New rainbow trout fishery in Co. Carlow – Southern County Fishing Resort

Pat Foley is a man with a vision, along with his family he has developed a fine angling and agri-tourism facility close to the village of Myshall in south county Carlow. The Southern County Fishing and Family Resort, 10 minutes from the M9 motorway, encompasses 45 acres of undulating landscaped surroundings in the foothills of the Blackstairs Mountains overlooked by Mount Leinster. Including 10 acres of water on three different rain fed lakes, stocked with rainbow trout reared from an on site hatchery, these fish are in superb condition fully finned and fighting fit. Ranging in size from 1.5 lb. to over 10. lb., be prepared for fish to take you to the backing.

Officially opened by Minister Phil Hogan T.D. on 1st September 2011, the facility also includes 3 kilometres of walks and cycle ways, a pet farm, children’s play area, tackle shop along with a purpose built club house and function venue.

Most definitely in the premier league of Irish managed fisheries, I will most certainly be paying it another visit. An ideal location for a family day out, Southern County Fishing Resort will satisfy experienced and novice anglers alike and in my opinion is the ideal place to coach youngsters new to the sport of fly fishing. Being a rainbow trout facility, fishing is allowed 12 months of the year.

Sisters will be doing it for themselves at the ladies fly-fishing day!

On Saturday the 22nd October Inland Fisheries Ireland will again be holding an introductory ladies fly fishing day in aid of Action Breast Cancer at Annamoe Trout Fishery near Glendalough in Co. Wicklow. These events are free, open to any lady and run from 10.30 to 16.00.

As ever the day will be led by the top Irish female fly-casting instructor Glenda Powell who will be ably assisted by Mark Corps of Inland Fisheries Ireland, Swords.

The mornings consist of a theoretical session in which Glenda covers areas such as equipment, safety, flies and the principles of casting.  This followed by a practical fly casting session before lunch. Lunch is provided by Brian Nally (proprietor of Annamoe Trout Fishery). Following lunch the participants get the opportunity to put their newly learned skills to use and try to catch some of the fisheries rainbow trout.

The aim of the days is to give ladies to opportunity to try fly fishing in a relaxed and supportive environment. They are always fun and trout are always caught.

Though there is no fee to take part in the course participants are requested to make a donation to Action Breast Cancer. This is the ninth course in the series which has been running since 2007. To date 130 ladies have taken part and with €7000 being donated to Action Breast Cancer.

Fly fishing for trout in Dublin!

On the River Dodder, the river has risen and is clear and conditions are now perfect for wet fly fishing.  Use gold bead pheasant tail nymphs size 12, use up to size 14 in higher water.  Bloody butchers and wet sedge patterns have worked well in the last couple of days.  A few people are fishing the River Tolka and use similar patterns as for the Dodder.

Low water levels impacting on good salmon fishing on the River Moy

Angling on the lower Moy Fishery beats has been slow of late, with only three reported for the week. Andrew Craig, N.Ireland, had two on worm while Michael Francey, N.Ireland, had a grilse on the fly. Those fisheries above the Salmon Weirs did fair somewhat better, with the Ballina Salmon Anglers’ water producing 40, and Mount Falcon just over 40, including 12 over two days for the Mark Geesink party of three from the Netherlands.

The Knockmore water, Attymass and Coolcronan all produced fish, including a grilse of 5 lb. for Philip Thomas, U.K. on a spinner. Byrne’s experienced a relatively good week, with over 20 caught, including a fine 10 lb. salmon on worm for eleven year old Owen Jackson. At Armstrong’s, over 15 were reported, including one for Bernadette Johnson, Co. Dublin, of 7 lb.

Gannon’s and the Foxford Fishery both had almost 30 salmon each, at the Foxford Fishery Sean Sheehan, Co. Louth, had three to fly. Rinanney also had a good week, with almost 40, including a 7 lb. fish for Liam Dowd, Navan.

The Cloongee Fishery produced over 5 salmon, including a grilse for Uluik Overgaard, Denmark, and one for Gary McNamara, Co. Offally. On the East Mayo Anglers water 23 salmon were caught, with 12 released. Ronnie McMorris, Co. Donegal, had two to the fly of 6 lb and 8 lb. MastanTrono Moreno, Italy, also had two (on worm) while Georg Gisselmann, Germany, had a fine salmon of 9 lb. to fly.

Anglers are reminded that from September 1st, the bag limit for salmon or sea trout over 40 cm is now one per day, and that anglers must revert to recognised catch and release methods once one fish is retained. Anglers are also reminded that the River Deel is closed for all angling as of the 1st September and will reopen on 1st June 2012.

