Exciting bluefin tuna season came to a close

Last Sunday marked the the end of this year’s bluefin tuna season. Ewings Sea Angling and Boat Charters fishing out of Rosses Point, Co. Sligo report on their year. Read their detailed report below…
“Last Sunday marked the end of the bluefin tuna season and we are busy washing down rigs and gear, sharpening, painting hooks and servicing the reels and equipment for next season! The second half of the season was fantastic with multiple fish taken on every trip and loads of smaller fish about feeding hard on the big sprat shoals in the bay, with a nice mix of some bigger fish through them. We didn’t get out much in November due to weather and other commitments but again there were plenty of fish around which is promising well for next season again. We have lots more tricks on the way for next year and are currently getting two more thrasher standup rods being built to our specifications by @mikes custom rods Waterford and are really looking forward to getting a bend in them. We have too many pictures on our phone to put up all of them but here’s a couple of snaps of some of October catches! Thanks again to everyone for coming out!”
Killybegs Fishing Trips also had a final go at the tuna last weekend…
“2nd last day of the bluefin tuna season, and things were much quieter today. It was a really nice day at sea, not as much signs around today, but managed one smaller tuna at 130lb, which Paul fought on the stand up gear. We did lose another fish late on in the day but that’s fishing. However, looking forward to next year’s bluefin season in Donegal Bay!”

Quality pike for Michael with Angling Services Ireland

Bodo Funke of Angling Services Ireland reports from the Boyle area…

Enjoyed a super nice three days with frequent guest Michael from Germany! Over the three days the pike were a little harder to find than in previous weeks. This time, however, it was more quality than quantity for Michael, who is a dedicated lure angler…no huge numbers but some quality fish over or close to the meter mark, biggest 108cm! Not too bad for a three day trip!

Nice one for Michael
Happy client = happy guide
Another fine Boyle Esox

Big shout out and Thank you to my good friend Brendan Sharkey of Predator Fishing Ireland who came up trumps when I was badly stuck! Much appreciated!!!

Ireland on the Fly: From mayfly on Corrib to trout madness in Montana with Mike Cosgrave

Mike Cosgrave

On this week’s episode of Ireland on the Fly, Daire and Tom are joined by Mike Cosgrave, the former coach and centre for Connacht who is also a passionate fly angler and who fished Corrib and Mask as a kid growing up.

While he still fishes the Western Loughs, Mike’s other great love is Montana.  He has fished the fly fishing spiritual home of America over a dozen times and has some incredible stories about hiking into the wilderness, catching trout to 10lbs and even fishing the famous Blackfoot river from A River Runs Through It.

Balancing your lures – great tips from L’ile Verte

A very short video this week from Norbert Renaud of L’ile Verte Pike Fishing Lodge on how to better balance your pike fishing lures – or any other lure for that matter – with the addition of stick on weighted strips.

Unlike some pike anglers, Norbert doesn’t like adding weight to the treble hook split rings as they may interfere with the actual hooking of fish.

Anyway – Norbert, who always has great tips and innovative solutions to his fishing problems –  will explain all….

Pike strikes twice for Fitz from Meath

On a recent trip to Lough Ree, avid pike angler Barry ‘Fitz’ Fitzpatrick from Meath had a surprise capture.

Fitz likes to get to his chosen venue early, often tackling up his rigs before first light. This time though, he had to check out a couple of different options before choosing the venue best suited to the conditions on the day.

Upon arrival at his chosen spot, he set up his dead bait rig and cast out one of Galway Bay’s finest mackerel into a likely pike holding area before kicking back and catching up with his fishing partners on the day, Daragh and Dave.

It wasn’t long before Fitz had a run, and he tightened into a fish – a hard fighting, streamlined 14lb pike landed just short of 11am. After a quick photo, the fish was carefully released and the trio carried on fishing, with another jack or two keeping them busy during the morning session before things went quiet.

First capture

In the afternoon it looked like the fish had had enough altogether but then, at nearly 3pm, Fitz had another strong run on the mackerel. Again, he tightened into the fish and again the fish fought hard but came to the net before too long. This pike had a very familiar look to it, and after careful examination of the markings along its flank, it was clear that it was the same 14lb fish that took the bait earlier in the day!

The recapture

Pike can feed voraciously when they are hungry and this fish was proof of that – twice falling to a mackerel dead bait in the space of four hours! Fitz always takes great care when playing, landing and returning his pike, so this one was none the worse off after the first capture, going back on the feed in no time.

No matter it’s November… Wicklow Boat Charters still reeling them in

By the time we get to November, many of our charter fleet will have hauled anchor on the fishing season, leaving the wind, rain and cold until next year. Not so at Wicklow Boat Charters, as Kit Dunne seizes on any break in the weather to get amongst the fish.

November Tope

Last week he took a trip out to the deeps in search of Spurs, and while he got the quantity he was looking for (over 60 fish) he didn’t quite get the quality, as all were the wrong side of a meter.

 A frisky Huss, always a handful…

Later in the week, he fished closer in, and anglers were rewarded with some fine fishing given the time of year. Eight Bullhuss to 110cm, along with a couple of decent tope to 153cm shows that the fish are still there despite the fact it’s nearly Xmas…

Leinster Pike Anglers endure a drenching, but at least the fishing was good!

The Leinster Pike Anglers held the third leg of their winter league in some very wet weather at the weekend. But anglers can put up with a bit of rain as long as the fish are biting, and luckily for them, that was the case.

They chose to fish in Co. Cavan on five different lakes adjacent to each other, giving anglers the choice to sit and wait it out, or to venue hop in the hope of finding a few hotspots. It seems made the most of the opportunity to cover multiple waters, as there were plenty of pike caught on the day, with the top three anglers catching 31 pike between them while their weights were only separated by 8oz.

Results as follows:
1st….Luke O Ciaran 9 fish for 28lb 1oz
2nd….Marty Lawlor 8 fish for 27lb 15oz
3rd….Jan Rutkowski 14 fish for 27lb 9oz
Sean O’Brien took the heaviest fish prize with a nice double of 15lb 13oz.

Limerick pike anglers (almost) draw blank in the midlands…

All pike anglers will be familiar with those days where, for whatever reason, the pike are lethargic and don’t want to feed. There are any amount of theories as to why this happens: too much fresh water, too little oxygen in the water, too cold, too sunny, high, pressure, low pressure, you name it…

Such thoughts were probably far from the minds if the 15 members of the Limerick County Pike Angling Association as they headed up the country to a midlands canal venue for the latest round of their club competition. But on the journey, they couldn’t fail to notice the pools of water in every field they passed, and the ‘too much water’ theory probably crossed their minds.

Flat calm canal

But, within minutes of the off, Sam Brown was into a fish, which turned out to be a jack of circa 3.5lb, and so things looked like they might pan out well for the day. Sadly, that was not the case, and for much of the day, it looked like Sam might win all the prizes with that single fish.

First fish of the day

But midway through the day, another angler got on the cards as Mike O’Donoghue landed a pike of just over 6lb. Unfortunately, that was it for the day, and the only other things caught were a few lures and floats snagged in anglers’ lines. So a tough day (out of) the office for the Limerick crew, but I’m sure they’ll be back on the banks before long.

Second, and final fish of the day…

At least someone got a new (second hand) lure!
