Look and Learn: Tying pike flies with synthetics – Norbert Renaud

pike fly

Norbert Renaud from L’Ile Verte Lodge in Cavan is a pike guide who specialises in bringing French anglers to Ireland. Based in Killeshandra, Norbert is in one of the heartlands of pike angling in Ireland. Norbert live streams a fly tying session every Friday night at 7pm Irish time on his Youtube Channel. In this episode of  “The Live Sessions” Norbert uses Kanekalon hair and Congo fibers to tie some fabulous looking flies that are as durable as they are effective…

Norbert’s Notes: I am not a commercial tier and I tie mostly for clients while guiding or at the lodge. We call these flies “guide flies”. They need to be easy to tie, good value, long lasting, easy to cast and more importantly they have to catch fish! This is the reason why I use mostly two synthetics for these flies: Kanekalon hair and Congo fibers.

Salmon Anglers – Lower River Lee, No. 5 or Cork District Brown Tags Required

Salmon Anglers – Lower River Lee, No. 5 or Cork District

Brown Tags Required

Salmon anglers are advised that from 1st February 2021 to midnight of 30th September 2021, Brown Tag regulations will be in force on the Lower River Lee.

179 Brown Tags are available for the season. Due to Level 5 Covid-19 Guidelines, normal distribution through T.W Murray, Halfway Angling Centre and The Tackle Shop, Shandon Street is unavailable at present. Inland Fisheries Ireland hereby gives notice that while non-essential retail outlets are closed, distribution of brown tags will be by lottery.

The Wild Salmon and Seatrout Tagging Scheme Regulations permit a maximum of 25% of the available tags to be issued at one time. IFI will therefore select 45 anglers to receive a brown tag on 31st January 2021.

Any angler requesting a brown tag must be in possession of a valid 2021 Salmon Licence and must apply by email only to:  corkleebrowntag2021@fisheriesireland.ie by midnight on Friday, 29th January 2021. Anglers must provide their Name, Contact Address, Telephone Number and 2021 Salmon Licence number. This is the only method to apply for a brown tag.  Anglers may only fish one brown tag over the full season. Multiple applications will disqualify. Salmon Licences are available online at: https://store.fishinginireland.info

Further lotteries may be required if distributors are unable to open by the 29th March 2021.

Salmon anglers not in possession of a Brown Tag must fish using Catch and Release methods i.e., single or double barbless hooks. Use of worms is not permitted. A Salmon cannot be taken unless the angler is in possession of a Brown Tag. If a Salmon is taken both a Blue and Brown Tag must be affixed to the fish. Failure to do so may result in penalties.

IFI will send all applicants an entry number for the lottery by email before the draw which will take place at 13:00 on Sunday 31st January 2021. No personal information will be shared.  10 reserve licence numbers will be drawn in case the initial offer of a brown tag is not taken up. Tags will be issued to successful applicants by post.

Application may be made between Friday 22nd January 2021 and Friday 29th January to: corkleebrowntag2021@fisheriesireland.ie.  Late or early applications will be excluded.

Longford pike in local river a respite from lockdown

pike

Daniel Daly reports on the pike fishing in Longford this winter where they’ve had some good catches despite being confined by the 5km lockdown…

pike

Myself and my brother Simon, have been getting some good pike fishing on the local river in Longford. We’ve been keeping to our 5k limits as we both live next to a good stretch off the Camlin and have lots off places on the river to fish.

pike

We have been catching loads off pike ranging from small to double figures especially in the colder days. All the pike caught were safely released.

Irish Angling Update 15 January 2021

Lough Sheelin
Ice breaks up on Lough Sheelin as temperatures rise

The hard, clear, cold weather has given away to milder damp conditions. Ice that had taken hold of many lakes and ponds melted away as temperatures jumped. Though having said that the damp weather made what cold there was creep closer to the bones, or so it felt. Unfortunately the lockdown that has gripped the country has not yet loosened its hold, so anglers have not been as busy as they’d like to be…

It hardly needs repeating, but the 5km lockdown has really had an impact on angling already this year. The salmon fisheries that opened on January 1st reported opening day to be the quietest ever. Angling effort is very light and there is still no sign of the first springer of the year.

Pike anglers too should be busy at this time of the year. We don’t have any reports from that quarter so for now it’s off to Youtube where Marcin Kantor posted a great video of his fly fishing adventures from December last year. We also have a brief report on pike fishing on the Royal canal from last December.

Fly fishing for pike before the lockdown

For the trout angler we have some fly tying updates from Peter Driver and George McGrath. There is a lovely mix of nymphs, spider and lough style flies on offer and the videos are well worth a watch. Don’t forget that Peter will be tying live on Saturday evening and you can watch the stream on his Facebook page.

Charter skipper Kit Dunne sent in a review of 2020. Bad and all as it was, his boats had some great fishing as they explored new wrecks from his Wicklow base. We also feature a video from Chris O’Sullivan where he shows us how to bait up with gaper clams and the guys at Irish Angling Adventures show how you can find new fishing spots without ever leaving your home. A handy skill in the current circumstances. Finally, we have a quick update for December from the east coast.

And now the weather…

Saturday will be a fresh day with sunny spells and scattered showers – mainly across Ulster and western counties. Highest temperatures will range 6°C to 9°C, in moderate to fresh west to northwest breezes. Some more showers on Sunday and after a mixed weekend it will become more unsettled again from Monday, with milder wet conditions for a time before temperatures decrease again later on Tuesday and remaining cold through to next weekend.

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland.

    December success for pike anglers!

    Pike fishing in Ireland

Weather conditions were mixed during the month of December. However, anglers that did venture out had some success.

Good sized pike, some into double figures were caught and released on the Royal Canal in the Maynooth area. Fish fell to dead-bait and lures. Angling effort has again reduced since the reintroduction of level 5 restrictions in order to combat Covid-19.

    Level 5

While we are all confined to base, and only those lucky enough to have fishing within 5km can get out, the rest of us can dream of summer days watching the rod tips for bites, and starting to plan a few sessions for the year. Whether you fish the same marks all the time, or strap a bag on your back and hit the coast looking for new spots, a bit of research never goes amiss.

James from Irish Angling Adventures is back with a new video drop, and this time there is no fishing, scenery or action.
