Steve Grogan wins 3rd round of Munster anglers winter league

Clondorney
Clondorney

Munster Coarse Anglers were back on the water at the weekend for the 3rd leg of their winter league. Kevin Leahy reports…

With high water levels everywhere last week we rescheduled the winter league match to this Sunday. Maintenance work being carried out at the Ardnacrusha Dam made our usual venue, O’Briensbridge, inaccessible so back to Clondorney for the 3rd Match.

Only 9 brave soul’s venture out to what was promised to be a bit of a wet and windy day however the weather Gods took pity and we had only the odd shower and a bit of choppy water to contend with. As always the shallow end fished the more consistent and the deeper pegs being a lot harder with bites at a premium.

Congratulations to Steve who managed a double figure weigh of 10lb 05oz and Morgan at the deeper end who managed to catch 150+ small Rudd for a section winning 7lb 7oz

Results
  • 1st Steve Grogan 10lb 05oz
  • 2nd Morgan Lewis 7lb 7oz
  • 3rd Kevin Leahy 5lb 02
  • 4th Liam Bedford 4lb 14oz

Every year around this time we share a few Christmas gift ideas – for those looking for a little stocking filler for the angler in their life. Even better if it’s a guaranteed Irish product and you can support small Irish businesses along the way.

Well, if the angler in your life is a sea angler, look no further! Ben Kinsella of www.tidecalendar.ie has produced a range of superb calendars with local tide times and heights for every day of the year. The tides are beautifully presented in an easy to understand graphic, along with beautiful photos of the local area. We ordered the Galway Bay calendar for our own use, and to say we’re impressed is an understatement. We may just have to get a few more as gifts!

So far Ben has produced calendars for Galway, Clare, Cork and Dublin, but we’re sure they will be very popular and the list will grow with demand. So if having the tides available at a glance is important to the sea angler in your life, you know where to look.

Irish angling Update 🎣 21 November 2025

A sudden cold snap gripped much of the country this week bringing to an end the wet and windy conditions that had dominated until last weekend. Everyone had frost and ice and the border counties even saw some snow.  The weekend’s rains were significant and most venues were in flood for most of the week. The weather didn’t put too much of a dampener on fishing in Ireland though and we have a few reports that are well worth a read…

november tench

The Leinster Coarse Fishing Federation fished the fourth round of their Royal Enfield Winter League at the weekend, and despite it being mid-November, tench still featured prominently in catches! CM Lakelands Feeder Club fished an open feeder match on  Lough Garadice last Sunday. Fishing was tough, but the winning net, weighing 4.200kg, included a bream and some skimmers. Meath Local Sports Partnership announced the official opening of a new accessible fishing platform at Enfield Harbour during the week. The new platform is free to use and available immediately at Enfield Harbour. No advance booking is required.

There were more PBs and metre pike for anglers fishing with Senan Stanley on Lough Derg in the last week. The biggest fish was 105cm, but two younger anglers fishing with their dads enjoyed tremendous fishing boating pike to 102cm. Patrick and Fin are our Catch of the Week winners. Belgian anglers fishing with Bodo Funke in the Boyle area also enjoyed great fishing last week and their best fish were 103cm and 109cm. A trio of junior anglers in Meath hit one of Monaghan’s lakes at the weekend. They all caught fish, including Kevin who marked the day by catching his first pike ever. Newbridge & District Pike Angling Club hosts its annual open pike fishing competition on November 23rd at Poulaphouca – a great day out for families and anglers of all ages. Lough Bracken and District Anglers have announced that day tickets are now available for the fishery from Anglers World in Navan.

On to sea angling now, where strong winds and cold conditions didn’t deter the boat or shore anglers in the Killybegs area. The Mariners endured Baltic north-easterlies on the airport beach for a good mix of species, and charter boat Fiona Tee had some lovely cod and ling despite bitter easterlies. At the other end of the country, tuna skipper Tony Santry gives a rundown on what was a very tough season for him, as persistent winds kept him tied up for much of the season. In Cork Harbour, Sarah Lynch enjoyed a runaway win in the first round of Cobh SAC’s Ling Lines series. Sarah caught 164 fish for 2194 points, over twice as much as 2nd-placed Paul O’Callaghan. At Ballinoulart on the east coast, a standout display from Max Roche saw him win the fifth leg of the Leinster Shore League. Lastly, The Henrystackleshop.com Irish Cod Championships hosted by Sea Angling Ireland SAC will take place on Saturday, November 29th, in Youghal. Salmon regs 2026

The Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment has opened a public consultation on the Wild Salmon and Sea Trout Tagging Scheme (Amendment) Regulations 2025 and Conservation Measures for 2026. Details of the proposed regulations and information on how to make a submission are available here: Wild Salmon and Sea Trout Regs and Conservation Measures for the 2026 Season announced

And now the weather

As we go to press the settled weather of the last couple of days is coming to an end and we have small craft warnings on all coasts for Saturday and Status Yellow gale warnings on all coasts for Sunday. Apart from that, we’ll see wet conditions return on Saturday with patchy rain and drizzle slowly developing in the west and southwest. A milder day with highest temperatures of 7 to 11°C in light to moderate southwesterly winds. Heavy rains are likely overnight and Sunday will be a wet and rather windy day with rain continuing for most and fresh to strong and gusty westerly winds. It will be drier in Munster with showers and sunny spells. Highest temperatures of 6 to 10°C. Monday and Tuesday will be mostly dry and bright but the further outlook is for more unsettled, milder wet weather later in the week.

