Good fishing in Shannon Estuary for anglers on the Clare Dragoon

Skipper Luke Aston says having the Shannon Estuary on the doorstep is a great boon, especially when weather conditions don’t suit getting out to the open sea. Having the mackerel move in this week certainly helped with bait, and the fishing, with some nice fish caught in the estuary. Fish caught included thornback ray, bull huss, the ubiquitous doggies and a couple of lively tope. Prior to that, offshore fishing produced great fishing on long drifts over the reefs out west.

Salmon catches on the increase on the Moy

Angling Report week ending 25/0623

Despite continuing warm weather and little rain, a few showers early and at the end of last week coupled with cooler nights improved catch numbers on the whole system quite significantly. In total 217 salmon were reported caught, with the vast majority of those salmon being grilse. This seems to be a good indicator that the grilse run has started. Water levels at Ballylahan Bridge only slightly rose on Tuesday and Saturday night but were still at low water level.

The Moy Fishery reopened on Tuesday 20th, after being closed due to elevated water temperatures and recorded a total of 50 salmon for the week. Of this, the Ridge Pool produced 33 salmon, the Cathedral Beat produced 13 salmon and the Weir Pool produced 4 salmon. Of those 50 salmon, 16 were released.

The first pink salmon of 2023 was also caught on the Ridge Pool. Anglers, or the public, should report encounters with pink salmon to IFI’s 24/7 phone number, 0818 34 74 24, or via [email protected]

Anglers who catch pink salmon are also asked to carry out the following actions:

  • Photograph the fish
  • Retain the salmon and don’t put it back into the water (even in rivers only open for catch-and-release angling).
  • Record the date and location of capture, and the length/weight of the fish.
  • Tag the fish and present it to IFI staff, and a new tag will be issued to replace the tag used.

The nearest local IFI staff will arrange collection of the fish for further examination.

Ballina Salmon Anglers reported 4 salmon for the week, weighing 6lbs, 5lbs, 3lbs and 3lbs.

Mount Falcon reported 3 fish. Two of those were caught spinning (4.5lbs and 3.5 lbs) and one on the worm (4lbs).

Knockmore Salmon Anglers recorded 4 salmon. The best fish weighed 7lbs and was caught on the prawn.

Coolcronan Fishery reported 6 salmon for the week. All 6 were grilse and were caught on prawn, spinner, bubble and fly.

Armstrong Fishery recorded 12 fish, 1 springer and 11 grilse. 8 salmon were caught on bubble and fly, 2 on the spinner and 2 on the worm.

Gannon’s Fishery reported 2 salmon weighing 5lbs and 4.5lbs respectively. One was caught on bubble and fly and one on the worm.

Foxford Salmon Anglers had 37 salmon for the week mostly caught on bubble and fly and the prawn.

Local reports from the Foxford Rocks Fishery suggest that 12 salmon were caught, mostly on bubble and fly.

The Foxford Fishery recorded 36 salmon caught for the week, all of them grilse up to 6lbs.

Cloongee Fishery reported 20 salmon for the week, with 13 of those being released.

East Mayo Anglers reported 31 salmon for the week, 9 of which were released. The best fish weighed 7 lbs. while the majority was in the 2.5lbs to 5lbs range. The most successful methods were fly and worm.

 

Leo Lynch lands 135kg in Oaklands Summer League match

Oaklands reports on the latest round of their Summer League where some huge weights were recorded…

25 June: An eventful day today at Oakland’s for the latest round of the summer league.
The match was stopped briefly after 1 hour 20 minutes because of thunder and lightning.
That seemed to turn on the fish with some very good weights at the all in.

A very big well done to Leo Lynch for bagging a massive 135kg from peg 35 just short of the 300lb mark which he would have done if he hadn’t went over on 2 nets.

Second in that section was Kirean Reeves with 77.020kg and 3rd was Paul Mansbridge with 55.520kg.

The other section was a closer encounter with only 7kg between the top 3 with Ronan Minogue coming out on top with 84.490 kg close behind was John Browne with 82.410kg and Dave Minogue in third with 77.417kg.

Big thanks the 27 lads that fished, looking foward to seeing most you at the Dunbrody in a couple of weeks.

18kg wins round two of Feedermasters Comp on Muckno

Lough Muckno hosted round two of this year’s Feedermasters competition last week as four qualifying places were up for grabs on the day. 42 anglers lined up at the start of the day, spread across a few different sections and it was White Island that fished best on the day, producing four of the top five weights.

Rimantas Kondracas landed a fine bag of 18kg to take the top spot, while Graham Worley came second on 14kg. Third place went to Richard Pratt on 11kg while the final qualifier place went to Philip Jackson.

Salmon fishing picks up in Galway

Fishing the Galway Weir, June 21 2023

Daithi Ryan reports from the Galway Fishery, where following a closure due to high temperatures, the fishery reopened on the 19th of June. Grilse have been running the river in better numbers every day since. Check out the video below shot at the weir this week.

