Junior fundraiser in Killala sees good fishing

Tom Keal on his way to a zone win.

Killala Boat Club held a very successful fundraising competition for the Irish Youth and Junior shore teams at the weekend, fishing the CBI beach outside Killala. Fishing was good, with the many competitors enjoying good sport and banter, and the BBQ held afterwards in Gilvarrys was a great success.

Galway BAY SAC anglers featured well in the prizes, with Conor Murray on winning the senior section. Their own young internatioal angler Tom Keal also won a section prize. Local angler and future star Sally Gilvarry won the junior section.

Sharking provides good sport in Clare

Porbeagle shark

Skipper Luke Aston had some regular guests staying last week, and they enjoyed a mix of fishing offshore and targeting predators in the estuary too. Offshore they found some toothy predators too, with 2 porbeagle sharks and a few small blue sharks landed. Although they had seen some signs of tuna feeding, when they did go looking for them they were not to be found.

Fish on!

Due to weather they spent their last day inside the estuary, with shelter from a fresh NW wind. Although the fishing was slow at times, the fish seemed to turn on at times and Detlef and Werner had a few nice fish each.

Pike to 110cm for the Murray fly in the midlands

with his 110cm fly-caught pike

Mick Flanagan, of Midlands Angling and Shooting, teamed up with old pal Jimmy Murray this week for some pike fishing on lure and fly. Jimmy, who was home from New York, loves to fly fish for pike and hadn’t shared a boat with Mick in years.

One of Jimmy’s own tyings

The pike were hard going, often coming short or missing the lures altogether, but Jimmy persevered and nailed a super 110cm fish as well as hooking a few others. Mick had no such luck on his new Cali Glide Lure that came from across the Atlantic, but has no doubts that it will nab a few fish on another day!

The river Laune - salmon fishing in a beautiful setting...

For the week ended 27 august there was 1 salmon reported. the fish was taken from Johnson’s Fishery, River Laune, weighing 8lbs landed on the fly – water levels low.

Another very quiet week on the Munster Blackwater

The Blackwater was still running a little higher than normal for time of year and a slight peaty tinge still present as of 27 August.

Despite the conditions salmon angling remains very poor throughout the system – no reports of catches.

Poor salmon fishing reported from Bandon and West Cork

River Bandon
Closing day on the Bandon

Fishing has been slow the last week. Fish not taking, despite water levels having been up with the rainfall we have had and the arrival of some late fish into our systems.

Ouvane and the Mealagh are seeing small numbers being caught.

Bandon River is similarly slow. Reports suggest very few fish caught.

Monasterevin Anglers hold inaugural pairs event

The winning pair: Conor Browne and Ritchie Keegan

The festival attracted 30 anglers who fished various canal sections around the town. Fishing was a bit slower than expected, and anglers had to work hard for their fish, but there were some decent fish caught, including a fine bream of 4lb 6oz for Richie Keegan, which won the heaviest fish of the festival.

Greystones anglers come up trumps at Tope Festival

Super east coast tope

Greystones Ridge Angling Club held their annual Tope festival last weekend, which attracted small-boat anglers from around the country to the east coast venue. Fished over two days, the first day out was hampered by strong winds, which meant restrictions on the areas to be fished. Despite this, there were a few good fish caught, including three to specimen size.

Day two saw the weather improve considerably, and boats could now travel offshore to more productive grounds. To help things along, mackerel were abundant close to the harbour, so fresh bait wasn’t an issue. All this meant that the fishing was much more eventful, and a total of 55 fish were brought to the boat, making it a hectic day for the stewards. When all was said and done, Padraic Clear came in with the longest tope, a fine specimen of 170.5cm. Meanwhile, Sean Byrne and Stephen Hanway finished neck and neck for landing the most tope, each bringing 11 to the boat, with Sean winning the prize as he had a better combined total length.

Great first pike angling experience for pair from Argentina

Damien Culliney from Anglers Paradise reports on some recent good fishing on Lough Derg:

I had Bjorn and Juan out from Argentina for their first pike fishing experience recently, so after a bit of discussion we decided to fish lough Derg. The day was a typical Irish day of 4 seasons, but the fishing was fantastic, with fourteen takes through the day showing that the fish are definitely becoming active again after the summer months. Juan’s first Irish pike was 87cm, then Bjorn had a 91 cm too. Both were PB’s for the lads so they were over the moon. And the fish just kept coming with a run of 90cm + fish and we finished the day with a beautiful fish of 106 cm. Great fishing, and the lads are already looking forward too our next trip.
