LAUNE SALMON AND TROUT ANGLERS’ ASSOCIATION WATERS AND BEAT 3
A few sea trout caught on Laune Anglers Waters. Anglers are still catching spent fish and anglers are asked to be carefully when fishing worms for salmon.
RIVER LEE
2 salmon landed on the Lee weighing 6 lb. each taken by local anglers.
It has been quiet a week weather wise here in Ireland with the bright sunny warm weather at the start of the week followed by a very cold snap with snow, sleet, rain and hail and since then much generally cooler weather with bright and overcast conditions at present. Despite the changeable weather fishing activity coming up to Easter is wonderful with anglers enjoying very good fishing for most species in freshwater and at sea. The only fishing which is slow is salmon fishing because water levels on most of our rivers and lakes are very low but that said I just heard that ten salmon were caught yesterday on Carrowmore Lake up in North West Mayo!
At the start of the week, there was plenty of activity down in Lanesborough where coarse anglers has some terrific fishing with good catches of bream up to specimen size along with big roach who appear to be ready for spawning so early this year. There was some excellent catches of tench reported there early in week with some nice fish to 5.5 lb. Up north the final of the float only league was fished last Sunday on the Roslea lakes and John Potters won the event with a nice catch of small roach. Down on the River Barrow there was some wonderful bream fishing reported from the lower Graignamanagh area where catches up to 60 lb. a day were reported.
Pike anglers are looking forward to the Lough Key angling festival this weekend and the big international pike festival taking place on Lough Ree soon and where there were some good fish reported in the past week. €20,000 of prize money is on offer for this popular annual international completion. The Lithuanian Pike angling club had an outing to Lough Sillan last weekend and they enjoyed excellent fishing and all fish were returned safely.

It is great to report at this time of year so much sea angling activity particularly at sea and well known charter skipper Mark Gannon reported some excellent deep sea fishing for his clients at Courtmacsherry. One of his clients, well known specimen hunter Christy Lane from Cork caught a fine Ling of nearly 25 lb. and wins our Catch of the Week award. Well known welsh angling journalist supplied us with an interesting article on stingrays in British and Irish waters. Charter skipper Siegy Grabher down in Valencia Island reported some fine fishing with good catches of Pollack, cod and coalies and many big basking shark were also spotted while fishing. Charter skipper Luke Aston reported on good deep sea fishing for his clients out from Carrigaholt on the Shannon Estuary including cod to 10 lb. and mackerel in good numbers in mid water. Similar catches were reported up in Mayo by skipper Donal Kennedy with cod featuring in good catches. There were many reports this week of good bass fishing off the Wexford, Waterford, Cork and Kerry coastlines.
Salmon anglers are praying for rain in most parts of Ireland as water levels have plummeted to record levels for this time of year. There were a few fish reported around but fishing is generally slow on most of our major fisheries. On Lough Currane only two fish were reported for the week while up in Carrowmore Lake in North West Mayo sport was excellent with many salmon coming to the fly in the past week. A few fish were reported from the River Moy and there was fish reported on the opening days of Beltra and on the Ballisodare River. At Delphi a few fish were reported but the area needs water badly. Conditions on the Drowes River and nearby Melvin produced a few fish but generally higher water levels are needed and salmon anglers are praying for rain.
Trout fishing has certainly come to the fore on many lakes and even the rain starved rivers but fishing was generally good with good hatches of flies providing good sport for anglers. Lough Ennell, Owel and Lene are fishing well with duckfly and other patterns working well. The duckfly fishing is practically over in the great western loughs where some hatches of olives have been seen in recent days. Anglers enjoyed good sport on Lough Conn in the past week. Many trout anglers are trolling on Lough Derg but fishing was described as tough. There were reports of good trout fishing on rivers in the Limerick area and up in the River Lagan and the Cusher. Rainbow trout fishing is still very popular around the country and there were good reports from Cashel, lough na leibe, Lough Rowan and on the Annamoe trout fishery.
Finally over the Easter period if you are going afloat, be sensible please wear a lifejacket, – it is the law and enjoy the excellent fishing that Ireland has in abundance on loughs river and at sea,
Tight lines especially in Ireland

Angling guide and journalist Mick Flanagan reports on pike fishing in the midlands area near Mullingar.
Nice Perch taken on Lure
SUPER PIKE. The Midland Lakes are producing some super pike these days, and anglers are catching some huge double figure pike. Local angling Guide Barry Darby was on Ree last week and had some super pike. Lough Derravaragh is also producing good double figure pike, and we are back at the pike this week. I hope to have some action shots of pike taking the bait next week. One of the top lures working at the moment is the Belly Dancer. Drop into Brian Conlon of Anglers World and check the Belly Dancer

OWEL NEWS. Last week I spend a few days on Owel and plenty of Duck – Fly has the Trout on the move. Good news for Owel Anglers as the competitions kick start on April 15th when we fish the Ace Cup. Last season we had some cars broken into and serious littering at Tullaghan and Mullallys, now the L.O.T.P.A. have installed CCTV cameras at both locations.
Well done to young Caitlin Smith who during our spell of good weather in March landed her first Trout from Owel. I hope the weather picks up once again for the Easter Holidays and Caitlin will be Out & About once again on the Trout scene with Dad Philip.

