Late tuna in Donegal Bay before season closes

The bluefin tuna season closes tomorrow, and while the weather of late has not suited tuna fishing, the Fiona Tee did manage a late trip last Friday. It was a successful trip, with two very fat hard fighting tuna to the boat, and one other fish lost.

Under pressure!
Success!

Good catches for Belgian ‘crazy gang’ in Carrickmacross

Peadar O’Brien of Irish Pike Fishing Guides welcomed his Belgian guests over to the Carrickmacross area for their annual piking visit. Peadar always has good craic with the ‘crazy gang’ but wasn’t expecting the fishing to be too much fun this time around due to very high water levels.

Things didn’t turn out too badly though – they somehow managed to land over thirty pike during their trip, with many more hook-ups and missed fish. Peadar reckons it will take him a while to recover but is already looking forward to next year!

Irish Specimen Anglers pick up their awards for the first time in two years

Jim Clohessy picks up an award for the new Irish record Stone Basse

Anglers who managed to capture a specimen fish during 2021 were in Dublin last weekend to pick up their specimen awards from the Irish Specimen Fish Committee. The ISFC awards ceremony is keenly awaited by specimen anglers, who enjoy meeting up with like-minded anglers and swapping notes on seasons past and seasons to come. This was the first time the event was held since Feb 2020, as the last two awards ceremonies were cancelled due to Covid, so it was great to see the event back on the calendar. Twaite Shad, Tope and Spurdog were among the most prominent species featuring in specimen anglers’ catches during 2021. Corkwing Wrasse were added to the list of eligible species for the first time in 2021, with the length set at 24cm, and 15 anglers managed to bag a specimen. There was one record awarded at the ceremony, as well-known Cork angler Jim Clohessy picked up a record Stone Basse of 6.07kg during the year. Photos of the awards ceremony are available on the ISFC website.

Weather no obstacle to Killybegs shore anglers

It may be late autumn, and the weather may be “inclement” to say the least, but that doesn’t deter some of the Killybegs Mariners crew. Some of them enjoyed a few hours on the beach this week, enjoying good fishing.

Plenty of decent size coalies were caught, along with flounder, turbot and sea trout. The big swell thrown up by storms produced some nice cod too for Johnny Byrne, one of the keenest shore anglers we know. If you put in the hours, sooner or later you get rewarded. Fish around, find out!

Another club member, Cormac Burke, attended the Irish Specimen Fish Committee awards in Dublin last weekend. He was there to collect specimen awards for himself and John Cunningham. Cormac had a specimen smoothhound, while John had a specimen spurdog. Cormac has a great write-up on the specimen awards and the backgrond to it on the Mariner Facebook page here.

Pike on the move for guests at Melview

This report from Kevin Lyons of Melview Fishing Lodge:

Sean, Bill and John, who are regulars to Melview Fishing Lodge, were back once again for another few days Pike fishing. Water levels were very high, making most of their reliable piking locations un-fishable. Host Kevin and the guys had a tactical talk to figure out where the fish might be lying up with the extra water in the system and then it was all down to the lads to keep on the move and locate the fish.

The first couple of the spots turned up nothing, but sticking with the plan to keep on the move and go after the fish, their luck changed when they managed three lovely from the next likely spot –  with two being over the magic 100cm. Dead baits, fished either static or under a float, produced the fish during their stay and all fish were released in good condition to fight another day.

Host Kevin reckons that they did really well considering the much higher water levels – ‘Thanks guys for your company and look forward to seeing you again soon!’.

Barrow bubbling and boiling for Naas anglers

The Naas & District Anglers were back on the banks to fish their John Prescott Memorial Match for the first time in a couple of years last weekend. After all the rain that fell in the week leading up to the match, anglers were a bit nervous about the state of the river. And when the 26 anglers arrived at their pegs, they found the river running high, and carrying plenty of colour.

As the match got underway, it became clear that the river was still on the rise and that the best of the fishing would be early on in the match. The conditions put the dace off the feed, but at least the roach were biting, and they provided the sport for the day. As the match went on, the river began to swell and boil even more, making fishing difficult, particularly on pegs exposed to the current.

Given those conditions, the winning weight of 6.4kg for Neil Keane was, in fact, a very creditable catch and he was way out in front of the field as the nearest weight was 3.12kg for Andrius Saulys, with David McNeice coming in third with 2.15kg. Lets hope they have better conditions in 2023.

Please fish in a sustainable manner

Jackie Mahon – Back at the Bench and a throwback

A finished order for Lough Conn
A finished order for Lough Conn

Jackie Mahon writes from his blog at jackiemahonguiding.com

The season is well and truly over, it was time to spend some time with my family before the tying started. I had a lovely week in the sun and now I am back at it again. I am starting winter orders while trying to top up my own guiding boxes as well as trying to get some dyeing done in between. What I find in October is customers are thinking about early season patterns like Claret Dabblers and Silver Dabblers, and of course the early season favourites the Minkie and the Humongous, and with Christmas orders thrown into the mix it can be quite mind-blowing tying everything from early season to mayfly patterns.

Some of the patterns that keep coming back to be tyed are the dabbler belonging to Brain Hallet from Lough Melvin. Brian lives on the shores of Lough Melvin and has fished Lough Erne and Lough Melvin all his life. He also has guided on both. This pattern has worked well for me on all the western Loughs. It’s a fly you can fish from start of the season to the end. I have had some great fishing in March and April on this fly for Gillaroo and Sonaghan.

Another great fly is the Olive Dabbler Deavin. When olives are around on Melvin for me it is necessary to have them on the cast. Tyed in size 12 it is a fish catcher and necessary to have in any box. As the season has ended I always get a bit of the fishing blues, I think back to the start of the season for me on both Arrow and Melvin. There are few places where you can find 5 species to fish for Char Browns, Ferox, Gillaroo and Sonaghan. There is something special about this water with these fish being smaller in size but make up for it in the fight.

March on Melvin last season was mixed, when the conditions suited the fishing was lively. Pulling duck fly patterns, the likes of Red Arrows, Bibios and Blae and Black. When the weather was cooler, especially that cold northern wind I found fishing slowed down and the likes of pulling Dabblers started to work over the shallows and along the islands. We had good fishing the other days on dry duck fly patterns and buzzers.

April started off in Melvin with strong easterly winds for most of the month and the fish switched completely off until later in the month when the winds eventually moved back to a more westerly wind. Olives started to appear, and the fish moved well on them. I had some clients over from the United States for a few days and the Browns, Gillaroo and Sonaghan did not disappoint from pulling wet dry olives and Nymph patterns we managed to boat eighteen fish in two days- All fish were safely returned. They were lucky enough to catch all three species on their trip to Lough Melvin.

At present I am just after finishing a box of Irish style hoppers. The last few seasons Irish style hoppers have been doing well in both Ireland and Scotland for both Browns and rainbow trout. They are all tyed using rich Irish colours. I found when fishing these patterns and a light ripple they can be deadly on the day.

Go fishing…

You can purchase some of my patterns in the new Fulling Mills brochure for 2023 which will be out soon.

Great fishing in Galway Bay when weather permits

A fine 11lbs cod

The weather may be awful much of the time lately, but the odd weather window offers opportunities for getting out. Skipper Kevin MacGabhann had a willing crew and took advantage of one such window recently to get out around the Aran Islands. A bit of shelter from the isands saw them enjoying good fishing, with some cracking late season fish. The best of them was this 11lb cod.

They also had plenty of pollack, coalfish, codling, ling and a few mackerel.
