Salmon fishing steady at Delphi

David McEvoy reports from Delphi Lodge….

Fishing here at Delphi has been steady since my last update, with fourteen fish landed, mainly grilse, with a few springers thrown in for good measure. Conditions have been excellent with the river varying in height from 60 to 44 this morning.

salmon
Landing a wild salmon at Delphi. Just enough time for a quick photo before the recovery and release.

Warren Osako continued his good run of form with two fish on the 5th, the first a sparkling grilse of approx. 3lbs from the Rock Pool on a Collie Dog and the second of approx. 4lbs, from the Stream on Finlough, also on a Collie Dog. Kurt Roth also had one from the Stream on Finlough of 4lbs on a Willie Gunn. Warren had another from the Stream on Finlough on the 6thof 2lbs4ozs, again on a Collie Dog. In the afternoon his wife Susan had a beautiful grilse of 5lbs6ozs from the Deadman’s on a Cascade and her fishing partner Nancy Richerson, landed her first ever salmon, a fish of 2lbs10ozs, from the Quarry, also on a Cascade. Kurt Roth finished off the day with one of 6lbs7ozs from the Stream on Finlough on a Willie Gunn.

On the 7thShauna Waterer stole the limelight with a sea liced fish of 9lbs14ozs from the Quarry Pool on a Park Shrimp. In the afternoon Kurt Roth, again to the fore, landed two in 30 minutes from the Kings Pool of 3lbs15ozs and 4lbs3ozs on guess what, a Willie Gunn. There was only one landed yesterday. Michael Osgerby landed his first ever salmon, weighing in at 3lbs13.5ozs on a Posh Tosh from the Meadow Pool.

This morning Peter Eaton had a tremendous start to his week, when he landed a sea liced fish of 7lbs5ozs from the Rock Pool on a Red Francis. Wayne Byrne had a fish from Boat point on Finlough of 6lbs1oz on a Cascade. Bas Maiburg from the Netherlands on his first day’s salmon fishing managed to land his first ever. The fish was caught in the Stream on Finlough, weighed in at 4lbs9.5ozs and took a Collie Dog. Bas is still in shock and I hope he doesn’t think that salmon fishing is that easy!

Water levels are excellent at the moment and even though there is no significant rainfall till Thursday, conditions should be ideal as the system is well topped up. There are some rods available this week and next, and then we are pretty full for the following four weeks. In other words, if you want to try your luck at Delphi give us a shout in the next few days.

Paul Boothby and Tony Hopkins clear winners of the Inniscarra Feeder Pairs Festival.

Inniscarra TDL reports on the Inniscarra Feeder Pairs Festival…
Inniscarra

07 June: Congratulations to winning duo Paul Boothby and Tony Hopkins clear winners of the Inniscarra Feeder Pairs Festival.

This inaugural event saw, for the first time in Ireland, fishing ‘continental style’ with anglers sharing a peg. It was a well played out competition which saw competitors from the UK, Ireland and the Netherlands fish together five sections on Inniscarra by rotation.

winners

Going into the final day of the Festival all eyes were on the top five. It was a race among the top pairs as four out of the five headed to the Garden Centre where we had seen some good bream catches throughout the week. It was always going to be difficult to beat Tony & Paul who had 104kg between them already.

Lovely seatrout action on Currane with fish to 10lb caught and released

Vincent Appleby reports from Lough Currane…

5/6/19 Today was a special day and a historic day in Ireland and I can assure its not false news and yes the President of the Untied States of America arrived in Ireland, what has that got to do with Lough Currane, well I will let Currane angler have his say on today’s action and I quote, “I’m Craig Crossley from Orlando, Florida and I came over to Ireland to escape President Trump and he followed me over to the Emerald Isle and as luck would have it I went out fishing with my guide and caught a great 4 lbs. Salmon on the troll which totally made my day and tonight I and Family had a great Salmon feast and I have to say my Guide worked hard to get that Salmon and after that great feed I and my Family of six hill walkers will be ready for making our way back to Killarney tomorrow and again thanks to the Waterville Fishery for supporting my Family at the Dinner table this evening.”

