Super attendance for Newbridge District Pike Anglers Open Competition

The Newbridge District Pike Anglers 2025 Open Competition was a resounding success despite concerns over high water levels following heavy rain. Thanks to some legwork by club secretary Brendan Jervis and some last-minute changing of pegs, the event went ahead under sunny skies with a strong westerly wind.

Attendance was impressive, with 51 juniors and 116 seniors competing. Juniors fished hard, with two breaking personal bests—a fantastic achievement. Seniors landed 10 fish up to 12lb, and the winner, Paul Douglas, claimed top spot after nearly 15 years of supporting the event.

Results as follows:
Seniors
1st – Paul Douglas (12lb, heaviest fish)
2nd – Dave Murphy (8lb 8oz, heaviest bag)
3rd – Sery Donic (8lb 2oz, 2nd heaviest bag)
4th – Leon Bradley (6lb 12oz, 2nd heaviest fish)
5th – Stephen Bolten (5lb 4oz, 3rd heaviest fish)

Juniors
1st – Adam Nolan (11lb 8oz, new PB)
2nd – Lloyd Ballard (10lb 14oz, new PB)
3rd – Luke Ennis (5lb)

Stewards Prize: Ciaran Sullivan

All juniors received prizes and medals at the presentation in West Wicklow House, where staff provided excellent hospitality.

Special thanks to Southside Angling, Sport Fins, Dan O’Reilly, ESB staff, and all volunteers who made the event possible. Plans are already underway to make next year’s competition bigger and better with new sponsors and increased prize money.

Marina magic for VDE Baggers

Round 4 of the VDE Baggers Winter League took place over the weekend on the River Erne. Conditions were ideal with a dropping river, though access to some prime sections was limited.

Bellanaleck Marina stole the show—packed with fish and producing the top five weights! If only they could fit 26 pegs there!

Huge congrats to Caolan King for an incredible 15kg haul—the biggest weight ever reported from the marina! 👏

Niall Murphy sput in a smashing performance to bag 7kg for 2nd (only his 5th time pole fishing!), and Leroy McEvoy took 3rd with 6kg.

Section winners:

  • Schools: Ewan Weed – 4.8kg
  • Bellanaleck Low: Jack Tisdall – 3.5kg
  • Dolan’s: Michał Truck – 2.3kg
  • QE: Saul King – 4.3kg

Killybegs anglers on shore and afloat enjoy good fishing

Angling club Killybegs Mariners and charter boat Killybegs Fishing Trips had some decent fishing at the weekend…

Killybegs Mariners fished the 9th leg of their league in calm conditions on Mullaghmore. A sharp cold breeze started the night but it faded away into more pleasurable weather as the night went on.

There were plenty of fish from the off. Rod tips were nodding almost as soon as baits hit the water but the problem was most were under our 20cm minimum size limit. Tactics changed and  anglers started using bigger baits and hooks to stop the targeting of small fish and avoid deep hooking. Plenty of small whiting for everyone and dabs, trout and coleys for the lucky few boosting their species count.

The end pegs further over had most of the counting size fish with flounders to 28cm for Chris but the winning longest flattie prize of €35 was won by Daragh McGuinness with a 21cm flounder.
In 2nd overall with 3 counting flounder, dab, coley and whiting and 179 pts winning €35 was Pat Cunningham with Pat also winning the lucky peg draw for another €24.

And in 1st place with 4 counting flounder along with dab, coley and whiting for 197pts winning €75 well done Chris Whyte who leads the league overall with 3 left to fish. Well done to all the winners and everyone out taking part

Keith Clarke, skipper of Fiona Tee at Killybegs Fishing Trips tells us that he had a great trip with guests out on Sunday. There were plenty of mackerel and herring in the harbour, so it didn’t take long to get the bait sorted before they headed out to fish the reefs.

The reefs fished well enough and they had polloack on the take all day long. The only problem was a seal who stayed with them for most of the day, let’s say he had plenty of dinners

IFSA announce team following fish-offs in Mayo

Killala Boat & Shore Angling Club hosted the IFA fish-offs for the team to fish in World Championships in Italy next year…

The weekend just gone, saw 36 of the finest and best shore anglers on the island of Ireland come to Killala once again to participate in the Fish Off’s to seek their ambition of representing Ireland in the World Championships.

Three sessions were held over the weekend, Enniscrone, Lacken and Srah to give each angler on every session 4 hours to show why they are here and to exhibit their skills.

Saturday saw lovely calm conditions with both sessions fishing very well , however Sunday saw very tough westerlies face each angler but determination oversaw conditions and it’s a credit to each angler.

The team for Italy is

  • Tim O’Sullivan Galway Bay Sea Angling Club
  • William Weir Castaways
  • David O’Sullivan Tralee Bay Sea Angling Club
  • JP Molloy West Cork and District SAC
  • Kevin Barber Maugherow Sac

Cheers to all who helped out with stewarding from within the club, outside and to the Federation score recorders for marking the score cards as well as The Village Inn for allowing us to use their function room to hold the peg draw

Steve Grogan wins 3rd round of Munster anglers winter league

Clondorney
Clondorney

Munster Coarse Anglers were back on the water at the weekend for the 3rd leg of their winter league. Kevin Leahy reports…

With high water levels everywhere last week we rescheduled the winter league match to this Sunday. Maintenance work being carried out at the Ardnacrusha Dam made our usual venue, O’Briensbridge, inaccessible so back to Clondorney for the 3rd Match.

