Good pike action on the fly in the Foxford area

Angling guide Kenny Sloan with Paul Dennis, displaying his catch

Foxford based angling guide Kenny Sloan reports recent success with clients while pike angling in the Foxford area. Dublin anglers Wayne Oldfield and Paul Dennis, joined Kenny for a fly-fishing trip, and were well rewarded for their efforts. With conditions overcast, mild and with a large wave, the pike were in feeding form. In total the pair boated 12 pike, the largest weighing in at approximately 14lbs, the rest averaging 8lbs. Large flies tied with Flashabou pearl, silver tinsel, red tinsel and white bucktail were the most productive.

The Cork Small Boats Festival won by Welsh boat O2B@C

The Cork Small Boats Festival was won by new comers O2B@C  from Wales.

O2B@C leapfrogged the hardy annuals like team Skua, team Screeming Reels, and others on the last day in what had been a very close competition all week.
Despite the inclement weather (thick fog, gales and more) over 30 species of fish were caught. The winners had 25 species themselves and were followed by a number of boats on 24 species.
The beauty of hosting this event in Cork Harbour is that no matter what mother nature may throw at the competitors the confines of the Harbour itself allows shelter from nasty weather and still access to good fishing!

Heavy rain in the past week brought some better salmon fishing for anglers trying to catch that last fish of the season as nearly all salmon fisheries closed until 2012 on the 30th of September.  The last river to close is the River Fane which remains open until the 12th of this month and the fishing there in the past week has been excellent with fish up 18 lb. recorded.  There was very little salmon fishing reported from the Cork Blackwater due to low water levels.  The rivers Coomhola and Ilen in west Cork fished well with some nice salmon up to 14.5 lb. reported.  On Lough Currane there there were only a few salmon reported at the close of the season on the 3oth September.  Good numbers of sea trout were reported last week and looks set to continue until the 12th of October.  There were a few nice salmon recorded in the last week on the River Laune.  The Connemara fisheries at Ballynahinch, Inagh, Kylemore, Delphi and Erriff all produced some nice fishing for the last week and most of these fisheries report their best season in years.  The annual Owenmore River last cast competition raised over €1200 for charity.  It was a quiet last week on the Moy but over 9,000 salmon were recorded on the rod for the season.

The trout angling season is over on all our rivers and most of our loughs except for the Midland Trout loughs finishing on the 12th of October.  The annual Stream Rehabilitation competition was fished on Lough Sheelin and Jimmy Heneghan from Mayo won the 19 ft. Sheelin Boat with a fine trout of 5 lb. 5.4 oz.   There was patchy fishing on Loughs Owel, Ennell and Lene due to the changeable weather.  Ryan Binley won the Kieran Lynn Memorial Cup on Lough Conn.

More anglers are now turning their attention to Pike fishing at this time of year and catches in the past week have been very good.  Pike up to 15 lb. 9 oz were recorded at the latest National Championship Qualifier held on the River Shannon at Castleconnell.  There was some excellent pike fishing reported for a belgium group fishing with angling guide Kevin Lyons at Melview Lodge in Co. Longford with fish to over a metre recorded (over 20 lb.).   Bad weather conditions for pike fishing on Lough Ree were quiet difficult at times for anglers but angler did record some nice fish.   Up at the Oaks Fishery in Co. Derry, there was a lot of pike reported in the past week.

There is still a lot of coarse fishing going on around the country and there were reports of excellent bream catches taken by english anglers fishing at Portumna.  Robert Howgate won the Sheemore Angling Festival at Carrick-on-Shannon.  There was some wonderful catches of Roach, Hybrids and some bream for anglers fishing the annual Cootehill Festival which was won by a Dutch angler.  A Belgium party had very good Roach, Hybrids adn bream fishing staying at Melview Lodge in Co. Longford.  There was a qualifier for the Irish team held on the Newry Canal last weekend and many anglers are in the hunt for a place on the Irish National Team going into the last round.

