This Friday, at 7pm (8pm French time!), you can join Norbert Renaud of L’ile Verte Pike Fishing Lodge for his Friday night livestream where chat, beers and flies are the focus of the evening.

For the uninitiated, Norbert is a French fishing guide who specialises in catching hard fighting Irish pike in his home waters around Killeshandra in Cavan.

Norbert has some great videos up on his YouTube channel, including gear reviews, fly tying and putting his money where his mouth is by catching some great Irish pike on the fly from his drift boat or float tube.

Ireland on the fly: The best lake for spring salmon on the fly in Europe?

The popular podcast turns its focus on Lough Carrowmore, probably the best best lake for spring salmon on the fly in Europe

Although the salmon season has only just got under way, some of you may be looking to make plans for your spring fishing and one fishery that has always caught the eye is Carrowmore Lake in the far corner of Mayo on the Erris peninsula.

Renowned as a spring salmon lough it usually features with some of the earliest salmon caught in Ireland each year but as you’ll find out, Carrowmore is an awful lot more as well.

And so for this fishery focus episode Daire and Tom speak to Brian Hope, a member of the local Bangor Erris Angling Club to get the finer points on making the most out of your fishing on the lough.

34th Irish Winter Shore Festival – Report

This report from the organisers of the Irish Winter Shore Festival:

The 2023 Irish Winter Shore Angling Festival took place on east Wexford beaches from January 26th to 28th. The check-in commenced on Wednesday evening at the event headquarters The Upton Court Hotel in Kilmuckridge. The majority of the competitors took advantage of this & only 33 of the 124 entries remained to check in on Thursday morning. The numbers were down on what was expected for a variety of reasons from lack of accommodation to illness & the inevitable ‘no shows’.

The venue for the first session was Morriscastle Beach which was pegged in 4 zones. The session commenced at 12 mid-day with a cutting northerly wind & dropping tide & as was anticipated in these conditions fish came very slowly in the early part of the day. Later in the day when the wind abated & bait scent had permeated the water the fishing improved & towards dusk the whiting showed up. Disappointingly, as the tide ebbed the shifting sand bank created a bar & deep gully in front of some anglers which restricted their ability to reach deeper water. The minimum size limit for this event is 18 centimetres with no undersize fish permitted. The session finished at 5 o’clock & 1,054 fish had been recorded, all of them returned to the water.

The zone prize winners on day 1 were:

Longest flat fish was a 38-centimetre flounder for Seán Healy & longest round was a 33-centimetre whiting for Sam Collier. Super pool winner (best catch) was Ged Stevens on 950 points for 37 fish followed by Adrian Bordianu with 733 points for 26 fish & Ben Arnold third with 661 points for 34 fish. The result was posted at 8.40 pm.

The venue on day 2 was Ballinesker beach with 2 zones either side of the entrance. Fishing commenced at 12 mid-day in bright sunshine but with little or no wave action. Fish came well in the first hour but died off mid-session & once again picked up towards dusk. Lines were reeled in at 5 o’clock & 1,256 fish had been recorded & returned to the water.

Zone prize winners on day 2 were:

Longest fish of the day was a 36 centimetre coalfish for Shane Olden & longest flat fish was a 32 centimetre flounder for Gary Falk. Super pool winner was Richard Yates with 667 points for 25 fish followed by Ged Stevens with 621 points for 25 fish & Joe Wales in third with 585 points for 22 fish. Double zone winner Ged Stevens led the way in the individual result from Richard Yates who also had 2 zone wins. All to play for on day 3. The result was posted at 7.30.

Curracloe beach had been the planned venue for day 3 but due to pegs encroaching onto it from Ballinesker on day 2 there was not enough unfished space available to fit all the pegs on. No other suitable venue was available at short notice & with the sand bar in Morriscastle causing a problem the decision was taken to fish Ballinesker again.

The session commenced at 10.30 in overcast conditions with a light south easterly breeze & some good wave action. Fish appeared straight away with almost everyone recording in the first hour. As was to be expected catch numbers were down & with the finish at 3.30 well ahead of dusk it did not improve later in the day. 825 fish were recorded on day 3.

The zone winners on day 3 were:

Longest fish on day 3 was a 35 centimetre whiting for Ian Knight & longest flat fish was a 32 centimetre flounder for Darren Stevens. Super pool winner was Joe Arch with 534 points for 21 fish followed by Chris Clark on 470 points for 18 fish & third was Phil Lee on 413 points for 16 fish.

The hard-working results committee had the results completed & on display at 6.30.
Species captured were Flounder, Dab, Codling, Coalfish, Rockling, Lesser Spotted Dogfish, Whiting & Bass. Total number of fish recorded was 3,135.

The presentation dinner was served at 8pm followed by the prize giving. Chairman George McCullough opened the proceeding by asking those present to remember Micheál Quinn & Chris Howell both long standing supporters of the event who passed away since last we gathered.

He thanked everyone who had helped in the running of the event. He also thanked all our sponsors & supporters for their help & generous support. He complimented the management & staff of the Upton Court Hotel for a wonderful meal professionally served & enjoyed by all. He finished by thanking everyone who had donated prizes for the raffle.

Wild day provides plenty of action for anglers on Lough Derg

Damien Culliney of Anglers Paradise had Anne Marie and Stephen out for a day’s pike angling on Lough Derg. It was a wild and windy day, but it didn’t affect the fishing, as between casting and trolling they managed 10 fish. Anne Marie managed to land a new PB for herself, a beautiful 104 cm fish. Both guide and clients had a great day out, and they are already planning another trip together as they are officially hooked on Lough Derg.

Anglers on the ‘Mark’ as Leinster Pike Angling Club visit Cavan

pike
There were some lovely pike caught in the Leinster Pike Anglers winter league

The Leinster Pike Angling Club headed to a Cavan where they fished a small group of lakes for the penultimate leg of their winter league. 20 anglers made the most of the decent weather for the time of year, and some anglers had bumper bags, with Mark Kiernan coming out on top with a great catch of 18 fish for over 60lb.

With the top three looking like this:

1st Mark Kiernan 18 fish for 60’11
2nd Mark Byrne 15 fish 48’6
3rd Mark McKenna 6 fish 26’1
it looks like if your name wasn’t Mark, you might as well have stayed at home…

Big bags and new PBs make Newbridge Pike Anglers first outing a success

35 members of Newbridge District Pike Anglers hit the banks last weekend for their first competition of the season. They added a bit of variety to the day by mixing canal venues with river venues to give anglers a bit of choice. Most anglers headed for the river swims and that proved to be the better choice. One angler had a very productive day, landing 11 fish for over 49lb, while another angler broke his PB with a fine fish of 19lb, the heaviest fish on the day.

Overall, 72 pike were landed, a very creditable tally for the day. See Newbridge District Pike Anglers Facebook page for the full report.

Full results as follows:

1st Adam Craig 19lb new pb 1 fish
2nd David Quinlivan 9.02 hf 49.04 bag 11 fish
3rd Dave Murphy 7.15 hf 23.13 bag 6 fish
2nd heaviest fish Steo Cummins 16.08 bag 20.10