Staying in the Salmon department, Currane Angler Mr. Patrick’s Labere of France caught a fine 5 ½ lbs. Salmon on the troll with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com Wind NNE light showers this morning and bright and sunny this afternoon. Yesterday’s weather amount of rainfall 1,8 mm. Maximum air temperature 13.4 c.

6/6/19 Straight to the C&R ST Index. Currane angler, Mr. Yanick Labere of France C&R a fine 3 lbs. Sea Trout on the troll, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com Wind NNW light to fresh and sunny with some cloud cover. Yesterday’s weather, maximum air temperature 13.6 c.

7/6/19  The Currane Anglers were all quiet on all fronts this cold day as the wind and showers came from the North. Yesterday’s weather, maximum air temperature 13.3 c.

8/6/19 We Currane Anglers like tight lines but sadly the Currane anglers lines were slack this day in most departments. Currane fly angler Mr. William Hamilton, while fly-fishing on the drift, caught two fine Sea Trout in the 3 lbs class on Saturday.  Wind North with reasonable cloud cover at times. Yesterday’s Weather, maximum air temperature 14.1 c.

9/6/19 Lough Currane was all quiet in every department but one. Wind SW light and bright and sunny.  William Hamilton caught 3 Sea Trout again all in the 3lbs Class all while fishing in his hired out boat from www.lakelandshouse.com Yesterday’s weather, maximum air temperature 14. 3 c.

10/6/19 There was a fine 3 lbs. Sea Trout caught on the fly by Currane fly angler Mr. Tom Duggan of Kilkenny. For the rest of the Currane anglers all quiet on the SW front. Wind NW light and bright and sunny. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 4.3 mm. Maximum air temperature 14. 3 c.

11/6/19 Straight to the C&R Sea Trout headlines North and South Shores, but the breaking news comes from the North Shore and the bungalow and when I say Sea Trout I mean Sea Trout, I can tell you it’s the talk of the Lough Currane anglers and the talk of the Waterville Village and for good reason because Currane fly angler Mr Romain Zambon from Luxembourg and fishing out of www.lakelandshouse.com and while fly fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught a cracker of a C&R Trophy 10 lbs. Specimen Sea Trout, So congratulations Romain and his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea and not forgetting Bob the photographer also a Currane fly angler, also from Luxembourg. Now we head across Lough Currane and to the hired out boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com Currane fly angler. Mr. William Hamilton was in great form again today, while on the drift C&R, 3 fine Sea Trout in the 2 to 3 lbs. class and rose a good few more and hooked and lost a Grilse and it lived to tell the tale. Wind NE light with reasonable cloud cover. Yesterdays weather, maximum air temperature 15.2.c

That is your ration  from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery, no spin no fly’s just facts.

Mayfly tapers off on Corrib as Caenis hatches produce more fish

Declan Gibbons reports that angling pressure has lessened a bit due to the weather conditions and a tapering off in mayfly hatches. Caenis fishing produced the best of what was caught during the week gone by.

Larry McCarthy of Corrib View Lodge http://www.corribangling.com reports a mixed week of angling on Lough Corrib with air and water temperatures still low for June and as a result Caenis hatches are very localised. Malcolm Patrick from England enjoyed some good Caenis fishing on Monday with 8 fish in the Annaghkeen area with fish between 1.5lbs and 2.5lbs. Patrick Dooley organised a party of 5 visiting UK anglers for 4 days and had mixed results – Inchagoill produced some good dry fly action with plenty of small trout boated. Joe Trill while guiding one of the group had the best fish of the week himself with a fish over 5lbs on a wet mayfly. Shane Cramer had a good morning Caenis fishing guided by Larry on Sunday, boating 6 good trout to almost 3lbs (all returned).