The blustery weather conditions made it a difficult week at times for sea anglers but there was some excellent fish recorded around the coast.  Pride of place goes to Krzysztof Knopp a regular visitor from Poland who landed a great 16.5 lb. bass at Courtmacsherry.  This fish is our Catch of the Week and is the biggest bass recorded since the present record of 17 lb. 13 oz. record fish recorded way back in the year 2000.  It is also the forth biggest bass ever reported to the Irish Specimen Fish Committee.  The same angler also had some superb deep sea angling with charter skipper Mark Gannon recording a fine skate of 175 lb. in the same week!  French anglers had some fine bass fishing in Cork Harbour fishing with angling guide Richie Ryan.   Up in Clifden there was some excellent cod and pollack fishing for anglers fishing with charter skipper John Brittain.  A great range of species were recorded by a group of anglers fishing with charter skipper Donal Kennedy in Killala Bay.  The shark fishing is finished for another year up in Red Bay in Co. Antrim but anglers enjoyed catching some wonderful cod, conger, skate and more species fishing with charter skipper Hamish Currie.

The River Fane continues to fish well for salmon and the river remains open until the 12th of October.

The heavy rain which fell along the east coast on Friday and Saturday last has brought increased catches of Salmon  on the River Fane during the last few days.

Paddy Crudden of Ardee had a very large fish on Monday of approx 18lbs which was returned. On Tuesday Paddy had another lovely fish of 11lbs. Other Salmon caught Anthony Carty, Dundalk 10lbs., Gordon Moore, Walterstown, Dundalk 11lbs., Bernard Halpenny, Collon, Co. Louth 7lbs., Brian Hughes, Newtownhamilton, Co. Armagh 7lbs.

Water levels are excellent at present and fishing conditions should remain good until the end of the season 12th. October. Salmon are now being  caught all along the river right up to Inniskeen and beyond.

Ballynahinch has most successful salmon season in many years

Simon Ashe reports from Ballynahinch Castle Fishery on the end to a great season:

Ballynahinch has just completed one of its most successful fishing seasons in many years. The total catch of over 110 fish to the fly on the Castle Stretch was very respectable whilst the total catch of approximately 350 fly caught salmon for the whole catchment is the best in many years. September, as expected, came in with a solid 40 fish with 35 being returned.

A summer frequented by numerous floods and unseasonably windy days, made for some fantastic salmon fishing leaving very few blank days in the fishing register at the hotel.

The largest fish of the season, a fresh springer of 14.25lbs fell to regular angler, Ann Corcoran with Tom McManus coming a very close second. Top rods for the year were Tom McManus and Stephen Cullinane. There were a great deal more multi-sea-winter fish in the system this season compared with other years and it would seem that this trend was replicated throughout the country.

Counter figures would appear to be slightly down on last year’s record return; however, they would appear to be in line with the five year trend. The numbers of large sea trout increased year on year, however, the finnock numbers continue to struggle, most likely due to low numbers of spawning fish over the past few years. We are confident that sea trout numbers are still going in the right direction.

The fish-out competition on the last day of the season proved to be a great success once again with 5 fish landed and returned safely to spawn. The top prize was shared by local guides, Frank Flaherty and Michael Van Mourick who each returned a 12lbs fish on the day.

Regular angler, Stephen Cullinane, landed the most magnificent trout on the fly whilst fishing on the Lower Sna Beg beat on 16th September. The fish, weighing in at 15lbs 5oz, was the largest trout landed (as far as we are aware) on the Ballynahinch System in living memory. We are currently unsure if this fish had spent any time feeding at sea, or on other trout in the freshwater, however, when the scales are examined over the winter it should shed more light on the issue. The fish is currently with the taxidermist and will be on display in the Fisherman’s Pub at the hotel from next season.

A great end to the season at Delphi – lots of fish and happy anglers

06/10: Fishery manager David McEvoy reports from Delphi on a fine end to the season: The big news is that we did break the 500, although it wasn’t until the 30th and as most people know any method of rod and line goes.

There are some fish to report before the 30th. We actually landed 4 on Thursday. Mark Corps had 2, one off the Turn Pool of 7lbs 8oz on a Prawn Fly and one off Finlough of 4lbs13ozs on a Flamethrower.

