Enjoyable late winter fishing and first bass of the year for Killybegs Mariners

The settled weather allowed for some enjoyable late winter fishing for Killybegs Mariners. Read their report below…

The Mariners crew had plenty of sea trout, flounders, coleys and turbot earlier in the week, while two days ago the first two bass of the year were landed.

With no league outing this week the club group chat organised a bit of fun tenner a rod longest flattie competition on a beautiful night out after a week of big seas.
Plenty of fish on the take with doubles and trebles of trout and flounders for the gang of 9 anglers and in the end the €90 was shared at €45 each for Aaron Vambeck and Chris Whyte with 26cm flounders each.

Another quiet week on Lough Currane

Vincent Appleby reports on another quiet week for anglers fishing Lough Currane…

8/2/2023 My Noble Salmon were all quiet this day as were the Currane anglers. Wind SW and variable fresh and overcast all day.

9/2/2023 Mr. Eric Jouen of Waterville boats and at [email protected]  reports that there were three boats out and their reels were all silent this day. Wind SE and veered SW light with reasonable cloud cover.

10/2/2023 Mr. Eric Jouen of Waterville Boats and at [email protected] reports just two boats out and all quiet on the SW front, just the odd Kelt caught. Wind SW light and overcast.

11/2/2023 There were six boats out manipulating their lures and by all accounts just the odd Kelt was caught. Wind South light and overcast.

12/2/2023 The Currane anglers were all quiet this day. Wind S at times SE light with good cloud cover. Just for the record to all you Currane anglers remember as from tomorrow there is a good chance of a good Salmon being caught this week and especially on the 17th. Good Luck to all.

Waterville house and the Butler Pool
Waterville House flies its flag at half mast today

13/2/2023 I start this week on a sad note on the passing of Mr. Dan McGillicuddy RIP and Dan may not have been a Gillie but he knew every angle of Salmon and Sea Trout fishing. In the sixty’s He worked in the Finglas Hatchery, Waterville Golf Club and Waterville House. On a personal note, I have one good fishing story of Mr. Dan McGillicuddy RIP. When Dan was in his teens he was watching an angler on The Butler Pool playing a cracker of a Salmon and shouting for his Ghillie to come and gaff his fish. The Ghillie was nowhere to be seen so Dan ran down and gaffed the Salmon with one swipe of the Gaff and left the angler dumfounded with his speed. So on behalf of the Currane Anglers  all the good people of Caherdaniel, Waterville and all of Kerry and our Sincere Sympathies to all of Dan’s family.

14/2/2023 We start with yesterday’s manipulations it was all quiet on all fronts. Now back to today Lough Currane was on the wild side with a strong SSE wind blowing with gusts up to 76 Km/h average wind speed was 41 Km/h. and overcast all day.

15/2/2023 The Currane anglers were all quiet on all fronts. Wind SW and veered SSW fresh to strong with strong gusts up to 61 Km/h and overcast  followed by heavy rain this afternoon.

FLEKSI

A new online survey has been developed by IFI for the Currane catchment to gather anglers’ knowledge – the survey method called FLEKSI was developed by IFI to help give an insight into the status of the fishery. Currane Anglers are needed for Citizen Science survey to examine fish stocks

Brief trip to the deep gets a specimen spur for Wicklow Boats

Kit Dunne from Wicklow Boat Charters found the time for a brief trip to a deep water mark in chase of spurdog last Sunday. The spurs certainly were not present in packs, but one angler managed to land a specimen-sized spur as Tadgh Nealon came up trumps with a fish measuring circa 113cm.

The other anglers onboard also managed to land a few spurs, but none over the magic 105cm and it was good to see a thornback ray also put in an appearance.

Opening Day Gold on Corrib

Ian Turner with a beautifui Corrib ferox caught on opening day of the 2023 season

For many fishermen, today marks the end of winter, and the first day of spring. It is Opening Day on the big western loughs, and anglers are emerging from hibernation, blinking in the light of a new season, and hoping this will be a memorable one!

It is already memorable for one angler, Ian Turner, who was out with his friend, fishing guide Jasper Mathews of Wild Atlantic Angling Experiences. Trolling plugs, Ian hooked and boated a fine 9,8lbs ferox trout, a beautiful Corrib fish. The fish was quickly photographed before being returned to the water. Well done Ian and Jasper!

The lads are back out on the lake again after the traditional island lunch, and I’m sure have been joined by many more. We hope to bring you more reports from the lough as we get them, and will be delighted to hear from you if you were out.

Speaking of lunch on the island, the Cornamona Anglers did it in style, check out the pics below. (Warning: Don’t scroll down if you’re hungry!)

It’s not all about the fishing! A shared meal and good craic makes opening day memories too.

South Shore SAC find conditions ‘too good’ to catch…

Last Sunday, South Shore SAC headed to the north beach in Wicklow for the second round of their master anglers series. Weather was good, with a southerly wind that made conditions nice, well, for all bar those anglers in the downwind vicinity of Wicklow sewage works…

In fact, it turned out that conditions were ‘too good’ for the time of year, as the quiet seas meant that the whiting were bite shy, and big numbers were not going to feature. Many anglers struggled to catch anything of countable size, but Des Farrelly, fishing in Zone A, managed to winkle them out when many others fell short, and he landed 12 to come top of the rankings on the day.

Small whiting were the order of the day

Ian Daly, fishing in Zone B, also managed to outfish those around him, landing 8 fish to win his zone, while Evan Mason won the junior section with 4 fish. Full report on the South Shore SAC Facebook page.

Limerick Pike Anglers make most of trip to Castleconnell

Castleconnell is one of the famous old salmon fisheries in Ireland, but last week it was opened up for the Limerick County Pike Anglers to hold the second leg of their league. Anglers were eager to make the most of this rare opportunity, with many arriving well before first cast to find the water levels to be perfect and the weather to be just right.

It took half an hour for the first shout to go around that anglers were starting to catch and catches remained consistent for the rest of the day. There were no big bruisers landed, but plenty of smaller pike kept the anglers interested and, in the end, Tommy Coffee topped the table with a bag of 23lb 14oz.

LCPAA are a very active club and have decided to open their doors to new members for 2023, with both adults and juniors welcome. Anyone interested should get in touch via their Facebook page. Please fish in a sustainable manner

Cork Sea Angling Club report on their first competition of 2023…

Cork Sea Angling Club had their first competition of the year at the weekend. We also started our Club species hunt tonight and had over 12 different species caught which was brilliant. The event was fished in Cobh and 16 Anglers turned out for a fantastic evening. Weather was perfect, not too cold and the walkway was quite busy with walkers.

The competition was fished from 16:00 to 21:00 on an incoming tide. It was a tough night, not many fish biting but over all with the species hunts it was great fun with over 55 fish caught.

Over all winner was Eric Gosnell with 3 fish, 2 whiting and 1 dog. 2nd was Kevin Mcg with 3 whiting. 3rd Colin O’Sullivan with two whiting. 4th Chris O Connell with 1 whiting. 5th Alan O’Dowling, 1 whiting and 6th was Darren Keane with 1 whiting.

In the species hunt we had Donal Domney, Alan O’Dowling and Pawel Kurowski both ending the night on 5 species.

We also welcomed a few of our new members to our club, Anthony Ozzie Austin, George O’Hara, Darren Keane and also Jason Santry. Hope to see you at the next competition Jason.

Looking forward to the next competition on the 25th of February in Garyvoe Beach.
