Better conditions result in greater catches on Lough Conn

Milder weather of late has led to an increase in fly activity on the lake, coupled with an increase in angling effort leading to greater catch returns.

Some anglers enjoyed great success, with Joe Quinn, Cloghans, boating ten trout in total over three days, all caught on Buzzers. Five of Joes’ trout were over 2lbs, with his best weighing a very respectable 3.5lbs and were taken in the Bog Bay and Cloghans areas. Stephen Brown, Cloghans, also had success with the Buzzer, with two of around 1.5lbs.

Gary Binley, Foxford had one of 1.25lbs to a Bibio, while nephew Ryan Binley, had two of 1lbs taken on a Duckfly. Boat partners, and frequent visitors to Lough Conn, Mick Sweeney and Liam McHugh, Loughrea, had six trout in total. Mick landed four, with his best weighing 2.5lbs, with Liam landing two, all fish taken on the Sooty-Olive.

Ronnie Chambers, Belfast, had two trout of 1lbs on the Buzzer, while Ian Wise and John Warren, Crossmolina, also had success on the Buzzer, with three trout between them in the Enniscoe and Bog Bay areas. Finally, Joe Moffat, fishing the Green Peter, had one trout of 2lbs and Harry McCafferty, Ballina had three trout on Wednesday past, taken on the Claret Bumble and Bibio.

Lough na Leibe continuing to fish, flies a closely kept secret!

Lough na Leibe is continuing to fish very well with good catches reported by anglers, with a total of 52 trout reported by six anglers for the week.  Bernard McDermott caught 6 trout on Thursday 15th and 11 trout on Friday the 16th all on secret flies which can’t be revealed this close to a competition ha-ha- ha. Dave Cadman and a friend also caught 8 trout between them on Friday. Francis Brady fishing with his nephew Oisin Fished the Lough on Sunday the 18th and was rewarded with a stunning total of 22 trout, in less than 3 hrs of fishing and Oisin caught one trout whilst spinning. Francis reported there was a large number of fish feeding steadily for a prolonged time in the surface layer of the water.  The action on Sunday was attributed to a substantial hatch of duckfly at the northern end of the lake.  As always if you have a catch to report please e-mail it to the Club email address available on the Club website. Successful fly patterns included the small midge patterns, small nymph patterns, buzzer patterns and emerging duckfly patterns, retrieved using a very slow figure of eight or fished static.

The next light line comp is on Sunday week, the 25th March. Once again Cobh SAC are hosting this event and if you’d like to fish then book your place before next Weds with either club secretary, Mary Geary, on 021-4812167, or Danny Kane, on 086-8161946.

Light Lines comp Cobh
The rules are kept as simple as possible; the only stipulation is that your mainline be 15lb bs or less. Rigs, snoods, shockleaders can be of any strength. The scorecard used is the same as for the National Fish-off’s and the fishing is identical. If you’d fancy a crack off making the National Boat Team then this is the ideal practice for you. Mind you, as it is a fun competition this outing is suitable for anglers of all skill levels and for the complete novices there are plenty of auld salts on hand to impart guidance and advice.
In our Jan comp there was an average of 37 fish caught per angler and in our Feb comp there was an average of 35 per angler. Here is the report and results of our last light comp to give you some idea Feb Light Line Comp. This months comp should produce similar fishing!
So come on, book in!!! You know its good for you!!!

Mackerel in March

Plenty of coalfish, pollack and some cod to be had – mostly on feathers (Hyabusa Sabiki or Shamrock Crazy Clowns). Fishing out of Mullaghmore, Co Sligo, Peter and his crew caught these fish at Bo More, Shaddon and east of Inishmurray Island in Donegal Bay. On 10 March they finished with six boxes of fish including some lovely fresh mackerel.

Frost back but olives still hatching on Bann and Cusher.

Beautiful Trout
Beautiful Trout

Both Rivers still are producing quality trout to nymphs and dries, although hatches tended to occur later in the day probably due to the overnight frost.  Mark Sloan won Saturdays Bann competition at Banbridge with a fine wild brown of 1.5lbs, Willie Russell was second and Neil Cardwell third. The Gilford stretch of the Bann  is also producing consistently with plenty of fish in the 20 to 28cm range falling for nymphs in the faster water.  The Banns tributary, Cusher isn’t being outdone by the parent river either with Bernie McMurray returning 40 trout over the 20cm mark for his day with local guide Brian Russell.  The bulk of these fish fell to baetis patterns both nymph and dry.
