Beware Himalayan climbers getting a foothold on a bank – Irish Times

Himalayan balsam
Himalayan balsam

ANOTHER LIFE: THE PLANT THAT burst into bloom in our gateway a few years ago was new to my eye, certainly pretty, and grown, perhaps, from a seed thrown off a passing lorry. Picking it to paint it was, perhaps, a lucky impulse. Left to produce its own seeds, it could have sprayed them explosively, raining little black ball-bearings for several metres all around.

The banks of the stream that ducks through a hollow at that corner of our acre could now be choked with thickets of Impatiens glandulifera, or Indian (Himalayan) balsam, joining the existing jungle of Fuchsia magellanica, the alien from Argentina…..The Irish Times..16/04/12…read full article..

Victory for anglers in by-law row – Enniscorthy Echo

A SHOWDOWN with Inland Fisheries Ireland has led to a group of anglers in Enniscorthy has ended in victory for the local fishermen after they forced a major re-think in an earlier ruling by the Dept. Enniscorthy Local Anglers Association (ELAA) was formed only in January of this year, directly as a result of local fishermen’s’ anger at new regulations introduced by Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI).

Buzzer and lure flies work for rainbows at the Cashel Trout Fishery.

Cashel Trout Fishery report by Marlene McLaughlin

Pleasant Easter weather has definitely helped anglers make their catches with us here at Cashel.  Bangor’s Michael Anderson used damsel to bank seven trout all of which he released.  Pat Nicell, junior and senior (Derry and Buncrana) accompanied by mate James McFeely (Derry) banked an amazing twenty-three trout between them which fell to assorted small lures.  Dungiven’s Andrew Logan caught thirteen in total, two of which he took home for tea which took small lures.  Dungiven’s Martin Bradley likewise did very well catching fourteen lovely trout all of which he released.  Mark Boyce (Dungiven) got five to the bank which took small buzzers.  Adam Semple (Dungiven) managed to get trout on the hook but unfortunately they got away.  Better luck next time Adam!  Jim Russell and Danny Walker (Monkstown) bagged three each for home and released one each back into the lake.  They used their old favourite, the Kate McLaren, to make their catch.

Good Catches on Lough Lene in Collinstown

Lough Lene in Collinstown, Co Westmeath has been fishing very well of late. Shay Sumner from Navan had six fish on one outing during the week the best of which weighed in at 4lbs. Duckfly patterns, emergers, black pennels and small black dry flies are all producing fish. Luke Walpole also from Navan had 10 rainbows on one outing during the week. All of Lukes fish weighed between 1.5lbs and 2.5lbs.

Salmon Trickle into the Boyne

Colm Lynch from East Coast Angling reports that salmon fishing is slow on the Navan waters at the moment and only two salmon have been reported taken on recent days. The best fish was reported to be in the 10lb bracket but in addition to the fish caught and released a number of fresh fish have been sighted in the area. Water levels are low and clear at the moment and no doubt some rain would help bring in a few fresh fish.

Olives and Hawthorns on the Boyne at Navan

Colm Lynch from East Coast Angling reports that water levels are low and clear in the Boyne at Navan at the moment. However, trout anglers are happy as the brown trout fishing on the River Boyne at Navan has improved in recent days. Good numbers of wild brown trout are now being taken on dry and wet flies and some on streamers. During the last week Simon Cassidy and Tony Linus have had lots of trout to 1.5lbs. Today Friday 13th saw large number of Hawthorn fly around the Kilcarn section of the river. As the Hawthorn flies get blown onto the water this is sure to stir the trout into action. There are also some olives around at the minute. Some trout are rising freely to dry flies but periods of activity are short lived.

Fishing, enjoying the sun, and littering – The Bray People

These days out walking along the river I note the spots where I did my fishing. I never graduated to fly-fishing. With me it was the simple worm or spinner. The thrill of pulling a trout out of the river was incredible. Indeed, the thought of it these days has tempted me to try my hand at it again. But what I have seen over the last few weeks has convinced me that I am far better off staying away from the river…..The Bray People…04/04/12…….read the full article..