Phillip Comber reports from Rabbit Island Lodge http://www.connemaragetaways.com that John Conway Rowney and friends had a quick visit to Rabbit Island for 2 days late mayfly fishing and on Saturday 8th of June had great fishing, with Nick Roberts a first timer to Corrib getting 4 fish on mayfly for 9lbs, and Alexandra Taylor also a first time visitor to Corrib getting 1 fish for 2lbs. Regular visitor Kate Meuli had 3 fish for 4lbs and unfortunately Sundays fishing was hampered with very bright sunny conditions.

On Sunday the 16th of June the Corrib Federation will host the Federation Cup out of Greenfields; entry fee is €25 with all funds raised going into stream enhancement around Lough Corrib Thursday 13th is the closing date for entries – for further details Contact Phillip Comber on 086-2786301.

In the Oughterard area Basil Shields of Ardnasillagh Lodge (tel. 091-552550) reports a slightly quieter week at the lodge, but those who had action are as follows: Steve Sutton and Declan of Dargle Anglers, Dublin on Saturday had 4 fish for their day. Julie Cook from New Zealand had 4 fish for 2 days and a group of 3 anglers from Soldarini Tackle in Italy had 7 fish for their day on Corrib. Staying in the Oughterard area Kevin Molloy of Baurisheen Bay Boat Hire, Guiding & Self Catering (tel. 087-9604170) reports angler Nick Woodland from New Zealand had 5 trout on Tuesday with the best fish being 2lbs. Ian & Friends from Northern Ireland had 10 fish for 4 days trolling with the best two being 13.5lbs and 11lbs, and the smallest being 5lbs. Phillip Black on Sunday had 5 fish on dries with the best being 2.25lbs.

Rain brings fish in at Ballynahinch

Fishery manager Greg Reidy was in touch to update us on fishing at Ballynahinch Castle.

With low water conditions for the best part of April and very low water for all of May, we saw saw no salmon or sea trout but it did open a window to some wonderful dry fly fishing for the resident brown trout with some fish over the 30cm mark. The last few days of May brought very heavy rain and of course, the fish. The run of spring fish that could not enter the system quickly moved up river and one hotel guest was lucky enough to land our first salmon, a cracking 9lbs fish. On the 5th of June one of our ghillies hooked into a nice 7lbs salmon. With the water still high and bright day the Kinnermoney Killer did the job with a sinking tip.

The sea trout are now coming into the system, the earlier run (which we now have) tend to be larger fish and sea trout up to 3lbs and 4lbs have been spotted around the river.

The current water level is perfect but dropping steadily. As it stands, there is rain forecasted for the weekend so water levels should remain at the desirable level.

Update: Greg was in touch again this afternoon with a photo of one of the hotel guests releasing a nice 6lbs grilse, caught on Beat 1 using a size 8 Silver Stoat tied by Barry Farrell on a single hook. Things are looking up for good sport at Ballynahinch over the coming weeks!

Welcome rain brought a welcome return of fish on the Erriff last week

Osgur Grieve reported that the fishery saw a big improvement since the end of May, as a welcome burst of wet weather brought the river to life.

Things have really improved over the last 6 days with the return of regular rainfall and salmon entering the system. We have had 8 salmon and 2 sea-trout for the period May 30th – June 4th. The salmon have been a mixture of spring salmon and grilse. Thursday 30th saw the return of regular angler Peter Hunt who landed a 4.5lbs ranched grilse in the Middle Garden Pool using a Cascade conehead. Visiting angler Ansgifr Von Der Haar fished with us on Friday 31st and had a great morning releasing a fine 9lbs springer from the Upper Square Pool on Beat 9 using a Cascade tube fly, and later that day he hooked and lost another in the Coronation Pool on Beat 8. That evening with very high water reading 1.96m on the gauge Gary McFarlane fished Beat 8 and released 2 nice sea trout of 1lbs and 1.5lbs using a Yellow Flamethrower. Regular angler Kevin Attride also fished the Coronation Pool on Beat 8 that evening and released a fine spring salmon estimated at 10.5lbs using a Park Shrimp conehead.

On Saturday 1st June Peter Hunt returned, this time with his son David and fished Beat 9 in the morning – David was rewarded with a fine brace of salmon weighing 8lbs and 4.5lbs on a Silver grey, both fish came from the Middle Garden Pool.

