LENE ON ST. PATRICKS DAY. Yes this year I drowned the Shamrock on the Lake, and not in the pub. I did manage to make it back to Town in time for the parade and well done to all who organized such a great few hours’ entertainment. Anyway back to the fishing, and what a few hours we had on Lene St Patrick Day morning. The fish were really fired up and seem to be on parade on the lake, with the first sign of Duck Fly. Not a lot, but the fish worked up the long slicks sucking down the few fly that were hatching. I met a few great characters from Trim in the form of John Magee, and Gerry Peppard, but the Morning belonged to 12 years old Jack Cottrell also from Trim who caught his first trout, and on the fly.

ANGLING NOTES: THE duckfly hatch is in full swing in a number of areas on Lough Corrib and trout have switched on to them and are feeding hard. Angling guides Tomi Kurman and Jacek Gorny enjoyed some great fishing with clients last week. Testing out some new hybrida lures spinning and trolling, the group landed some big ferox and a few small trout… Irish Times, 20/03/12. Read the article ‘Catching the fish of a lifetime‘.
A man died in hospital last night after getting into difficulty while angling on Lough Corrib. Another angler was last night receiving emergency medical treatment in University Hospital Galway after being rescued by the Irish Coast Guard. The two were among a party of three anglers who got into difficulties off Annaghdown yesterday afternoon, when their boat was hit by a wave which knocked one of them into the water. The man overboard was reported to have been wearing a lifejacket, but an empty jacket was then spotted on the surface near the vessel… Irish Times, 20/03/12. Good numbers of coarse fish are still being caught on Lough Ramor in Virginia in Co. Cavan. The harbour continues to produce hybrids, skimmers and roach. Most anglers opt for fishing the waggler with maggots for hook bait making this an ideal location for children to handle coarse fish.
Skeagh Lake near Bailieborough in Co. Cavan produced good numbers of silver fish for Chris McGregor last weekend. Chris prebaited a swim and recorded good numbers of silver fish and a couple of bream to 4lb weight. Castle Lake just outside Bailieborough is also producing coarse fish. The exceptionally mild weather had coarse anglers out in good numbers. Using brown crumb, castors and hemp for ground-bait and double red maggot as hook bait, feeder fishing, a local angler had 4kg of mixed coarse fish during the week.
On the Royal Canal at Enfield one Dublin angler reported some very good coarse fishing. Float fishing a lightly baited swim using the lift method, he was surprised when he landed a 7lb bream.
Ervey Lake near Kingscourt recently produced two nice pike weighing 14lbs and 16lbs. Both fish showed signs of spawning and were taken on popped up smelts. On Blessington Lake, a Dublin angler had a 17lb pike recently at Russelstown car park. This fish was caught using a deadbait, was in good condition and had not yet spawned. Despite this, Blessington Lake has not been fishing as well for the time of year.
