More anglers on Lough O’Flynn but fishing tough going

Joe Fitzharris reports from Lough O’Flynn…

There has been a slight increase in anglers using Lough O’Flynn in recent weeks as society slowly returns to normal. However fly anglers have been having it fairly tough going in reasonable conditions. Below, is a summary of recorded catches with below average size of trout been returned.

  • Phillip McGoldrick & Anthony Baggott recorded a fish a piece @1lb.
  • Daniel McDermott & Ruairi Comer caught 4 trout with best fish @1lb.
  • Husband and wife team Padraic & Deirdre Gallagher had 7 – fish @ 1 lb
  • Joe Fitzharris & Dan McDermott while targeting overwintered fish each had fish over 2lb.
  • Vladock Bogdan had 3 fish averaging a pound for his outing.

Another quiet week on Currane but a few salmon from the Inny

Water Levels up

Vincent Appleby reports from Lough Currane…

2/6/21 Just one lonesome Currane angler manipulating this day and nothing for his efforts on this opening day for the hotels and bed and breakfasts as they open their doors Now we head for the weather. Made a nice drop of rain and there was a reasonable flood on the Inny. Wind NNE light and veered NW light and overcast and humid.

3/6/21 Currane anglers were all quiet but as I say that a few Currane anglers converted to the Inny C&R anglers, and it was not long before a fine 7lbs. Salmon was caught on the spin, plus there was one lost. Wind light to fresh SW and overcast all day with light rain.

4/6/21 The Currane anglers were all quiet on all fronts this day as we head into the holiday weekend, so let’s hope the Currane anglers from every County comes down and show their skills in the art of flyfishing and trolling and it would be great to get a few C&R photos or videos and show your art in the Salmon and Sea Trout film department. Wind SSE fresh to strong at times and overcast and followed by downpours.

5/6/21 There were 11 boats out manipulating this day and by all accounts their lines were slack and going by my WhatsApp you can say the Currane Anglers were frustrated with today’s lack of action. Wind SW light and bright and sunny.

6/6/21 There were 7 boats out and nothing to report for their efforts, but to be fair to the Currane anglers there were light winds from the NW then veered SW light and bright sunshine all day, so on that note we will head for the River Inny where the sun was shining on one angler, while on the spin caught and released a fine Grilse.

8/6/21 Straight to the dirty rotten thieving light handed rotter who stole the oars from my boat, talking of knocking someone when their down! Just for the record they are of sentimental value need I say more. Now for today angling news and sadly there were only two boats out and nothing to report. Wind light and variable

9/5/21 The Currane anglers were all quiet on the Currane waters this day and for good reason, they had their C&R Inny hats on because there was a nice flood coming down the Inny, I find it surprising that there was no mention of any C&R Wild Atlantic Salmon, it sounds like Rivergate, I will leave it to your experience and imagination. Wind SSW light and overcast and very humid. A video worth watchingwe might learn from this video

Great fishing on the Nore as trout take a bit of everything

Brown trout

Dan O’Neill was out on the Nore last weekend…

The slightly warmer and more humid days leading up to my fishing outings last weekend made for some great fishing. Trout were coming to wets, dry dropper and bubble head caddis.

My first trip was on the Nore to try out some new Klink patterns and perdigon nymphs. I have fished a small bit with perdigons in the past so wanted to re-visit and pick up where I left off. Picking some nice water at the tail end of one of the runs it was time to get started. It wasn’t long before that unmistakable buttery gold flash under my klink indicated I was into my first trout. A beautiful brown trout began leaping, bringing me around in a semi circle till I was facing downstream. I soon had him at the net, a fish of about 30cm. It was a lovely start with a few small to medium fish following.

As the morning progressed trout were sipping and jumping for joy along the medium to slow water so I decided to give wet flies a chance. I had quite a few nice trout showing the usual acrobatics which we never get sick of seeing. Water temps have been hitting 16C and above the past few days, water level is coming down nicely also.

My final hours were spend with a bubble head caddis. I got some very explosive takes which is a joy to watch.I had some lovely trout with a couple touching the 30cm mark , few larger fish beginning to show.

Overall a great weekend and hoping for plenty more trout during the week.

Salmon, sea trout and browns caught on Carrowmore!

Carrowmore salmon ready for release

There was little or no angling on Carrowmore Lake for nearly two weeks due to weather conditions in late May. However, fishing has improved for the past 10 days with plenty good salmon caught by local and visiting anglers alike.

Another one in the net

There were also some decent brownies caught as the lake gets a fair hatch of lake olives during this time of the year.

Chunky Carrowmore brownie

Sea trout have started to run the lake in better numbers and this raises hopes for exciting lough style fishing in the coming weeks.

Good fishing for Matt and his two sons in Boyle

Bodo Funke of Angling Services Ireland reports from the Boyle area…

It was great to have Matt and his two sons out again on a recent fishing tour after having them out three years ago.

This time it was time for dad to get the biggest fish of the day a nice 103cm pike.
Only for some extremely hard fighting fish that managed to get away on the boys, they would have both caught bigger…, but everyone got action and landed some.

Great species fishing in Clare

More great fishing to report from west Clare this week, with fishing really picking up as the water temperature increases. Skipper Sean Maguire has been out every day since the weekend with various groups and reports great fishing for mixed species, particularly pollack, with some lovely fish coming aboard.

Luke Aston, skipper of the Clare Dragoon, also reports very good fishing. Over the weekend he ventured west of Loop Head with a couple of groups and reported good catches of mackerel to start, with a nice mix of fish on the reefs – plenty of pollack to 8lbs, lots of handy coalfish of 3 to 4 lbs and even some codling, haddock and whiting. There was also a good sign of ling. Back up the estuary they went to try for a tope with no luck, but bull huss and spurdog were available instead.

Anglers Club Portumna back on the lakeshore

The Anglers Club of Portumna had their first knock-up of the year at Doon Lake near Broadford last Sunday and it looks like they enjoyed some spectacular scenery to go along with their fishing.

Great to see coarse angling clubs able to get back to a bit of competitive fishing again last week after the long lockdown period.

Big Pike & Trout for fishingireland.pl clients

Jacek Gorny from fishingireland.pl has some happy clients right now judging by the quality of the fish he has been getting recently. Targeting large pike has paid off in the past week with one pike session producing 17 fish including a few 100cm+ fish.

The trout were pretty active too with some very beautifully conditioned fish coming to the boat.

Heaps of Smoothies for Wicklow Bay SAC

The members of Wicklow Bay SAC managed to get out for a bit of competitive fishing in the past week and luckily for them the fish were biting hard. They managed to boat over 180 Smoothies (including a few triple hook-ups), with a few Ray, Tope and Gurnards also making it into the mix. Looks like the sea fishing on the east coast is really hotting up right now…
