Dutch anglers have great week’s fishing.

Kevin Lyons reports from Melview Lodge…

Ronald and Bert are all smile with this cracking catch of bream

Ronald and friend Bert from Holland were once again over for their annual fishing trip to Melview Fishing Lodge in Longford. After arriving it was straight out to do some fishing. After the fishing session it was time for some good old fashion prebaiting, and it was worth all their efforts. The next day see some cracking catches of bream so it was decided to prebait again, and the venue produced great catches for the next few days using the same approach.

Bert with a nice catch on day three

Kevin decided it was time to rest the venue and move on, Ronald and Bert wanted to try for some tench on the last day so a different venue was prebaited with partials for them. Due to the hot bright weather on the day things didn’t go to plan, however the guys had a great week’s fishing and we hope to see them back in Ireland next year.

ALL FISH RETURNED UNHARMED.

Elvin with a nice catch of bream

Elvin Garnett from Yorkshire decided this year he would stay with Kevin at Melview Fishing Lodge in Longford for his annual fishing trip to Ireland, what a great week it turned out to be for him. Elvin had some great catches of bream, and for the last three days of his stay he had some great catches of Tench.

A nice catch of tench for Elvin

Elvin said it was one of the best bream sessions he had in a good few years and to round it off with a few days of good tench fishing was the icing on the cake. Kevin said, it was a great week for Elvin who put in the time and effort and reaped the rewards. Well done Elvin, hope to see you next year.

Some action reported from Lough Sheelin

Peter Cunningham from Boyne Valley Fishing Guides has been in contact to let us know that they have been on Lough Sheelin a few times over the last couple of weeks. They report that fishing has generally been tough over the last while but they are getting a few fish all the same.

In addition to some fish around 1.5lbs to 2lbs they have some nice well conditioned fish including a few beautiful trout which were estimated to weigh between 3lbs and 5lbs. All of fish were carefully released unharmed back to the lake.

The hatch of mayfly has been sporadic to say the least and it is reported there has been no massive hatch like last year. Odd drifts of spents are going out but not every evening and the chill in the wind has not helped matters.

Trout and About with Jimmy Tyrrell on the River Nore and its Tributaries

This week we were in touch with well-known fishing guide and fly tier Jimmy Tyrrell from Irish Fly Craft who had his first outing on the River Nore and its tributaries last night. Water levels continue to drop and clear but according to Jimmy they are still slightly above normal for the time of year. Temperatures were good but a cool breeze deterred much in the way surface activity and Jimmy decided to fish nymphs to see if he could contact his first wild brown trout of the season on the Durrow and Cullohill Parish Anglers Association waters.

In a short session, Jimmy had some nice fish, all of which were returned quickly to the rivers. The use of single barbless hooks makes this very easy. An occasional olive and a few mayfly fluttered about in the evening sky and some sedges scurried about but there was not enough fly hatching to encourage a consistent evening rise. Only an occasional trout poked its head above the surface. As the weather, fly hatches and conditions improve the fishing is sure to get much better in the coming weeks.

Go Fishing

If you are interested in a days’ guided fly fishing on the River Nore with Jimmy Tyrell you can get in contact with him through his contact details below. Jimmy guides on many stretches of the River Nore and its tributaries. In addition to guiding services Jimmy also can provide fishing tuition and is internationally well known as a fly tier. He can produce and supply all standard fly patterns for salmon and brown trout (river and lake) and can assist anglers in developing bespoke flies to meet their requirements.

Good salmon fishing on Carrowmore continues despite low water elvels

The bright conditions and very low water levels didn’t make for easy fishing on Carrowmore Lake. However, anglers caught a total of 14 fish for the week. Among the successful anglers were Glen Woods, Martin McDonnell and nine year old Leo Reuland from Belmullet who caught his first ever salmon. Ewan McGregor, Scotland, had a total of three all of which were released, while local angler, John Cosgrove, had the best of the week with 11.5lbs. Most successful flies included Green Peter, Dabbler and Zulu patterns.

Killala Bay fishing well

Donal Kennedy reports

On Sunday 12th May a party of anglers set out from Killala Harbour for a day’s fishing on board the charter boat Leah. Weather was fine and sea was calm . . . a near perfect day. A few miles out, the skipper drifted over some rocky ground and soon the anglers were catching a variety of different species including coalfish, cod, pollack, ling, pouting and cuckoo wrasse. Mackerel were also caught in good numbers. All returned safely to harbour well pleased with their days fishing.

On Thursday 16th May a French fishing party set out from Killala Harbour to fish Killala Bay. The group was on holidays staying in the Foxford area enjoying fishing the nearby lakes and rivers. So they decided to go for a change and fish Killala Bay for a day. Weather was very good with calm seas. The group had an enjoyable day’s fishing with some cracking pollack along with coalfish and a few mackerel. All returned to harbour well pleased with the day.
