Kit is working with some scientists this week, helping out with a tagging programme, hoping to learn a bit more about the movements of these important species in our coastal waters.

Jim Nowotynskie of Irish Deep Sea Charters made the most of the nice conditions and small tides on Sunday to get to an offshore wreck in search of ling.
The water temperature had come up nicely in the past week and over the morning was they had their first real hit of mackerel. So with plenty fresh bait they had a good day over the wreck and the ling weren’t long coming aboard.

Munster Blackwater river levels were at normal level last week – low and clear. Catches of the larger Salmon on the Blackwater has lessened somewhat with the arrival of the smaller Grilse which are present in the upper estuary in good numbers.
Having said this Salmon angling remains comparatively slow compared to previous years (not including 2023) with the best or more frequent catches from those fisheries from Fermoy downstream to Cappoquin.
One of 4 salmon for Bill at Fortwilliam
At least one angler did enjoy some good fishing though. Bill Connolly, guided by Chris Coady, had a cracking days fishing on the Fortwilliam Fishery. Ball caught and released four salmon all on fly, and he met a and played a few other fish too.

The fishing is spread throughout the middle section of the river to offer good sport throughout the fishing season. Killybegs Mariners SAC members enjoyd great fishing during the week. See their short report below…
A brilliant day’s fishing with an incredible 21 species landed between Christopher, Gavin and John out aboard St Catherine on a glorious balmy summer’s day on Donegal Bay.
Always lovely to see the haddock, plaice, turbot, spotted rays along with all the rest of the species.
Earlier in the week, Cormac Duddy enjoyed nice fishing with good size ballan wrasse, a new club record shore coley of 47cm and good conger from a local shore mark.
A total of 52 rods fished the Ballinlough Fishery over the past four weeks catching over 100 trout many of which were released. Amongst the successful anglers were Dan O’Donavan and Mike Shanks who had a phenomenal 18 trout for their day’s fishing including a fine rainbow trout at 3.75 lbs. The biggest rainbow trout for that period, however, was caught by the P. McGuinness party weighing 5 lbs., while David Duffy and boat partner recorded the heaviest brown trout at 4 lbs.
Most successful flies included Green Peter, Boobies, Daddys, Invicta, Dabblers and Buzzers as well as several nymph patterns such as Daiwl Bach and Montana. Fishing dries also worked well for some particularly later in the day or during evenings. Dry sedge patterns were most successful.
Ballinlough is a shallow, limestone lake of 22 hectares located 3.2km north of Westport and is managed by IFI. It is a rich lake with a marl bottom and has been stocked with rainbow trout and brown trout. The fish are known to be free rising, and are encouraged by hatches of olives, sedges and wind-blown terrestrials. Trout can be taken on traditional wet flies including Peter Ross, Bibio, Invicta to mention but a few. Streamer patterns such as the Minkie and nymphs can also work well. Dry flies, however, can also provide great sport particularly during evening times and during sedge hatches.
