Not a huge pike, but a well earned reward for French Angler Pierre Henneron on a windy day

I fished Lough Ree on Monday this week in blustery conditions with visiting Angler Pierre Henneron. We managed a few pike to 8lbs in sheltered Bays, and hope to get back out later this week in deeper water, and have a go at some big fish. Its a huge span of water, and if you are going for the first time this winter, take care and please ware your lifejacket.

Skipper of the Leah, Donal Kennedy, reported on a recent successful trip out on Killala Bay. A party of anglers left Killala Harbour on Saturday the 1st for a short trip in relatively calm conditions. The weather was dull with some sunny periods and light winds. Crossing the Killala Bar, it was a delight for the party to view close up a young basking shark, not more than 2m long, feeding in only 3m of water.

The first part of the day the Leah drifted over sand and this produced some fine thornback ray, the best was up to 8lbs. A nice variety of fish were caught including, pouting, poor cod, red gurnard, grey gurnard, whiting and the ever present lesser spotted dogfish. The party then moved to another part of the bay and a number of ling up to 5lbs and pollack (up to 8lbs) were caught. There were also plenty of mackerel caught, with a large number of these being the smaller ‘Joey’ mackerel.

Ryan Binley wins Kieran Lynn Memorial Cup on Lough Conn

On Saturday, 24 September the Kieran Lynn Memorial Cup was fished out of Murphy’s Boat Hire with 35 anglers participating. Results were as follows: First place and heaviest fish went to Ryan Binley, Foxford. Runner up with the heaviest bag of 3 trout was Niamh Lynn. Third place went to Kieran Foley who had the 2nd heaviest fish and in fourth place was Liam McHugh.

Elsewhere, German angler, Joachim Bauer, had two trout for 2 lbs., while Christy Flynn caught a fine trout for 1.5 lbs. on a Claret Dabbler.

A busy end to the season on the Glenamoy River

The salmon season ended on the Glenamoy River with a busy week, with angling conditions suitable on most days. Local and visiting anglers both enjoyed a successful season on the river, particularly in the latter weeks. Some of those to enjoy good sport in the final days were Rasmus Laurissen, England, who had two sea trout, Matt Fitzpatrick, Westport, who caught an 8.5lbs salmon, Pedar Sullivan, Co. Offaly, with a 7lbs salmon and Pat Lawlor, Co. Offaly, with a 6.5lbs salmon.

Owenmore River last cast raises €1200 for charity

The final day of this year’s salmon season was marked on the Bangor Angling Club stretch of the Owenmore with the annual ‘Last Cast’ event, which raised over €1,200 for charity. Forty-six anglers took part in this catch and release event which was attended by both local and visiting anglers, with countries such as the U.K., France, Germany and Sweden also represented. Conditions were far from ideal, as the river rose considerably throughout the day. However, a total of 22 salmon were caught and safely released to the water. Those who participated were treated to food and entertainment following their day on the river.

Season closes quietly on the Moy, but about 9000 salmon taken

Catch reports for the last week of the angling season were down somewhat from previous weeks catches. However, the Moy still yielded a very respectable 258 salmon for the closing week, bringing the annual catch total to approximately 9,000 salmon.

The Ballina town fisheries experienced virtually no angling effort on the closing days, as anglers concentrated their efforts on the middle and upper fisheries. The Ballina Salmon Anglers water, Mount Falcon, Knockmore, Byrne’s, Armstrong’s, Gannon’s and the Foxford Fishery all enjoyed a relatively productive close to the season. The Rinanney and East Mayo Anglers Association waters also enjoyed good sport in the closing period, with notable catches at East Mayo including Roy Wilson, Belfast, who caught and released a fine 15lbs salmon on the fly, and Ian Guegan, Co. Mayo, who had three to the fly on one day, all released. On Cloongee, Aiden Crean, Co. Dublin, caught one of 5lbs on fly, while Denis Epron, France, had a grilse while spinning.

End of season reports on the River Laune, River Ilen and and Coomhola River where the best salmon weighed 14.5 lb.

Last Angling Report – 30th September

Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers’ Association waters and Beat 3.
As of  Friday 30th September water at 2.5 feet on the gauge at Johnston’s.  River running dirty from coloured water from the Gweestin and streams above Beaufort Bridge rendering the river only fit for worming from midday to about 5 pm.  When the river cleared later on the fishing was still disappointing, as it was all the week apart from Monday when a few fish were caught, among them sealiced fish.
The last two weeks of the season were disappointing considering the good fishing we had for the first two weeks of September and the lovely water we had up to closing day.  From Tuesday on there were only one or two fish a day caught from perfect water.   John Scanlan had a lovely fish of 7 lb. on the fly, on Thursday the only fish for the day despite a very big angling effort.
Beat 3:
Fishing on Beat 3 for all of September was disappointing on the whole with meeting a fish being the exception rather than the rule as it should have been with the water level at what would be considered ideal for the Beat.

Shark season finished at Red Bay, time for cod, conger, skates and the rest

Blonde ray from Red Bay
Now that the shark season is finished we'll focus on the other species
Blonde ray from Red Bay
Now that the shark season is finished we'll focus on the other species

That’s another year came and gone for the sharks as far as I’m concerned and now its back to basics. There are a few nice rays and cod about. Those photographedwere caught locally as conditions have prevented us travelling far from Red Bay. The herring shoals are running up and down the north channel along with the Joey mackerel and are excellent bait for the cod and rays (whole of course).  The bigger tides are keeping me inshore and when I get a few calmer days I will hunt the far side of the channel for skate, conger, spurs and so on.

Charter skipper Mark Gannon reports that the fishing in Courtmacsherry in the last week or so has been good with plenty of fish in the bay.  Pollack to 10 lb. were common, cod to 15 lb., shoals of coalfish average about 3 to 4 lb., conger to 30 lb., Ling on the inshore wrecks to 20lb.  Mackerel were plentiful but small. Ton Sol from Amsterdam a frequent visitor to Courtmacsherry along with Krzysztof Knopp and Mihal Figlarz, two of his colleagues from Poland chartered the Lady Patricia skippered by Niall O Sullivan last week.  The weather was blustery with winds mostly south to southwest.  On the inshore wrecks they caught plenty of ling to 20 lb.   While skate fishing Krzysztof Knopp landed a  fish over 170 lb. which took over 2 hrs to land.  Blue sharks were caught to 2.35  m and plenty of medium sized cod and pollack.

The joey mackerel were plentiful and on the Wednesday with conditions deteriorating it was decided to head for the harbour and fish for bass with live joeys.  The tide was on the flood and Krzysztof had a good run, striking the fish which took 50 m of line he played the fish for 25 minutess. When landed the bass weighed in at 16.5  lb. which is probably the biggest Bass landed this season.  On Sunday the 2nd October  with a French contingent from Boulogne sur Mer, fishing after the rugby game of course, we headed out in the bay with very foggy conditions and a swell from the south. Plenty of cod and pollack to 10 lb. using live joeys  and at anchor we caught conger to 30 lbs.  On Monday we headed out to the sharking grounds and caught blues to 2.20 m.

On the big bass reported here, Dr. Willie Roche from the Irish Specimen Fish Committee has confirmed that this is the biggest bass reported to the committee since the record of 17 lb. 13 oz. was recorded off the Clare coast in 2000.  It is also the fourth heaviest bass ever recorded by the Committee.  Skipper Mark Gannon is sending in a specimen claim for the fish and is sending up scales from this magnificent fish for age analysis.
