Cathal's Bass

Bass guide David Norman reports on a Kayak Lure fishing trip with Cathal Reynolds…

Having delivered the kayak safety and technique briefings ashore, we started our time afloat together with some coaching on top water lure retrieves and what shortly followed was one of the most exciting episodes of the season leading to the capture and strong release of Cathal’s personal best lure caught Bass of 70cm, caught on the Zorus Patchinko surface lure.

Amazing specimen mullet in West Cork

A cracking specimen mullet of 7lbs 13oz for Jim Murray

It was a red letter day for mullet fishing fan and specimen hunter Jim Murray last week. Fishing a well-known mullet mark in West Cork, Jim landed an absolute whopper of a thick lipped mullet. Weighing 7lbs 13oz, the fish is an amazing 64% over the specimen weight of 5lbs. Those who fish for mullet will know how impressive this is. They will also know how hard-fighting mullet can be, so we bet that fish gave Jim a serious scrap! Well done Jim, top angling!

Good fishing in Shannon Estuary before weather broke

Tope aboard the Clare Dragoon

Before the weather really broke, Luke Aston had a trip inside the Shannon Estuary, where his guests had some nice fishing for tope, conger and bull huss. Luke says utit was nice to see a few female tope at this time of year, as it’s normally the smaller males earlier in the season.

With the deterioration in the weather, the Clare Dragoon is tied up in Kilrush Marina for a few days, but Luke has plans for October, with tuna and other species to be caught!

Weather gives time to reflect on a great month in Galway Bay

Pollack

The weather has been inclement this week, with most days unsuitable for going to sea. With the boat tied up, skipper John Fleming has been looking back at the last few weeks action, and going through the photos. While shark fishing was slow in September, possibly due to the lingering algal bloom offshore, the dpecies fishing, particularly for whitefish, was “on fire”. Check out some of the photos from the last month.

A regular day is between 9am- 6pm from either Rossaveal, Spiddal or Galway depending on species being sought after. Fishing on the inshore reefs for pollock, cod, ling, wrasse, conger eel and mackerel can be reached in 10 minutes from departure, while our offshore reef marks are within 45 minutes of departure. Our ground fishing for tope, spurdog, ray, bullhuss, turbot, plaice and the giant common skate can all be reached within the hour which ensures the most amount of time is spent fishing.
The shark season usually starts at the end of June and runs into late October, this is the ultimate angling adrenaline rush with these hard fighting blue and porbeagle sharks all being tagged and released safely.

Pike On The Fly For Belgium Anglers At Melview Fishing Lodge Longford

pike
Cedric is all smiles

Kevin Lyons of Melview Lodge is back once more with a pike report from Co. Longford…

Husband and wife Cedric and Frauke, Pike fly anglers from Belgium, along with Cedric’s uncle Michel were here once again for their annual fishing trip to Melview Fishing Lodge. Unable to travel last year they were looking forward to getting out on the water. The fly only couple have started their holiday well with a good number of Pike caught during the first few days. Michel is a lure angler and has also had a few good Pike to the boat.

The weather has started to change a little but the word is that there are some more nice Pike still being caught so we will catch with them and hopefully report on how their fishing holiday finished up for them.

All fish returned unharmed.

East coast tope fish well in Wicklow

Kit Dunne has been out after tope on the east coast with some decent results. Kit had to find sheltered marks close inshore to keep out of the strong winds and when he did the fish followed.
No monsters, but anglers Henk Theulings and Niall Burke had some nice fish in the mid thirties of pounds and up to 153cm long. There would have been more to report if they didn’t have to rely on some poor quality frozen bait – the likely reason for a number of dropped runs during the day.

Another successful suicide awareness event for Killinarden Angling Initiative

Killinarden Angling Initiative held their annual Mental Health and Suicide Awareness event on Oaklands Lake in New Ross last weekend. As ever, there was a super turnout for the event and the proceeds went to a very worthy cause. Patrick Buddy Ryan of the KAI reports:

So here it is, another year done and dusted with plenty of awareness and much needed funds raised for HOPE – Suicide Prevention Drop In Centre Tallaght.

Dutch and Belgian anglers enjoy great sea angling in West Cork

skate fishing
Stuck in a skate

Mark Gannon reports from Courtmacsherry…

We had a great week with even better friends from Holland and Belgium. Great to have the Continental anglers back to Courtmacsherry gives us a sense of normality returning. They started the trip with some fine ling over the wrecks.

ling
33lbs an Irish Specimen for Peter Vandershaeghe,

After that they had some lovely skate, productive ground fishing and a bit more time over the wrecks. After they finished up and went home, we had a group of Irish anglers out on a great trip for sharks.

The self drives are doing well on the bass with an angler landing 8 fish while trolling in the estuary last week.
