Live fly tying with Peter Driver

Peter Driver of Piscari Fly is back for another season of his winter fly tying series. The first 4 episodes cover top flies from 2021, Lough patterns, Spiders and this weekend it’s ladies’ night…

Last week it was the Zonkers, a lure particularly popular with rainbow trout anglers but take it’s fair share of brown trout when fishing lough style or on a sinking line. This week (Saturday Night at 8.30pm) Peter is looking at

  • grayling bugs and similar flies,
  • wading techniques,
  • hot tips,
  • and there’ll be a special guest too.

We don’t have grayling in Ireland, but competition anglers need to be familiar with grayling flies and tactics if they want to succeed in the UK and European competition circuit. These patters can also be useful for early season brown trout…

Tune in live on Saturday Night at 8.30pm

These shows are posted to Peter’s Youtube on Sunday mornings: https://www.youtube.com/c/PiscariFly

Good sport on light gear in Donegal Bay

John Burke with a big garfish and a new club record

Killybegs Mariners SAC report  great sport on light gear from the local beaches and piers.

Please read their report below…

Big shoals of small scad in the harbours and inlets of Donegal Bay making good sport on the light gear as the shoals hugged the bottom finding safety in numbers and feeding on fry that also attracted some decent colfish to mid 30s cm and bigger pollack that would arch the rods over.

Bottom fishing on the big hooks with mackerel heads and fillets attracted some conger and a three bearded rockling which would have been around specimen fish size at 41cm if weighed.

41cm three bearded rockling for Killybegs Mariner Stefan
1m conger off the pier

Great sport keeping things busy as the darker evenings close in after the time change and the small piers making relaxing fishing under the lights. However, don’t  put away the summer gear just yet! A huge garfish (new club record) was caught by  John Burke on the local shore while fishing with the float to target the gars.

New Report: Most salmon are now ‘released’ by anglers in Ireland

Wild Atlantic Salmon being released
A Wild Atlantic Salmon being released

A new report published by Inland Fisheries Ireland shows that more wild salmon are now being ‘caught and released’ than ‘caught and kept’ by anglers in Ireland, to help conserve declining fish populations.

For the first time since records began in 2001, the Wild Salmon and Sea Trout Statistics Report 2020 shows that the number of salmon caught and released by anglers (51% of salmon caught) now outstrips the number of salmon that are kept (49% of salmon caught).

In all, 14,138 wild salmon and sea trout licences were issued to recreational anglers in 2020, while 78 public licences were made available to commercial fishermen. Inland Fisheries Ireland’s newly-published report is based on the logbook returns of these licence holders, which shows that recreational anglers caught an estimated 78% of all salmon and sea trout last year, compared with commercial fishermen’s catch of 22%.

The Chairperson of Inland Fisheries Ireland, Fintan Gorman, praised the conservation efforts of anglers, clubs and federations around the country, saying: “Looking at statistics from the 2020 Wild Salmon and Sea Trout Report, it is encouraging to see anglers practicing ‘catch and release’ to a greater extent than ever before. Anglers released 51% of their wild salmon catches in 2020, compared with 47% in 2019 and that’s a very positive development.”

He added: “However, ‘catch and release’ angling by itself won’t solve the problem of declining fish populations, such as wild salmon or sea trout. That’s why Inland Fisheries Ireland will continue implementing other important measures too, such as fish barrier mitigation, water quality monitoring, ‘invasive species’ control and enforcement patrols of fisheries. We will also keep promoting the sustainable stewardship of our precious salmon fishery through our schools and marketing programmes. These are all crucial factors in protecting and conserving our fish populations and their habitats for the benefit of this generation and future generations to come.”

The Wild Salmon and Sea Trout Tagging Scheme provides the state agency with data to assist with the protection, management and conservation of wild salmon and sea trout.

The Chief Executive Officer of Inland Fisheries Ireland, Francis O’ Donnell, has also welcomed the positive conservation efforts being made by citizens across the country to protect Ireland’s salmon and sea trout resource. He said: “Atlantic Salmon and sea trout are facing a very uncertain future due to habitat degradation, water quality issues, unacceptable levels of poaching, marine migration issues and the effects of climate change. As always, our staff are deeply committed to executing our statutory role to enforce, protect and conserve our native fish stocks and in particular salmon and migratory sea trout. This is very much aligned with our new corporate plan and vision as the statutory agency charged with protecting the Inland Fisheries Resource.”

