Early flurry sees Francis dominate West Cork competition

West Cork & District SAC held their latest club competition last weekend, with yet another great report shared with us…

Garrylucas was the venue for our latest club fixture. The fishing on the night was very slow for most of us with the weed not helping the situation, however Troy Francis put on an exhibition on the night beating everyone well with 9 fish including a 57cm bass and a 40cm flounder to win the pools and the competition.
Most of Troy’s fish came in the first 2 hours of the match and he spent the next 2 hours watching the RTE player on his phone catching up on Fair City and I’m a celebrity while the rest of us struggled to catch up!

The club was formed on march 19th 2009, in the small picturesque harbour town of  Kinsale County Cork. We’re an inclusive club, this can be seen in our membership profile; from anglers who are new to match fishing all the way up to members of the Irish World Shore Team 2010, two of which are in the club! The club holds circa 10 competitions per year, members are encouraged to practice a catch and release policy in the interests of conservation. First time angler hits the jackpot with Fish Tales

Chris Scally of Fish Tales Guideing reports on a recent trip out with a novice angler:

It was a fresh start to Sunday, to say the least, but that didn’t stop Wendell Cruz Junior from making the trip down for his first-ever taste of pike fishing. Wendell has been living in Ireland for 20 years but has never given Irish pike fishing a go.
The temperatures had dropped significantly in recent days, so we opted to leave the lure rods in the van, and all the deadbait rods were loaded.
Roach under a float was on the menu today, and the pike loved it…
We managed to land nine pike altogether, with the biggest being 97cm and 17lb4, which is an impressive fish for a first-time angler. Wendell also managed to boat a few perch, making it a memorable day on the lake for him.

How’s the Fishing?

Had a great evening with Trim Athboy and District Angling Assocation on Friday. We looked at Trout behaviour in rivers, approaching the river and different methods of fly-fishing – nymphing, dry dropper and wet fly. Great evening had by all. If there are any other clubs out there who would like an evening like this, get in touch.

Piscari Travels

This year sees Piscari-fly’s Mark with his team The Irish Slayers, Darius and Rodger head to the Welsh Dee for the Hanak European Grayling Festival. River conditions are looking good with the river dropping nicely. Wishing all Irish competitors and all competitors the best of luck. It should be a great competition. Piscari Venator Nymphing Rod

We are delighted and very excited to announce we are adding a nymphing rod to the Piscari brand. We have been working on this for some time and the first samples arrived in the other day. Still have a few tweaks to work out but really looking forward to having this on the market next season.

Pollack fishing continues in Galway Bay

Charter boat fishing continues around the coastline when weather windows permit, and John Fleming, skipper of the Brazen Hussy in Galway Bay, has been out this week. Taking advantage of some calmer weather to fish some reef marks.

A lot of fish were showing on the sounder but fishing started off slow. It came good for a while, with a nice run of fish coming aboard, but mostly, it was nice just to be back out again!

A regular day is between 9am- 6pm from either Rossaveal, Spiddal or Galway depending on species being sought after. Fishing on the inshore reefs for pollock, cod, ling, wrasse, conger eel and mackerel can be reached in 10 minutes from departure, while our offshore reef marks are within 45 minutes of departure. Our ground fishing for tope, spurdog, ray, bullhuss, turbot, plaice and the giant common skate can all be reached within the hour which ensures the most amount of time is spent fishing.
The shark season usually starts at the end of June and runs into late October, this is the ultimate angling adrenaline rush with these hard fighting blue and porbeagle sharks all being tagged and released safely.

VIDEO: Cod Fishing in the Shannon Estuary

James Raymond is no stranger to these reports, and he is back with another great video for his Irish Angling Adventures channel. This winter, James is planning to target cod in the Shannon Estuary. He says “The Shannon Estuary is well known for its fine stocks of Thornback ray and conger but not many people tend to fish it during the winter for some cod.”

This video is the first in a series James plans to make over the winter, and we will be following closely to see how he gets on. Sharing tips on choosing a venue, tide state, bait preparation and where to cast, sea anglers are sure to learn plenty.