Only 9 brave soul’s venture out to what was promised to be a bit of a wet and windy day however the weather Gods took pity and we had only the odd shower and a bit of choppy water to contend with. As always the shallow end fished the more consistent and the deeper pegs being a lot harder with bites at a premium.

Congratulations to Steve who managed a double figure weigh of 10lb 05oz and Morgan at the deeper end who managed to catch 150+ small Rudd for a section winning 7lb 7oz

Results
  • 1st Steve Grogan 10lb 05oz
  • 2nd Morgan Lewis 7lb 7oz
  • 3rd Kevin Leahy 5lb 02
  • 4th Liam Bedford 4lb 14oz

Christmas Gift Ideas – 2026 Tide Calendar

Every year around this time we share a few Christmas gift ideas – for those looking for a little stocking filler for the angler in their life. Even better if it’s a guaranteed Irish product and you can support small Irish businesses along the way.

Well, if the angler in your life is a sea angler, look no further! Ben Kinsella of www.tidecalendar.ie has produced a range of superb calendars with local tide times and heights for every day of the year. The tides are beautifully presented in an easy to understand graphic, along with beautiful photos of the local area. We ordered the Galway Bay calendar for our own use, and to say we’re impressed is an understatement. We may just have to get a few more as gifts!

So far Ben has produced calendars for Galway, Clare, Cork and Dublin, but we’re sure they will be very popular and the list will grow with demand. So if having the tides available at a glance is important to the sea angler in your life, you know where to look.

Irish angling Update 🎣 21 November 2025

A sudden cold snap gripped much of the country this week bringing to an end the wet and windy conditions that had dominated until last weekend. Everyone had frost and ice and the border counties even saw some snow.  The weekend’s rains were significant and most venues were in flood for most of the week. The weather didn’t put too much of a dampener on fishing in Ireland though and we have a few reports that are well worth a read…

november tench

The Leinster Coarse Fishing Federation fished the fourth round of their Royal Enfield Winter League at the weekend, and despite it being mid-November, tench still featured prominently in catches! CM Lakelands Feeder Club fished an open feeder match on  Lough Garadice last Sunday. Fishing was tough, but the winning net, weighing 4.200kg, included a bream and some skimmers. Meath Local Sports Partnership announced the official opening of a new accessible fishing platform at Enfield Harbour during the week. The new platform is free to use and available immediately at Enfield Harbour. No advance booking is required.

There were more PBs and metre pike for anglers fishing with Senan Stanley on Lough Derg in the last week. The biggest fish was 105cm, but two younger anglers fishing with their dads enjoyed tremendous fishing boating pike to 102cm. Patrick and Fin are our Catch of the Week winners. Belgian anglers fishing with Bodo Funke in the Boyle area also enjoyed great fishing last week and their best fish were 103cm and 109cm. A trio of junior anglers in Meath hit one of Monaghan’s lakes at the weekend. They all caught fish, including Kevin who marked the day by catching his first pike ever. Newbridge & District Pike Angling Club hosts its annual open pike fishing competition on November 23rd at Poulaphouca – a great day out for families and anglers of all ages. Lough Bracken and District Anglers have announced that day tickets are now available for the fishery from Anglers World in Navan.

On to sea angling now, where strong winds and cold conditions didn’t deter the boat or shore anglers in the Killybegs area. The Mariners endured Baltic north-easterlies on the airport beach for a good mix of species, and charter boat Fiona Tee had some lovely cod and ling despite bitter easterlies. At the other end of the country, tuna skipper Tony Santry gives a rundown on what was a very tough season for him, as persistent winds kept him tied up for much of the season. In Cork Harbour, Sarah Lynch enjoyed a runaway win in the first round of Cobh SAC’s Ling Lines series. Sarah caught 164 fish for 2194 points, over twice as much as 2nd-placed Paul O’Callaghan. At Ballinoulart on the east coast, a standout display from Max Roche saw him win the fifth leg of the Leinster Shore League. Lastly, The Henrystackleshop.com Irish Cod Championships hosted by Sea Angling Ireland SAC will take place on Saturday, November 29th, in Youghal. For more details see Irish Cod Championships to be held on 29 November.

Salmon regs 2026

The Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment has opened a public consultation on the Wild Salmon and Sea Trout Tagging Scheme (Amendment) Regulations 2025 and Conservation Measures for 2026. Details of the proposed regulations and information on how to make a submission are available here: Wild Salmon and Sea Trout Regs and Conservation Measures for the 2026 Season announced

And now the weather

As we go to press the settled weather of the last couple of days is coming to an end and we have small craft warnings on all coasts for Saturday and Status Yellow gale warnings on all coasts for Sunday. Apart from that, we’ll see wet conditions return on Saturday with patchy rain and drizzle slowly developing in the west and southwest. A milder day with highest temperatures of 7 to 11°C in light to moderate southwesterly winds. Heavy rains are likely overnight and Sunday will be a wet and rather windy day with rain continuing for most and fresh to strong and gusty westerly winds. It will be drier in Munster with showers and sunny spells. Highest temperatures of 6 to 10°C. Monday and Tuesday will be mostly dry and bright but the further outlook is for more unsettled, milder wet weather later in the week.

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland.