Daithi reports that since the reopening fishing has been very productive, with 56 salmon landed. The most successful method has been the fly, with 40 caught on the Ffy and 16 caught on the prawn. The most successful fly has been the Haugur, with it accounting for a lot of the fish.

The grilse so far have been good quality with the majority averaging about 5lbs. On the 21st Denis Heffernan landed a stunning fish of 9lbs on the fly and shortly after landed another one of 4lbs, also on fly.

On the 23rd Brendan O’Connor landed an excellent fish of 12.1lbs fresh off the tide also on the fly. On the 28th Ray Drennan landed 2 beautiful grilse within a very short space of time one of 6lbs and the other just over 5lbs.

Long-awaited rain brings sport to the Erriff

Donavin Brinklow reports from the River Erriff, where a long dry spell was broken by several floods in the last few days. Fresh water and lower temperatures brought salmon into the river, and anglers have been enjoying good sport this week.

 

25th June

J. Delaney landed salmon of 3lbs, 3.5lbs and 6.5lbs on Beat 9 in the Middle Garden Pool and Falls Pool using a Willie Gunn. Billy Moylan landed a 2.5lbs sea trout in the Lower Garden Pool on an Ally’s shrimp. S Prestley landed a 7.5lbs salmon on Beat 5 – Glenacally Pool – on a Delphi Dog. C. Reynolds landed a 3lbs, 4lbs and 3.5lbs salmon on Beat 9. P. Coyne landed a 3lbs and a 4lbs salmon in the Falls Pool and a 4.5lbs salmon in the Middle Garden Pool on Beat 9 using an Ally’s shrimp.

C. O’Leary had a great day, landng a 3.5lbs salmon in the Middle Garden, a 4lbs salmon in the Falls Pool and a 4lbs salmon in the Lower Garden Pool, and a 5lbs fish in the Sea Pool on Beat 9 using a Sunray Shadow.

 

27th June

E. McCarthy landed a 5lbs salmon and a 0.5lbs sea trout in the Sea Pool, and a 3.5lbs salmon in the Falls Pool on Beat 9 using a Cascade. M. Witort landed a 3lbs salmon on Beat 6 using a Cascade. D. Flynn landed a 5lbs salmon on Beat 7. S. Fleming landed a 3.4 lbs salmon on Beat 5 on an orange shrimp. J O’Neill landed a 7lbs salmon on Beat 8 using an Ally’s shrimp. G. Merrick landed a 5lbs salmon on Beat 9 with a Collie Dog. E. Ledesma landed a 6lbs salmon on Beat 4 Cottage Pool. V. Henry landed a 5 lbs salmon on Beat 9 using a Willie Gunn.

 

28th June

P. Coyne landed a 4.5lbs salmon in the Bridge Pool on Beat 9 using an orange shrimp. G. Merrick landed a 4lbs salmon on Beat 9 also with an orange shrimp.

The Erriff System is comprised of the Erriff River and the two small loughs of Tawnyard and Derrintin. The River Erriff is one of the premier salmon fishing rivers in Ireland. A spate river, it is characterised by lively streams and deep fish-holding pools. It has 8 miles of prime angling water, divided into 9 beats. Beats are un-crowded with only two rods on most and a maximum of 3 sometimes. Angling is rotated on a daily basis.

Leinster anglers brave storm for chance to fish in Inter-Pro’s

The Leinster Coarse Fishing Federation fished the last leg of their 2022/23 Leinster league last week on the Royal Canal. The thunder and lightning sent anglers to their cars for spells for safety reasons, but after the storm had passed, some great fishing for Roach, Rudd, Perch, Bream, Tench and Pike was had.

Conor Browne put in an all star performance to cruise to the top of the rankings on the day. The top 10 Anglers from the 12 leg League will make up the team that will do battle in the Inter-Pros next September.

Water levels up and salmon showing on Roughty, Maine, Laune and lake

The rains that fell last week improved the fishing in a few rivers across Kerry last week.

At Kenmare the rivers were up and a few salmon were reported caught, but main run is still to arrive. Best fish was  11lbs salmon from the Roughty.

The levels since Sunday are rising slowly, the Maine has shown some sea trout, and a few grilse, the water is holding steady and coloured.

The Laune has shown good water since Tuesday with some grilse caught, angling has been quiet.

Lough Leane is carrying plenty of anglers with reports of some decent spring fish still.

Another quiet week on the Munster Blackwater, lowest reaches only getting fish

It was a quiet enough week on the Munser Blackwater once more – no major changes in fortunes for the week to 25 June.

It was much the same as the previous week with salmon angling on the Blackwater and tributaries being extremely poor with the only salmon now being recorded coming from the Cappoquin area, which shows up approximately 2-3 Salmon per day to large numbers of anglers.

Trout angling is by now in the main undertaken during evenings between 9 pm and midnight, but catch records are sparse from this sector.

Blackwater Salmon and Trout Fishery

Blackwater Salmon and Trout Fishery control a number of beats of the Munster Blackwater. The Ballyduff Bridge beat is almost a mile long offering a huge variety of water and is particularly suited to fly fishing.
