Good midlands river fishing for Newbridge pike anglers

Brendan Jarvis reports on the Newbridge and District Pike Anglers 24 hour competition fished at the weekend…

pike

We held our 24 hour competition last Saturday/Sunday on a midland river. Access was kind of difficult with tall bull rushes growing all along the river. Still, we had 20 members fish and they caught 85 pike including 4 doubles to 14lb 8oz caught and released.  right so full results are as follows :

Winner of Gingerstown Cup 2019

  • 1st Steo Brien 14lb 08oz hf 25lb 0oz bag 3 fish
  • 2nd Ray Collopy 49lb 12oz bag 15 fish
  • 3rd Brendan Jervis 37lb 11oz bag 7 fish

Well done to all the winners on the day

I would like to thank all the members who made the trip this was a special competition as this one was owned by our former member who passed away tragically last month as a mark of respect we all had a drink in his memory at 10pm Saturday night.

Upcoming events

Our next cup is the mighty Dubs cup. Most lads will be staying over that night so if you haven’t booked your room let me know asap.

Knockaderry and Carrigavantry Fishing Well for Evening Rise

David Tantrum reports from Knockaderry and Carrigavantry reservoirs:

This brown trout was the last fish boated by Pierre Andre before returning home to Twickenham. He fished for three days sampling both Knockaderry and Carrigavantry. He has fished all over the world and rates these fisheries as the best value for money and visits us four times a year.

Pierre Andre and the last fish of his visit

Jerry Taggart and party from Belfast fished for three days on June the 28th, staying in Kilmeaden as arranged by Michael Sheehan (our events secretary – contact number 0861073086).  They said the apres-fishing was as good as the fishing! They intend to come back again too.

The water clarity in both lakes is good.  On suitable nights the evening rise is frenetic, but getting the right tactic is frustrating.  Where did all the fish come from!! As fish rise all round you, in Knockaderry it’s sedges, but at Carrigavantry it could be sedges, caenis or buzzers, or all three as the light fades.

Great fun!

First Irish Pike Trip for Dutch Angler at Melview………

………and size did not matter!

Laurence Ham from the Netherlands was over in Ireland for the very first time for a spot of pike fishing and decided to stay with host and guide Kevin of Melview Fishing Lodge, the first part of the week was a little slow for Laurence but picked up towards the end of the week.

Kevin said, ‘I had the pleasure of fishing with Laurence on two of his days and it was great to see his passion for fishing and the enjoyment he gets from it’.

Laurence is all smiles with his first ever Irish Pike

‘His first pike in Ireland was not a monster but the joy on his face was a picture and one that neither I nor he will forget, and we won’t talk about the five bigger ones we lost’.

Great time had by all and we hope to see him back in Ireland next year.

ALL FISH RETURNED UNHARMED.

Eddie Butler reports on super small boat fishing trip from Waterford…

Spurdog
Barry had twp specimen spurdogs

SHOCK-WAVES headed to Waterford for a short trip today with Barry Murphy, Conor Purcell and myself. A Red letter day was the only way to describe the day. Fishing was frantic and non stop with over 60 Spurdogs to the boat.

Spurdog
Conor had one

Barry had two specimens, Conor had one and I got my elusive first specimen spur. Delighted! And we only fished for four hours. A great, fantastic day out and one to remember……

Predator Competition sees big fish on Mask in difficult conditions

Connacht Predator angling club PRO Aidan Traynor was in touch with a report from their club competition held on Mask on Sunday last.

On Sunday we held our ” Predator Specialists” boat competition on Lough Mask. Conditions were tough with the water like a sheet of glass and the only thing biting for a lot of anglers were the midges. Despite this all anglers persevered and throughout the day teams landed some incredible fish.

Some lovely summer fishing on Lene

Mick Flanagan reports from Lough Lene…

dad with boys
The O’Meara lads

I got another few cracking photographs this week from Lough Lene in North Westmeath where some of our younger anglers were enjoying the wonderful sport of angling. The O’Mara brothers from Gaulmoylestown were out with dad John and really enjoyed the few hours fishing.

Plus the Byrne brothers Des and Hugh of Mullingar were down with nephew Hugh Clark of Killiney. The lads are sons of the late Danny Byrne of the Pub, and Hugh Daniels menswear Shop. Naturally that leaves young Danny Clark a Grandson of the late Danny. Des lives in Mullingar, with Hugh in Dublin, and older brother Danny is up in Belfast, but they always make time to get back to their roots. If this fine weather keeps up the Byrne Brothers will be back out on the Lakes quite soon.

Caenis the only sport on Corrib as summer lull arrives

Declan Gibbons reports that Corrib has been quiet of late, with just some Caenis fishing activity to report. Traditionally early July is quiet on the lake, with many trout zoned in on coarse fish fry and reluctant to take a fly. Watch this space, however, as the second mayfly hatch will get under way in the next couple of weeks, and often produces better fishing than May for those in the know.

Larry McCarthy of Corrib View Lodge www.corribangling.com reports  a slower week of angling activity over the last two weeks. The Caenis fishing is slowly coming to an end, but some good mornings were had. English visitors Bill Latham and Jon Perry enjoyed a great morning boated by Larry with 8 good trout to over 4lbs in weight.

Welsh angler Gareth Jones  had two early mornings for 15 trout . Over the last few days fly hatches are still very good but the rising water temperatures have slowed the amount of rising fish.

Lough Owel dead low, some trout caught on fry patterns

Mick Flanagan reports from Lough Owel…

Once again as in 2018 Lough Owel water levels are on the decline. Last season it had a big knock on effect on the Royal Canal and the supply coming from Owel, as it was all most dry on some stretches. What the long term effect these low water levels will have on Owel is not known, but last season many of the aquatic life on Owel along the shore line was lost. I was on Owel last week, and in Baxter’s Garden, as it is known to Owel Anglers the old boat is starting to reappear. We photographed this last season in dry dock.

Sunset on Owel

As far as the trout fishing is concerned the fish are keeping tight lipped, but still a few nice fish are being caught on fry imitations such as Minkies which are tied to look like small fry such as Sticklebacks and Perch fry.

At Tullaghan and Mullallys you best check your boats if heading out for the evening fishing, as many are now almost on dry land.
