The first day this year we got a weather window we decided to head up north of Rathlin Island 27 km from Red Bay.  We got onto a deep water structure looking for specimens and skate.

The skate didn’t show up but plenty of conger, bullhuss and specimen spurdogs were taken. The mackerel have left the building but there are plenty of small herring and of course the coalfish are abundant.

Cod to 10.5 lb from Cork Harbour on soft plastics

10.5 lb Cork Harbour cod for Cian on soft plastics
10.5 lb Cork Harbour cod for Cian on soft plastics

I was out fishing with my son on Cork Harbour after a long spell of very windy weather. The boat is in the water all year around so we shot out for a cod session on soft plastics. Cian got a whopper of a cod on Harbour Rock. It weighed in at 10.5 lbs, his best ever. I have never seen a cod as big from this mark.

We were using soft plastics, mostly Wave Worms. Pink seemed to be the best colour on the day. Overall it was a  good session with coalfish and pollack caught also.

Bags of roach and hybrids to 69 lb on the Barrow

Members and friends of the Carlow Coarse Angling Club descended on the River Barrow system at the weekend and despite the cold weather and rising water levels managed to get bags of fish topping the scales at 50 lb plus. The bags of fish that are being produced from the Barrow are not being matched any where in the Country at the moment. Mr Noel Jenkins, long time member of the Carlow CAC, thoroughly enjoyed his day out with club Chairman Gerry McStraw and Paul McLaughlin, a River Barrow veteran. Noel racked up a new personal best for fishing the Barrow with a bag of hand sized roach weighing in at 26 lb. Noel’s favoured method of fishing on the day which worked well for him was the waggler presented with a 13ft Trabucco float rod.

Gerry McStraw finished the session with a staggering bag which consisted of mainly roach a few hybrid roach/bream including one that was almost 4 lb, one single dace and one perch which weighed in at 2 lb making Gerry’s overall weight 52 lb. Gerry fished with one of his imported home-made peacock quill floats presented by a 14ft Trabucco match rod. Bait used on the day consisted of two loaves of fresh white bread ground down to crumb and four pints of frozen maggots.

Mr Paul McLaughlin had an absolute cracker of a days fishing eventually weighing in a staggering bag of roach and hybrids weighing 69 lb. Paul’s secret bait on the day turned out to be hemp seed that he had prepared himself with the added ingredient chilli which produced some very nice sized hybrid fish. Mr McLaughlin was heard to say that it was probably the best two days fishing he has had in a very long time as the previous day he had managed a bag of well over 50 lb of roach.

Predatory pike a fantastic quarry – Enniscorthy Guardian, 10/01/12

By ASHLEY HAYDEN

Tuesday January 10 2012

I RECEIVED a text the other day from David Murphy which read ‘check your emails’. Now that can mean only one thing thought I to myself, he’s caught a decent pike.

A few days before Christmas David had been discussing buying a new pike kit – ‘I’ll bet that he has purchased said tackle and christened it on his first outing’. Opening up the wordless message sure enough there was an image attached, and opening it revealed a fine double-figure pike displayed by one very happy angler.

David had got a heads-up about a small lake not too far from where he lived. Carrying a stock of coarse fish to include rudd, roach and perch, word had it that lurking in its shadowy depths also were some very large pike. Not one to rest on his laurels, David hatched a plan.

Armed with frozen dead roach, David arrived at the venue early and after a bit of scoping decided to set up in a likely corner close to some reed beds. Setting up his matching Shimano pike rod and bait runner reel to which he attached a wire trace, David baited up with a dead roach and cast into a deep hole close to the reed beds.

To cut a long story short, it could not have gone better for him, as by lunchtime the intrepid angler had hooked three pike and landed two. The first was a jack pike around five lbs., followed shortly afterwards by a serious fish well into double figures which David lost at the net.

Hidden cameras rolled out to snare poachers – Irish Independent, 09/01/12

By Colm Kelpie

Monday January 09 2012

COVERT mobile cameras are being rolled out along the State’s rivers and lakes in a bid to clamp down on poaching.

The state-of-the-art CCTV equipment is being introduced for the first time following a successful pilot scheme launched in north Dublin last month, the Irish Independent has learned.

Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI), which is operating the scheme, said the technology will help its officers respond more effectively to incidents of poaching.

“Primarily we want these cameras to be covert and we don’t want people taking too much notice of them, so they can do their job without being broken,” a spokeswoman said.

“It’s really about working smarter, getting the best use of our resources because they are reducing all the time.

“We get lots of reports and we try to investigate all of them, but it’s not always possible to get the right evidence or somebody might mistake what they’re looking at. So this will be to verify what they’re looking at.”

Red Bay reels them in – Irish Times, 09/01/12

ANGLING NOTES: WITH more than 25,000 claims recorded since its inception in 1955, the Irish Specimen Fish Committee database is one of the most valuable and long-running sources of information of its type in the world.

Great credit is due to the committee for its dedication over the past 56 years, which culminates annually with a presentation of awards. Each year the report is eagerly awaited by anglers who endeavour to catch and record the biggest fish of each species.

The 72-page glossy report for 2011 is beautifully presented with more than 50 colour photographs and catch details for 587 specimen fish including four new records. This is a far cry from, say, the 1983 report of dull unassuming type and not a photograph to be seen in its 32 pages.

Renowned specimen hunter Terry Jackson made the headlines with a new record roach/rudd hybrid of 2.1kg caught in the River Lagan, Co Antrim, on maggots. Terry went on to record six similar specimens from the same venue. His record roach of 1.425kg from Drumacritten Lake in Co Fermanagh 10 years ago still remains intact.

Red Bay in Co Antrim continued to set the pace for many of our marine species. Jan Vrieswijk from Holland created a new record for blackmouth dogfish of 1.33kg and Albert Koawenhourn, also from Holland, pipped the one-year-old record for spur dogfish by just 0.17kg. Of the 107 specimens claimed, 78 were caught in Red Bay.

A happy new year to all anglers fishing in Ireland this year and may you enjoy good fishing throughout the year whether you are fishing in freshwater or at sea.   The New Year certainly brought in some very stormy weather with a mixture of heavy rain, some sleet and some cold weather on occasions.  Despite this there was a fair bit of angling activity mainly in freshwater.

There was plenty of pike anglers out over the festive season and catches were very good although many of our big river systems were in winter floods so the best of the fishing was mainly on loughs.  Three days after Christmas 12 year old Aaron Murray caught a super pike of 21 lb. 6 oz on Lough Gara and wins the Catch of the Week for the Christmas week.   There was a few pike competitions and the Ardee club fished a lake in Monaghan and the winner was club member Andrius Kryzevicius with 21 fish for 48 lb. and plenty of other fish were recorded on the day with the best pike weighing 11 lb.  15 anglers from the Drogheda and District anglers held a competition last Thursday on a lake in Co. Monaghan, and 69 pike were recorded on the day.

Some nice shore fishing recorded along the Wicklow beaches

A party of anglers from the Howth Sea angling club recently fished the beach,  north of Wicklow Town last week.  They fished into dark and recorded some nice dabs, small whiting and some dogfish.

Plenty of Pike recorded at the Ardee Angling Club's Christmas Pike Competition.

Pat O’Gorman reports on the Ardee Christmas Pike Competition which was held on a nearby lake on wednesday the 28th of December 2011.
There was plenty of activity with many pike recorded on the day with the best  fish weighing 11 lbs.