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland.

Pike fishing at its best for Pierre and Thibaut in Boyle

Bodo Funke of Angling Services Ireland reports from the Boyle area…

Pierre and Thibaut from Belgium were back out with me recently for two days of pike fishing. Conditions were classic Irish autumn—cool, fresh mornings with settled water—and the lads made the most of it. Ireland continues to be one of Europe’s top destinations for big, wild pike, and the two Belgian anglers certainly saw why. Again they landed some super fish, with the biggest measuring 109 cm and 103 cm this time, both powerful, hard-fighting Irish pike that gave them unforgettable battles.

Tough weather, steady results from the Killybegs Mariners

Killybegs Mariners report from their latest league outing…

Baltic north easterlies blew across the airport beach for the 10 hardy souls at league outing number 8 but there was a nice selection of fish caught which made for an enjoyable evening’s fishing.

There were 6 species of fish caught including bass of 35cm for Proinnsias, trout to 53cm for Shane, coley, flounder to 34cm for Darren, turbot and plaice to 21cm for Chris.

Longest flattie prize outside the top 2 was won by Dessie McGinley with a 32cm flounder. In 2nd place with flounder and bass was Proinnsias Doherty. And in 1st place for the 2nd outing in a row with 3 flounder to 34cm and turbot to 20cm was Darren Rawdon.

The next fixture is pencilled in for this Friday 21 November evening at Mullaghmore near side.

Killybegs Fishing Trips reporting solid mixed fishing despite strong easterly winds

Killybegs Fishing Trips managed to get out on the water a couple of times recently. Check out their short report below…

Back at the general fishing yesterday. We had really strong easterly winds, but still managed to get the day in. Great to see plenty of mackerel in the harbour, with some nice herring mixed in. Fishing was very slow at first but picked up after a couple of hours, with a good run of pollack and a nice cod.

On our second outing we had more good pollack as well as some fine ling.

Hopefully we’ll have a good run now leading up to Christmas.

New Accessible Fishing Platform Casts Open Opportunities in Enfield

Meath Local Sports Partnership (Meath LSP) is excited to announce the official opening of a new accessible fishing platform at Enfield Harbour, the first of its kind in County Meath. Supported through Sport Ireland’s Dormant Accounts Sports Inclusion Capital Programme, the new platform will provide wheelchair users and those with reduced mobility safe, comfortable access to the harbour for fishing. Meath LSP engaged and partnered with Waterways Ireland and Meath County Council to secure a site for the platform.

As part of this initiative, Meath LSP partnered with Waterways Ireland to identify a suitable location in the county for an accessible fishing platform, an amenity that will give people with disabilities the opportunity to engage safely in angling while also offering an important social outlet for individuals and groups. The facility also ties in with Meath LSP’s commitment to developing outdoor recreational infrastructure. The chosen site in Enfield was developed under the supervision of Waterways Ireland, who manage and control this stretch of water. With their commitment to restoring, developing, and promoting Ireland’s navigable inland waterways for public enjoyment, Waterways Ireland ensured the delivery of a high-quality, sustainable facility that marks a first for County Meath.

The new platform is free to use and available immediately at Enfield Harbour. No advance booking is required.

Commenting on the launch, Cllr. Wayne Harding, Cathaoirleach of Meath County Council, highlighted the importance of the new platform: “The new accessible fishing platform at Enfield Harbour links strongly with Meath’s rich heritage, and I believe accessible and safe infrastructure such as this plays a massive part in our communities. We are committed to ensuring more inclusive facilities are put in place within the county to meet the joint objectives of Meath County Council and Meath LSP to remove barriers to participation in sport and physical activity.

Officially opening the platform was Minister Charlie McConalogue T.D. who said: “I am delighted to launch this new accessible fishing platform in Enfield, one of the first in Meath. Angling is one of the country’s oldest pastimes and one that is shared among communities across Ireland. Accessible platforms like this are vital to ensuring that all members of our communities can partake in and enjoy fishing.”

Mary Van Lieshout, Director of Participation, Ethics, Integrity, and Research at Sport Ireland, commented: “I am happy to see Sport Ireland support this vital project that will assist and encourage fishermen and women of all ages and abilities in Meath. Removing barriers to physical activity is one of the key cornerstones of our unit in the organisation and I appreciate the great work that has been undertaken by Meath LSP, Waterways Ireland, and Meath County Council in ensuring this project came to life.

Mary Murphy, CEO, Meath Local Sports Partnership, highlighted the partnership in bringing the project to life: “We are excited and proud to work with Waterways Ireland and Meath County Council on this new accessible fishing platform. The facility aligns with Meath LSP’s strategic plan to promote an inclusive approach to sport and physical activity. We also want to thank the Royal Enfield Coarse Angling Club, who engaged with us throughout this journey to make this new facility possible.”

Jean Errity, Senior Engineer, Waterways Ireland commented, “We were pleased to be asked to work alongside Meath LSP and Meath County Council on this project. The Royal Canal is one of the most historic waterways in the country, and this project will play a small but significant role in the development of the Royal Canal and in encouraging the use of the waterway for amenity purposes. We believe this new platform will be a vital asset to the community of Enfield and its surroundings.”
