://wwwsalmonandseatroutphotos.blogspot.com/

24/4/12 there was reasonable action on the fly, local ghillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy and his client lost a fine fish on the fly after 45 minutes, my Noble Salmon got fed up taking the lead, and headed straight to the nearest submerged tree and the rest is history, on the evening stint Mr. Alister Dunbar of Scotland, caught a fine 6.5 lb. salmon on the fly, fishing with his ghillie Mr. Vincent O’Sullivan – www.vincentsfishing.com Wind was all over the place ESE S veered SW light to fresh, and veered back again.

Mr. Michael Shultz, Berlin, Germany with a nice salmon with ghillie Neil O'Shea.

25/4/12 There was a strong Easterly wind blowing down the Lake with plenty of heavy showers, but that didn’t stop Mr. Michael Schultz of Berlin Germany, catching a 7.5 lb. salmon on the troll with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea – www.oshealoughcurrane.com in the fly department, nothing to report but to be fair to my Noble fly Anglers, conditions were not in their favour.

Regular english visitor, Mark Knowles with a nice salmon with his ghillie Dominic McGillicuddy with a nice sea trout

26/4/12 the wind was in the east again today and the majority of anglers drew a blank, so I will go to quote of day and salmon of the day, Mr. Mark Knowles of the UK fishing with his ghillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy, went into the mouth of the Commeragh this evening and as they entered the Commeragh Local ghillie Mr. Vincent O’Sullivan – www.vincentsfishing.com was just leaving and said I have fished all day, and fished my best salmon flies, and told Dominic there is no way there fish in there, well Dominic being a professional, ignored his comments, and with in ten minutes of taking over from Vincent, Mr. Mark Knowles of the UK caught a fine salmon in the 6 to 7 lb. class and finished his evening off with a fine sea trout in the 3 lb. class, and here ended the lesson.  Wind as already stated with showers throughout the day.

Another nice salmon for Michael Schultz and Neil O'Shea

27/4/12 Again there was a fresh NE wind blowing down the lake, but this did not deter, Mr. Michael Schultz of Berlin Germany, catching a fine 6.5 lb. salmon on the troll with his ghillie Mr. Neil O’Shea and of www.oshealoughcurrane.com

Charlie, Gary and Richie at the Launch of Lough Currane DVD

28/4/12 I will start today’s notes on the launch of the Sea To Stream a Salmon & Sea Trout season on Lough Currane Video, narrated by Niall Toibin with Richie Johnston & Charlie Stuart. And I can tell you there was a good turn out in the Butler Arms Hotel, and this video, I can tell you is fantastic and a great advert To Irish Fishing and especially to the Waterville Fishery and if you would like to buy this video you can @ www.anglersview.tv I believe that Mr. Niall Toibin is a bit under the weather, and on behalf of all we anglers and fans alike we wish Mr. Niall Toibin a fast recovery to full health.  Now we head out onto Lough Currane and there was a fine 8 lb. salmon caught on the fly in Copal, by Mr. Michael Schultz of Berlin, fishing with his ghillie Mr. Neil O’Shea and of www.oshealoughcurrane.com now we go down stream to the famous Butler Pool  www.watervillegolflinks.ie Mr. James Hinchey caught a fine 7 lb. salmon on the fly with his ghillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy. Wind East light to fresh.

English visitor James Hinchey with a nice salmon on the Butler Pool

29/4/12 Lough Currane was on the wild side with a strong NE wind blowing across the Lake, two boats did venture out but failed miserably in their duties.

30/4/12 Wind was in the east again and sadly my Noble Anglers failed again. Wind as already stated, there was good cloud cover with the odd shower.  That is your ration for this week, from your ghillie/Guide and the Waterville fishery.  No Spin No Fly’s just facts.

Angling…with Brian Russell – Portadown Times

“TONY Hogg from East Antrim has been named the 2012 ‘Ulster Boat Champion’ thanks to a tough day of fishing on Lough Melvin. Cool and bright conditions made for hard fishing in search of the renowned sonaghan trout as over 40 of the nation’s top anglers battled for an advantage. In the end, the championship was won with just two fish – in fact, one proved enough to place some anglers in the Ulster team for September’s Inter-Provincial Championships. Lurgan’s Keith Moffit qualified for Ulster – plus home knowledge helped Garrison-based Joe Gilroy and James Docherty also make the squad.

Anglers have reported fish to on Lough Derg to traditional wetflys in the wave and dry Wulfs in the calmer water…..Portadown Times…02/05/12…read full article…

A great bunch of workers !
A great bunch of workers !

We spent the day (Sat 28th April 2012) in Dublin cleaning a wee Trout river(The Dodder) with the Irish Wildlife Trust and U.C.D. amongst others including the N.C.F.F.I. the A.C.I. and the Leinster Federation Lcffi. Two people remarked in passing that we are a dirty Nation and after seeing what we amassed from 1,000 yards I am more than inclined to agree with them. Fair play to all who attended.

ANGLING NOTES:

LOUGH Lein Anglers’ Association celebrated its 25th anniversary of “The Charity” competition in fine style on Sunday week with a turnout of 110 anglers to compete for the coveted Perpetual Charity Trophy on Lough Lein in Killarney.

The “canal” at Ross Castle was a sight to behold as bailers were much in evidence following recent rain and engines fine-tuned, some for the first time this season.