According to the organisation’s 2020 report, five rivers accounted for over half of all salmon caught by anglers and commercial fishermen last year. These were: the River Moy in Co. Mayo, the River Blackwater in Lismore, Co. Waterford, the River Laune in Co. Kerry, the Corrib in Co. Galway and the Lower Lee in Cork.

27,829 wild salmon were caught collectively by commercial fishermen and recreational anglers in 2020, including salmon which were later released. For sea trout, the total catch recorded last year was 1,394 when figures for commercial fishermen and anglers are combined.

Meanwhile, between now and December 1st, Inland Fisheries Ireland is running a public consultation on the future management of the Wild Salmon and Sea Trout Tagging Scheme. The state agency is encouraging anyone with an interest in the area to submit their views on how the tagging system can be improved and modernised. It is especially keen to hear from salmon and sea trout anglers, angling clubs, commercial fishermen and those businesses that distribute salmon and sea trout licences, such as fishing tackle shops.

More 100cm+ pike for anglers in Boyle!

Bodo Funke of Angling Services Ireland reports great fishing form the Boyle area. Fishing wasn’t aleways easy due to high water levels and strong winds, however, various groups of anglers from Italy and Germany enjoyed excellent pike fishing over the past few weeks catching good numbers of pike over the magic 100cm mark. The best fish so far was a cracking Esox lucius of 111cm for German angler duo Michael Hackenberg and Rupert Lang.

Big skate from the shore!

Earlier in the week, Derry angler Liam Mullan landed a big common skate at Rathmullan Pier, a well-known ray mark on Lough Swilly. Liam, who fishes from the pier on a regular basis, safely released the fish which after unhooking. The skate was estimated around 90kg.

French pikers make light of high water in Longford

Angler holding large pike
A great finish for Arnuaud Landrieu

Kevin Lyons reports in from Melview Lodge in Co. Longford on some great fishing for French visitors.

Angler holding large pike
A great finish for Arnuaud Landrieu

French anglers Etienne, Arnaud, Michel and Alain finished up their holiday with 195 Pike despite some poor weather conditions and very high water levels. Casting / Jerking both hard and soft lures they managed some cracking pike fishing during their stay here at Melview Fishing Lodge.

High Water

Water levels continued to rise throughout the week as the land waters drained off into the Lakes and Rivers. The guys taking into account the constant changes made changes of their own tracking down the fish as they moved out of the ever increasing flows and to more calm sheltered places to lay up, but there was no hiding from these guys. In some cases the guys were catching from where there would normally be a grassy bank, the water was that high.

Host Kevin said, in these conditions this was Pike fishing anglers at their best. Well done guys, you put the work and knowledge in to your fishing and deserved great result at the end. And this was all rounded off with a couple of nights of good old Irish hospitality in the town, a great time had by all.

(All fish returned unharmed)

Etienne is all smiles

Tope, spurs and huss still biting for Wicklow Boat Charters

tope
Specimen Spurdog on Saturday for John Mcloughlin, well deserved indeed. 17.5lb 117cm long

Kit Dunne had a some more great fishing off the Wicklow coast at the weekend…

OCT 30 Spurs, Huss and Specimen Tope for Darren Maxwell crew. We went out deep for the spurs and bullhuss. It was a fresh sea but the lads stuck at it. They had spurdogs to 8lb and Huss to 10lb but no big ones. We headed inshore then for 2 hours at tope. There was a fine 46lb, 156cm specimen for Ryan Maxwell followed by a 153cm for his Dad, Darren. Great group, great fishing lads, great result.

OCT 29 Great fishing today with a great bunch of lads. A few new ones and a few good old friends. Out deep first for Spur and Huss we managed at least 50 Spur from 1lb to 17.5lb and maybe 5 Huss to 10lb or so. There was a Irish Specimen Spur for John Mcloughlin at 17.5lb in the last minute before a move inshore, a well spotted good bite kept us waiting to haul with the engine running. Niall Burke bagged about 13 Spur and his favourite a fine Huss. He also had a run like a train inshore, which was definitely a big tope that didn’t connect in the end.

All in all a great day with great people.