Father and son duo Gerard Coey senior and junior fished on the 4th and Gerard Coey junior landed a ranched grilse of 3.47lbs from the Falls Pool on a Green Butt Cascade which was his 1st salmon ever so well done Gerard!

Another regular angler Jurgen Mantle had a good afternoon on Tuesday 4th releasing 2 wild grilse of 4lbs and 4.5lbs from the Sea Pool and Upper Garden Pool using an Ally’s Shrimp.

With the broken weather and spring tides at the moment the prospects look good for the next week, the grilse are starting to appear in small numbers and there are still a few springers about. Well done to all our anglers and we look forward to seeing you all back soon.

We are experiencing technical difficulties with our fishery office landline at the moment so bookings can be made by ringing 087 9104328.

Nymphs and wets working well for Nore trout

Dan O’Neill reports from Mount Juliet on the River Nore…

trout

Just before the river gained its well needed rain there was some great nymphing and wet fly fishing on the stretch. The trout seem to be in abundance all along the fishery which is a great sign, they are all as well conditioned as each other also,

Most natural pattern nymphs entice trout to take, some non natural nymphs also claiming what tended to be the smaller of the trout.

landing a trout

A few anglers on the fishery pre-flood met some beautiful trout some just over 2 pound and quite a few between 1 pound and 1.5 which gave a great account of themselves in the fast current.

another trout

Managing to get down myself for a while on Sunday with fellow angler Patrick we spent 20-30 mins on several different runs, great sport was had and plenty of memorable acrobatics from the beautiful brown trout,

If anyone is interested there is a possibility depending on numbers that a nymphing masterclass will be held on the stretch, anyone who is interested please contact me on 0857652751 or [email protected]

A sad loss to the angling community

Robert Buick
Robert Buick

Robert Buick founded the East Belfast Angling Club in 1972 and has played an active role in club administration and on the bank ever since. Recognising the benefits of all Ireland representation in coarse fishing, Robert and the EBCAC played a major part in the enhancement of the National Coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland ,NCFFI to the 32-county federation as we know it today. Bound by the rules of the NCFFI the newly formed Ulster Provincial Council was chaired by Robert for over 30 years and he did a wonderful job in keeping it afloat through some of our most troubled times.  A passionate volunteer Robert has dedicated many of his years to our sport serving as both an officer and committee member of the NCFFI.

Robert was an active member on the international scene fishing his first World Championships in 1984 on the River Thielle, Yverdon in Switzerland. It was here that Bobby Smithers became World Champion and these were exciting and proud times for all the team members.  Robert continued to fish for Ireland at a number of events where he built a huge amount of international experience and was part of a great team who delivered Ireland’s first World Championship event on the Newry Canal in 1982.  He has shared this knowledge from the grass roots of coarse angling sport, mentoring and coaching those on their pathway to the world stage with enthusiasm and pride ever since.

team ireland
Robert, 2nd from left, on the 1986 Irish team

His love of the canals saw him regularly travel to Enfield, Edenderry and Prosperous to compete and frame in open competition and festivals.  He was also a stalwart of the Fermanagh Classic having fished them all, reluctantly only withdrawing from this years’ event on day one. Robert also championed the development of Mid Ulster’s coarse angling facility on the Lower River Bann at Portglenone and supported the Schools Competition on the venue, but sadly will not be with us to celebrate its growth to a world class angling facility when the NCFFI hosts the 25th FIPSed European Championships at the end of the month.

NCFFI Hon. President Oliver McGauley says:- ‘Robert has been key to the federation dedicating his life to our sport. He served as our chair for a number of years and did a wonderful job in keeping the UCFF afloat and to the fore during the most difficult times. It was a privilege to work with Robert on many angling projects, as a member of the international coarse fishing team and most of all as a friend.  This is a sad loss to the angling world but we hope that his legacy will live on.’

A recognisable character on the bank with his cap and pipe, Robert Buick was the gentleman of angling and always available to offer help and advice. A huge advocate for coarse angling in Ireland and he will be sadly missed by all.