ENNELL NEWS. Last Friday night Lough Ennell Trout Preservation Association hosted their A.G.M. On the night the members honored Peter Caffrey with life membership. Quite a few anglers are fishing Ennell, and some good pike, perch and Trout are coming on line. It’s hard to entice an Ennell trout, and I was lucky enough to catch my first Ennell fish for 2012 last week. I met the Coogan brothers on Cherry Island, and Morris kindly took the photograph of my fish. The Lads are from the Curragh in Kildare, and have their boat in Whitebridge Bay.
Conditions were very variable this week on Melvin. The first four days of the week brought bright sunlight, very mild conditions (up to 22°C!) with varying winds. From Friday on however, the colder conditions returned again and sitting out in a boat was a cold affair once more. There were no salmon recorded over the week but there seemed to be a run of salmon into the lough at the weekend. On Sunday, Noel Johnston landed a 9½lb salmon, John Fox accounted for an 11¾lb salmon and Rodney Benson caught an 8½lb salmon. These were all caught trolling along the Garrison Shore.
The trout fishing remained fairly good when winds were suitable with a few rods reporting fair catches of trout, mainly from the shallows. There were a couple of reports of some of the Sonaghan being caught out in the deeps. One would presume given the early warm & sunny weather that there must be some plankton blooming to attract some of the Sonaghan from the shallows.
The excellent weather has certainly encouraged the trout to come to the surface a lot more hence making catches that little bit easier. Dungiven’s Andrew Logan released an amazing twenty-one trout which took wee olives and buzzers. John Hasson and Martin Bradley also from Dungiven released twenty-six and six trout respectively using f-flies and damsels. Gregory Scullion used the black gnat to catch his three trout while Shane Irwin (Dungiven) also banked three which fell to the green Montana.
Angling on the Drowes was variable this week. A number of rods fished over the week with most of these concentrating on the weekend. There was a least a few salmon recorded which gave an improvement over last week. On Monday, Alfred Vanderwalle recorded an 8lb salmon caught on a fly from The Blackwater. On Wednesday, Thomas Kirwin logged a 7lb salmon caught on a Cascade fly from the Mill Pool. Sunday was a better day with 3 salmon recorded. Jim Adamson logged an 8lb salmon caught on a prawn. Gary Morrow registered a 7lb salmon caught on prawn from the Washstones and James Morrin accounted for a 10lb salmon caught on a Cascade fly from The Catwalk.
The river is a little on the low side at present reading around 5. Light rains are forecast for the coming days and hopefully these will be heavy enough to lift the river a little.
All smile as this young chap displays his impressive catch
Anglers turned out in large numbers to wet a line on Lough Rowan on April fool’s day this year. The joke, however, was entirely on the trout as club members experienced some exceptional fishing in the warm conditions. This was clearly the best attendance at the fishery for a number of years with some rods catching over 40 trout on various methods. Large chironomid hatches saw spectacular surface activity throughout the day with the catch of the day going to one young angler from Longford who caught an overwintered rainbow trout of 5.5lb. This fish was sportingly returned to grow even larger!
This trout put up a struggle for Tommy Murphy as our picture shows
Anglers are asked to fill in catch return forms at the fishery sign located on the main slipway. This will enable accurate catch reports to be published to include succesful tactics for fellow members.

Charter skipper Mark Gannon reports on good deep sea fishing from Courtmacsherry.
The beautiful weather we have been experiencing of late has been great for fishing both offshore and in the Estuary. In the bay we have had good catches of Pollack, medium cod , coalfish, Ling, Bull huss, Ray, conger and the mackerel making a show but scattered. The inshore wrecks have produced some good fish lately with a near Specimen Ling for Christy Lane last Saturday and several fish in the 12 to 16 lb. range, Pollack to Specimen size with a few decent whiting and Haddock. In the Estuary ,anglers have reported good Flounder and an angler fishing on the Lady Patricia last Sunday showed me a picture of a beautiful 11 lb Bass caught in Courtmacsherry Estuary a few weeks ago. The fish was caught at Low tide with lugworm in no more than 3 feet of water from the wall above Flaxfort strand. Plenty of feed marking in the Bay so prospects looking good for over the Easter.