Monthly angling report from the Delphi Fishery

Fishery Manager David McEvoy reports that the fishing for the month of August at Delphi, was typically frustrating for fishing especially in the last 10 to 12 days of the month.  The fishery which is experiencing a good year had a great run with plenty of salmon to be seen but they proved extremely difficult to catch. Sea trout were disappointing overall but there were a few high points especially towards the latter part of the month.  The weather was even difficult to describe. A tourist would say it was terrible with lots of rain but the monthly total was only 178.7 cm. or 7” which by our standards is not a lot. It also felt quite autumnal a lot of the time.  Total salmon catch for August was 82 which is actually not bad but all but 14 of these were caught by close of play on the 19th.  Fish of the month was without question Barbara Cellier’s 13 lb. 10 oz. fresh fish off Finlough on the 15th. It was taken on a Silver Stoat.  Other notable salmon catches for the month included the Beattie party, who landed 11 fish for their stay, the Ganly party landed 6 while Urs Liebundgut landed 16, the Brennan/Morris party landed 7 and William Hamilton landed 2.  Sean Moogan and his grandson Daniel Feehan landed 5 salmon to 5 lb. off Doolough and Nicholas Laverty, John Mill’s grandson landed his first ever on the fly off the Turn pool.  First ever salmon were taken by father and son team of Ron and Scott Borrie from New Zealand, Haruro Onda from Japan and Jordan Green.  Sea trout were an improvement on July which wouldn’t be hard but were still well down on last year with only 181 compared to 208 last year. Most notable catches were the Ganly party who had 36 sea trout up to 3 lb. Bernard Barton and family then had a day with 15 including one of 7.5 lb. approx. (male probably ferox) and one of 3 lb. 4 oz. approx.  This week we had Tom and Shirley Morrison, sea trout experts of old. They fished solely for sea trout and managed 22 in four days.  Total sea trout catch for the last week was 55 which is not bad considering the conditions.  Total salmon catch so far this season is 426, so hopefully we will reach the 500 mark before the end of the season.

The good season for salmon fishing continues on the River Erriff

Fishery manager Jim Stafford reports from the River Erriff on fishing up to Saturday last. Water levels varied on the river during the week with a good spate fining down on Saturday the 3rd. Robert Devriese, Dublin caught 5 fish for 3 days fishing on a Silver Cascade and Shrimp Fly. Tobias Stern, Austria, a regular annual overseas rod on the Erriff caught 7 for the week – mainly on various Cascades and Shrimp patterns. Dr. John Casey, Clifden caught 3 in 1 day on a Collie Dog in Nee’s Run and the Colonel’s Pool on Beat 6. Conor O’Leary, Dublin returned one of 6 lb. taken on a Daddy in Yellow Banks on Beat 5.  Patrick Gorman, Cong had 2 in a morning’s fishing on Beat 9. Enda Kenny, Enfield, Co. Meath caught a sparkling fresh grilse in the Coronation Pool on a Shadow Cascade. Rene Boutonnet, France, another annual overseas visitor to the Erriff caught 5 and 1 good sea trout and lost several more good fish for the week – Rene caught 3 salmon in one day in the Upper Garden Pool on a Shrimp Fly.  It was a red letter day for Derek Killeen, Dublin who caught his first ever salmon and went on to catch another 2 – all fish were taken on a Claret Dabbler on Yellow Banks on Beat 5. Richard and Hugh Maguire had one each taken on a Silver Stoat and Cascade in the Sally Pool on Beat 7. Local angler Stuart Fleming and Paddy Lynch, Dublin caught six brown trout on Derrintin Lough in an afternoon.  The catch for the week was 28 salmon (16 released) and 9 sea trout which includes 1 salmon and 4 sea trout from Tawnyard Lough.  At the time of writing the report there is a massive spate of 2.1 meters so water levels will be good for the next number of days

Very good salmon fishing reported from Lough Inagh

salmon

Photo: The record-breaking 86th fish was landed by ghillie Ulrich Treusch

Fishery manager Colin Folan reports from Lough Inagh, that the previous season record of 85 salmon has been smashed in style, with 8 fish landed by 5 rods on Monday to bring the season total so far to 91 salmon. The record-breaking 86th fish was landed by ghillie Ulrich Treusch, a 6 lb. fish taken at the Glendallogh Butts on a Cascade. It was Ulrich’s second fish of the day, having earlier caught and released a 7 lb. fish at Greenpoint. Colin himself had a fish from Corloo on a Stoats Tail, weighing 6 lb. Matt Davy (Dublin), caught his personal best fish yesterday, weighing 7.75 lb. from The Derryclare Butts on a Claret Shrimp. Water levels have risen dramatically now on Inagh, and good fishing is expected for the coming week, when it is possible the magic 100 fish barrier may be broken for the first time.