Jeremy Nieboer had one off Finlough of 4lbs 3.5oz on a Collie Dog and finally Stephane Lamotte from France landed his first ever, a fish of 5lbs 8oz on a beaded nymph.

On the 30th we ended up with 49 fish all of which were caught on other methods. The most important element of this day is that it’s a fun day out for staff and locals. This it turned out to be and we had a great day with a lovely barbecue for lunch. It’s always great to see people catching fish that normally don’t get a chance. As usual there were quite a few firsts including;

Blain McNally, Killeen, 3lbs 13.5oz; Maura Prendergast, Louisburgh, 4lbs 12oz;

Kevin Gibbons, Louisburgh, 6lbs 7oz; Grace Wade also had the last fish of the season and her second ever of 6lbs 6oz.

I must mention Paul Wymes who aided and abetted 10 people to catch salmon who normally wouldn’t get the chance. This gesture made for a lot of happy people.

September’s total ended up at 53 salmon landed plus 49 on the last day which makes a total of 102. Sea trout have not all been totalled yet but again it will be well down on last year and the previous. This brings the total salmon landed for year to 528.

I would like to say thank you to everybody who made this season such a good one. Hopefully we will have many more in the future.

End of season report from the Erriff – a massive improvement on last year

September crowned a great season on the Erriff, with 165 salmon landed, bringing the season total to 528, the best season since 2001 and a great testament to the hard work done by fishery manager Jim Stafford and his staff, as well as the fishery protection staff over the last few years. Catch-and-release was a huge feature on the Erriff this season, with 267 salmon released again, or just over 50% of the catch, meaning an additional 500,000 eggs will be deposited in the river during this winter’s spawning season.

The last week of the season featured some big floods, making the river unfishable at times, but 35 salmon were landed, including 6 for Dr. H. Gordon from Galway over 2 days on Beat 7. David Fleming, Australia landed 3 fish in 2 days fishing – best fish estimated at 10lbs, all sportingly released. Regular visitor Stuart Woodhead, from Scarborough, N. Yorkshire had 3 fish – best a fresh run fish of 6.5lbs caught in the Holly Pool, while Juigo Tellache, Spain fishing the Erriff for the first time, caught his first ever salmon at 6.25lbs in the Colonel’s Run on Beat 6, and went on to catch another two which were released.

Albert Caffery, Athy and Liam Maloney from Dublin caught the last two salmon of the season on the last day of the month and Norbert Meier, Luxembourg caught the last sea trout of the season in the Coronation Pool on Beat 8.

With the massive improvement in catches on the Erriff this year, anglers and staff alike are already looking forward to next season. The removal of the driftnets seems to have had a big impact on salmon runs here, as this year was the first full life cycle following their removal, and the benefits were clear to be seen. Hopefully this upwards trend will continue over the next few years, and already the Erriff is on its way back to being the premier spate salmon fishery in the west of Ireland.

The lodge remains open for non-fishing guests for the next month or so, with excellent rates on offer. To book accommodation, contact Jim at Aasleagh Lodge on 095 42252, or email [email protected]

Pike to 15 lb. 9 oz. for anglers fishing the latest Kingspan National Pike Championships qualifier held on the River Shannon at Castleconnell.

John Chambers reports from the Irish Federation Pike Angling Clubs website at www.angling-in-ireland.com on the October Qualifier which was held on the River Shannon at Castleconnell last Sunday with kind permission of the ESB.
“42 anglers turned up for todays qualifier at Castleconnell. We had hoped for a bigger attendance but a lot of anglers expected the river to be in flood with all the recent rain. Because there is a dam upriver flow is regulated and levels were only up about a foot. With that bit of fresh water it does seem to have put the pike off a bit as catches were not as good as usual.”

The top 5 anglers who go through to fish in the Final of the Kingspan National Pike Championships are
1st Paul Martin jnr (Ardee)
2nd Ray Keyes (Tullamore)
3rd John Chambers (Dublin)
4th Pat Behan (Dublin)
5th Pat Gorman (Tullamore)

Paul Martin jnr, Ardee had the heaviest fish of  15 lb. 9 oz.
