Trout fishing on Loughs Conn & Cullin remains difficult

Kevin O’Boyle reports from Loughs Conn & Cullin…

Hazy sunshine and temperatures up to 19° Celsius for the start of the week. The lakes remained mostly calm for the week. With very few trout showing, trout tend to move on to roach or perch fry this time of year, anglers were forced to go to deeper water in search of fish. Trout angling proved hard with only a few trout recorded for the week.

Ian Wise had 2 trout for 1.5 lbs. in Bog Bay, North Conn on Pearly Dabblers. John Warren had 3 trout over a few evenings fishing, the best weighing 2 lbs. around the islands outside of Bog Bay.

In South Conn, a group of anglers fishing out of Murphy’s Boat Hire struggled over 3 days with very calm conditions, but their hard work did pay off a little with a few trout to their boats. All fish were caught on Sedges and Dabblers. The heaviest trout weighed 2 lbs.

There were reports of a significant number of boats out on Conn but with little success.

At least 14 salmon were caught trolling on the lake with copper and silver spoons and Tobies. One good salmon of 12 lbs. was caught on an old-fashioned blue and silver wooden Devon trolling just south of the River Deel, near Kent’s pool.

River Moy Angling Report week ending 04/07/21

A good dry week, with a mix of cloud and some hazy sunshine with temperatures of up to 19° Celsius.

This ended by Friday with heavy outbreaks of rain continuing into the weekend with widespread showers but remaining fairly calm all week. Extremely low water levels all week until the weekend, gave readings at Ballylahan Bridge from 0.251m to a rise of 0.336 m by Sunday evening.

Three hundred and ninety-one salmon were reported caught for the week ending 4th July 2021 on the various fisheries on the Moy.

The low water favoured the Moy Fishery this week with a total of 115 salmon caught of which 19 were caught on the Cathedral Beat and the remaining 96 caught on the Ridge Pool.  Fifty-one salmon were released, and all fish were caught on the fly.

Ballina Salmon Anglers reported 25 salmon, all grilse.

Mount Falcon had 7 for salmon for the week.

Knockmore Salmon Anglers reported 1 salmon.

Moving upstream, Armstrong’s Fishery had 12 salmon while next door Gannon’s Fishery reported 7 fish caught.

The Foxford Fishery produced 71 salmon for the week all on bubble and fly, the best weighing 7 lbs.

Foxford Salmon Anglers had 61 salmon all on bubble and fly with a good percentage released.

Wet wet wet

Evan lands an almighty porbeagle

Anglers with Sea Angling Charters have been having some great shark fishing in recent weeks. There are a few blues about but Porbeagle have been featuring in plenty of trips as well.

And, while the punters have been enjoying good fishing, it’s actually a day when the punters put in a no-show that produced a day to remember for young Evan Collins. Not wishing to waste a good day’s fishing when his customers failed to turn up, skipper (& Dad) Tom Collins decided to turn it into a family day out including some whale watching and a bit of fishing. And Evan made the most of his unexpected opportunity by managing to catch his first-ever porbeagle, managing to capture the day’s excitement on video which is available on his YouTube channel Evan the all round Angler.

Fly caught pollock and topwater bass in West Cork

David Norman of West Cork Bass has been out on the kayaks in pursuit of big pollock and top-water bass lately. David was out with @irelandonthefly for a crack at the Clonakilty bass in the surface layers and the fish didn’t disappoint.

When the sun came out a few days later, David switched to deeper tactics for big pollock on fly and lure. Again, the fish were obliging for fights and photos, before being released back to the depths.

The best of the pollock, which measured 75 cm and probably approaching double figures, was caught on the Pirate Lures’ “Wrasser” soft bait.  David reckons that the bigger pollock seemed to be absent or inactive inshore during June, but hopes they’re back in action for the rest of the Summer and Autumn!

Borough SAC break plenty of personal bests with Wicklow Boat Charters

Kit Dunne from Wicklow Boat Charters had a few groups out in the past week and there were some fine catches for the anglers onboard.

“Great craic with the Borough SAC, Stan Ryan and Co. Many records were broken, PB’s and firsts for some lads. Well done to everyone, it was a pleasure as always.”

Earlier in the week, other groups experienced similar fishing with plenty of Tope showing including some to specimen size. So, if you are looking for a specimen Tope or Smoothie, it looks like Kit is producing the goods down in Wicklow right now.

Has your 1-day or 21-day licence expired?

Salmon and Sea Trout Anglers who purchased 1-day or 21-day licences during the 2021 season are being asked to please return their logbooks and any unused gill tags.

Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) is encouraging salmon and sea trout anglers to return angling logbooks (setting out their fishing and catch record) and any unused gill tags from expired 1-day, or 21-day licences.

Under the Wild Salmon and Sea Trout Tagging Scheme, anglers can return these in one of three ways:

  1. Using the pre-paid business return envelope that was supplied at the time of purchase
  2. Posting the logbook and unused gill tags to the IFI office address that is displayed on their licence or logbook.
  3. Scanning and emailing logbook and licence documents to salmonlogbookreturn@fisheriesireland.ie (please scan all sides of documents, including continuation pages, to ensure that the licence names and number can be correctly linked to the logbook).

On average, 70% of anglers in Ireland return their logbooks and these returns provide vital information regarding the status and management of our wild Atlantic Salmon and Sea Trout stocks into the future.

Reminder

In accordance with the Wild Salmon and Sea Trout Tagging Scheme, anglers in Ireland are required by law to return their completed logbook (setting out their fishing and catch record) and all unused tags to the issuing office of Inland Fisheries Ireland within 7 days of licence expiry.

As part of the Scheme, an angler must attach a valid gill tag to a salmon (any size) or sea trout (over 40cm) immediately on landing.  They must enter the details of the catch and/or gill-tag used into their logbook.

Any questions or queries?

Please email salmonlogbookreturn@fisheriesireland.ie and we will respond to your query as quickly as possible.