111 Pike for Whitewood Pike Angling Club at recent league outing

Members of Whitewood Pike Angling Club headed up to a lake venue in Co. Monaghan for the fourth round of their club league last weekend. And it proved to be a very busy day, as they found the pike to be feeding strongly, leading to some great bags.

A total of 111 pike were landed including three doubles, best being 14lb. There were 7 bags of 30lb or more and plenty of 20lb bags which is pretty good going by any standards.

Huge turnout for Newbridge Pike Anglers open competition

A huge turnout of 104 adult and 20 junior anglers headed to Co. Wicklow for last Sunday’s open competition hosted by Newbridge & District Pike Anglers. The venue was Poulaphouca Lake (aka Blessington), a fishery that can be hard work but is capable of throwing up a good stamp of fish from time to time.

After check-in, anglers dispersed around the lake, ready for the ‘rods in’ at 9am, and the early reports were of fish being caught steadily. Midday saw a slump in takes, before the last couple of hours saw the fish come on the feed again.

At the 4pm cut-off, a total of 24 fish had been registered, not too bad for what can be a slow enough venue. The fish of the day went to Keiron Cummins with a good double of 17.08.

The competitors headed to a local pub, where the prizegiving took place, including plenty of prizes for the junior anglers. So, all in all it was a great achievement to get so many anglers out fishing at this time of year so credit to the organisers, sponsors and of course competitors who made the day a great success.

Leinster Shore League goes down to the wire

South Shore SAC posted a rundown of the recent Leinster Shore League match:

38 anglers from Leinster-based sea angling clubs turned out for the penultimate Leinster League match of the year at Kilgorman last Sunday. Expectations were high as most east coast venues had been fishing very well in the days running up to the match, with numerous species showing up along the coast.

But, as you might expect, when the points were on the table, the fish decided to have an off day, leaving anglers to scratch around for small flats and the odd whiting in the early stages of the match. With the fishing slow, all hopes rested on the evening, as the advent of darkness often brings fish closer to shore where they can be picked off more easily.

While the dusk did see an improvement in catches, it wasn’t the blitz that anglers were hoping for, but that meant it was in the balance till rods in, as a decent fish could easily turn the tables for any angler in contention. In Zone A, a hotly fought battle saw Karl Fogarty edge out brother Ciaran to the top spot. Zone B was won by Gary Foster, and his bag of 19 fish was the best on the day winning him first prize overall.

With one round left to go, three anglers are in with a chance of winning the league, so it’s all down to the final event of the season on 30th Dec in Kilcoole.

Limerick County Pike Anglers get back on home turf

The Limerick County Pike Anglers were back on home turf for the latest leg of their league as subsiding water levels enabled them to fish on the River Shannon for the first time in a while. 16 anglers hit the banks for the excursion, including a couple of new members on their first outing. And one of those newbies hit the banks running with a nice 6lb fish that was landed in no time at all. Then there was a double hook-up a little way down the bank, and the lads had obviously found a few fish on the feed. All three fish were in or around the 6lb mark, so the competition was tight.

Fishing was steady during the day, with an odd fish being landed and others lost at the net, but one angler kept his foot on the gas as Johann Jordan proved to be the most consistent angler, amassing a total of 25lb 13oz, well ahead of Tommy in second place with 9lb. Junior angler Thomas broke his PB with a fine fish of 12lb to make the day a memorable one for him.

Monasterevin & Fisherstown Anglers Open ‘Fur & Feather’ Match on Dec 10th

The Monasterevin & Fisherstown Anglers are holding an open competition on Dec 10th and non club members are welcome. It’s a Fur & Feather event, and despite fishing for well over 40 years, I had to turn to Google to explain that one.

So… it’s an event where something is given out to all those who attend, and the idea is you bring a prize along and everyone goes home with something. The name originates from the fact that such events were held around Christmas, when the hunting season was in full swing, and so fur (rabbit or hare) and feather (game birds) were often given away. So that’s your Thursday trivia.
