Angling guide and journalist Mick Flanagan reports on trout fishing in the midlands.

OWEL NEWS. Last week I spend a few days on Owel and plenty of Duck – Fly has the Trout on the move. Good news for Owel Anglers as the competitions kick start on April 15th when we fish the Ace Cup.  Last season we had some cars broken into and serious littering at Tullaghan and Mullallys, now the L.O.T.P.A. have installed CCTV cameras at both locations.

Well done to young Caitlin Smith who during our spell of good weather in March landed her first Trout from Owel. I hope the weather picks up once again for the Easter Holidays and Caitlin will be Out & About once again on the Trout scene with Dad Philip.

ENNELL NEWS. Last Friday night Lough Ennell Trout Preservation Association hosted their A.G.M.  On the night the members honored Peter Caffrey with life membership. Quite a few anglers are fishing Ennell, and some good pike, perch and Trout are coming on line. It’s hard to entice an Ennell trout, and I was lucky enough to catch my first Ennell fish for 2012 last week.   I met the Coogan brothers on Cherry Island, and Morris kindly took the photograph of my fish.  The Lads are from the Curragh in Kildare, and have their boat in Whitebridge Bay.
